I really like the comic style portraits, they're really neat- especially Sera's.
Just like the ones from mask of the betrayer.

Ahhhhhhgh! You had to mention that one, didn't you? MotB has got to be my least favourite NWN2 DLC.
Maybe it's just that I didn't "get it", but I never enjoyed playing that one. ![]()

I dont spend my whole time playing the game staring at the icons so I dont really care..
But they are there the entire time and they are surrounded by essential information like health, mana/stamina, which character is selected etc. if they were just there for a couple of minutes no one would care.

The cartoons look out of place, but I'm sure I'll get used to it. Probably.

I really don't see what the fuss is about. Sure, Dorian's and Sera's portraits could do with some work (Dorian's makes his chin look distorted, and Sera's sticks out), and sure, the Inquisitor's picture should be an actual portrait of the character, not just a symbol, but there's no need to complain. They all (aside from the aforementioned) look really good. It's not like they're hideous, anyway.
As at least someone has already said, they could still change. They've still got 3 months to fix things.

I actually think we'll be able to choose how each character is represented: comic book, gritty art, ...
that'd be cool ![]()

OP, are you really disappointed in the icons because they don't add dimension to the characters? Really? Did you not play Origins or DA2, where the icons were literally blank-faced, staring into the middle distance headshots? Well, Zevran's was slightly different, but I only remember that (and this is after hundreds of hours of playtime) because I use a default replacement for Zev and it stands out. But that's beside the point- the icons aren't meant to be anything more than a visual guide during combat. Having the characters be "tropey" could actually works in their favor, because the distinct expressions make them an even quicker read, which can be helpful if you rotate through companions a lot or don't have a consistent group order.
That being said, I liked the E3 versions better, but I dig the new ones, too. I hope they're all in, and that we can choose which we want. I thought DA2's icons were incredibly ugly, so I don't even care if we can customize our own in DAI; as long as they don't look like they're being held hostage, I'm good.

I really like the companion pics. However, like others, I hope that we'll have more options for our Inquisitor than an icon. I'd even draw a cartoon-style pic of her myself if we were allowed to import custom pictures.

I am worried because the LIMIT the dimensions of the character. Sure at the start there are certain archetypes that characters have but you want them (and your relationship with them) to EVOLVE. Blank head shots don't say anything either way so your "picture" of them can just organically evolve.
I would be all for animated pics that change as the character evolves, maybe even have them looking in pain as their health goes down (i.e Doom style) but as it is the images are caricatures and as such they inhibit a deeper reading of them.

I hope we can choose diff stuff for our icon...a hand is just plain stupid...despite it being lore-related.

Well I know some are happy about it. But it has been mentioned several times in other other topics. I even mentioned myself that it is horrible and makes her look too comical and joker-like. I mean I think isnt really that good looking to begin with, but wow, they butchered her with the icon pic.

I also like the Inquisitor's icon, although I hope there are more choices than different coloured hands.

If you are trying to make characters more 3 dimensional and move beyond simply being their tropes surely this is the wrong way to go about it.
If your three dimensional characterization depends on character portraits, you've already lost.
Alternatively, the portraits for DA:O and DA II contained no personality at all. Even a two-dimensional characterization is better than that.
I am worried because the LIMIT the dimensions of the character.
Yes, all that time spent writing the characters, creating concept art and character models, using voice actors, and giving them unique conversations no longer applies.
Because portraits.

Not true. That is like saying bad voice acting is better than no voice acting. In the absence of something people use their imaginations.
The portrait is there throughout the entire game, not a single quest etc. allowing it to be a distraction from the dialogue etc... because well unlike dialogue that is intermittent. Portraits are there for pretty much every second of the game.
I am not saying it is a make or break thing... but it is annoying.

Wait. The style of portraits have an effect on how well a character is written?
Since when?
Just because something doesn't fit your tastes doesn't make it bad.

No portraits don't effect how well a character is written. They hark a player back to the trope contained within the portrait to the detriment of a well written and evolving character.
True in terms of the taste thing. But that could be argued about every aspect of a game, we may as well not have forums like this by that logic. The point I was making was about WHY I thought it was bad i.e it seems disconnected from the rest of the visual style and makes Sera in particular out to be a cliche.

Tropes and Cliches exist for a reason. To dismiss them as inherently bad is to misunderstand why they exist in the first place. When used well, they enrich the story. Condensing a character down to a trope or cliche at first glance, can be a good thing if done well, because it gives the audience a quick glimpse of what the character is about without having to open up the codex and read a couple of paragraphs about them. Show don't tell, less is more, etc etc.

Probably, that's because elements of UI are NOT supposed to contain one? Having a 'neutral' blank face is enough to recognize the character anyway.
This? It's like having a pic with a funny face and a party hat in one's credentials. It's ok to to make them look stylish, but they should be neutral enough (like that older icon set).
