Just looking at the combat video and my eyes are drawn to the top left hand corner of the screen:

http://www.incgamers...t-systems-video

Just an aesthetic thing, but it now seems like your companions all have very cartoony profile pics of themselves. Sera looking very cheeky, Vivian stuck up etc. If you are trying to make characters more 3 dimensional and move beyond simply being their tropes surely this is the wrong way to go about it. Also for a game which has moved towards more graphic realism particularly for non-humans compared to DA2 why would you use comic book style profile pics? Also in DA:O my character's profile pic was my character, I could choose the colour background, angle of pic etc. To now have a logo based on class seems like a step backwards. I saw that in earlier videos but I just presumed that it was a filler.

I'm OK with the companions having cartoon-esque portraits. But I really love customizing my own. It'll be really dull if we have to choose between pictures of hands and inquisition logos.

I agree. I think the previous ones were more aesthetically pleasing but the new ones aren't that horrible either.

Also I'm fairly certain we'll be able to customize our own portraits. Perhaps they wish to to keep the character creator options (including portrait) under wraps for now?

Just to note that these aren't finalized. Bioware can still rework them several times over until they're satisfied. Or not, whatever.

I'll wait to see more character icons to pass judgment. Blackwall's in particular would be the most interesting.

And we don't know yet whether these are even the final profile pics...

Though I have to admit - I love Sera's.

I actually like it.

I didn't like the character portraits in E3 (they were symbols) and was surprise to see the news ones today.

Maybe you get to chose the style you want them in? Like, you can choose the sword pic for the Inquisitor, so all the portraits show in that minimalist style. If you chose the hand, the portraits are this more cartoony version. I liked the old ones, so I hope they aren't gone all together.

I'm cool with the cartoon style portraits but I want one too for my Inquisitor's face!

As I mentioned in the thread for the combat video, I'm a big fan of the new portraits.

I'm tired of things needing to be dark and gritty to be considered "mature". Being colorful and "cartoony" doesn't automatically make something childish. Especially considering the content matter of Dragon Age, it's clear that the story is adult in nature, and not suitable for children. It's very possible to tell mature stories with more stylized art, and I find these vibrant portraits much more interesting than the old ones. Plus, these portraits show off some of the characters' personalities, instead of the "drivers license" pictures from Origins and 2.

I wouldn't be too broken up if the portraits change again, but I definitely find these refreshing.

I found the new portraits to be really cool personally. I like them better than the previous ones.

I fully agree. As meantiond in the combat video thread, I made the same point. Way too cartoony and contradicting. Sera just made me cringe. I too hope it is just filler for the inquisitor potrait because there is no excuse for that . DAO had you take a self potrait, give background, angle, even making serious or funny faces.

I prefer the new ones, but keep in mind it's all subject to change. Especially the player pic - we might still have an option of using the inquisitor's face.

You can see Cole, Blackwall, and Dorian between seconds 0:08 and 0:11, and then it switches to Sera, Vivienne, and Iron Bull.

I doubt it. In the original it was easy, because all they needed to do was create a screen shot of your PC and put it in a box. If you were to create an animation style consistent with your companions, they would need for every player appearance decision to have a corresponding cartoon choice.

I'm not bothered by the new icons, I can tell them apart, which is most important.

As for the Inquisitor I don't need to see their face, since protagonists are always at the top of the list.

I'm not a huge fan. I like Blackwall's, Cole's, and the Iron Bull's as they are ambiguous as to the emotions they display. Sera's and Vivienne's are too reductive (making Sera have an over the top, scary grin, and making Vivienne seem like an arrogant teenager). I prefer subtlety. Dorian's is bizarre looking, he looks like Jaffar mixed with Dr. Neo Cortex.

I'd rather the more neutral screen caps of the previous games, or the ambiguous/stylized black and white ones, as characters develop over time and the cartoony new ones seem like stereotypes of a character, which does not a good portrait make. I feel like the new portraits are a bit heavy handed.

I remember when BG2 had it's first preview showing character icons, and people got annoyed at how cartoony they were (Minsc's in particular was awful).  But it turned out that they were just quick placeholders while the final ones were being developed, so I reckon it's no more than that.

I'd be fine with cartoony portraits if it didn't mean my inquisitor didn't get a real portrait :( I don't want to be a hand or a sword or some other icon.

So you can. Blackwall looks serious and grumpy. Awesome.

Dorian also looks like a classic mustache dialing villain. Also awesome.

Cole is meh.

I say we use the characters: " ١ ", and " ٢ ", and " ٣ ", and  " ٤ " to represent our Characters.

That way, they are totally unambiguous and totally devoid of personality!

[Curse you, IP Boards!  How dare you presume to insist on re-presenting what I typed in what you think is the orthographically-correct right-to-left order when, in fact, numerals are written left-to-right, even in Arabic!  And when employed as I intended, there is no "required" order anyway.]
