I don't always partake in romantic content, but it IS a crucial part of the game for me and I don't think I would be as invested in the Dragon Age series if there was no romantic content.

Rather than self-inserting I create characters and build stories I personally find interesting within the game's framework... which may or may not involve romance:

Heh. My romanceless Brosca (canon, probably first import!) was actually a lot like yours.

I assumed she was always planning to join the Legion of the Dead once Rica and maybe her drunk mom were secure. Pretty big into the whole dwarf thing. She threw herself into the Wardens... And if Ogren had been an option, I might have pondered it, but she wasn't going to be hooking up with any surfacers.

Still my favorite Grey Warden, far and away. I've had happier playthroughs and ones where I managed many more feels, but something about playing my warden riding for a fall all along was just hugely satisfying.

If my first inquisitor is near as entertaining, I'll be happy.

I never got around to it, but I always toyed with the idea of a suicidal Mahariel playthrough where she was in love with Tamlen because I love angst and tragedy as much as happy fluff (well, okay... maybe a bit more)

With all the talk about romance this, race-gate that, etc, I am curious if there are people who do no-romance playthroughs while playing Bioware games, specifically speaking, for both Dragon Age games.

My "canon" Origins run is no-romance.  Hawke didn't strike me as the single type for some reason, so she's shacked up with Fenris.  I really like HAVING romances but I may not decide to actually pursue any of the available romances for whatever reason.

It's possible to kill Merrill, but it's a bit of a pain:

  • you can't complete her Act 3 quest, "Merrill, Friend or Foe"
  • you have to rival Anders 100% and complete his Act 3 quest "Questioning Beliefs"

Then you side with the Templars at the end, and she'll split. If meet her again later, and have the option to either get her back on your side, or kill her. It's a pretty contrived roundabout meta-gaming way to get her to be killable, considering how easily you can be accidentally cornered into having to kill Fenris against your will, in example.

Wow that is involved but thanks for the info, much appreeciated.

Unfortunately, it doesn't account for if you're playing a totally psycho Hawke who slaughters her entire clan.

I only had one run where I didn't romance any of the companions. This was my King Cousland run, and while I'm not sure how Bioware pictures that ending going I certainly pictured Gawain as understanding that he was now married to a beautiful, intelligent blonde. (I will note that that was all incidental to his real reasons for marrying her, of course.) Also he had sex with Iona. I think he also banged Isabella, but I don't remember perfectly. So, unless that counts as "no romance" I don't think any of my PCs managed it.

I've done 3 romanceless playthroughs of DA:O: my male dwarf noble S&S warrior (my canon Warden), my female dwarf commoner dual-wield rogue, and my male city elf 2-hander warrior.

The reason why both of my dwarves are single is simple: the height difference took away the seriousness of the available romances.  imo, a dwarf romancing anyone other than another dwarf is something to be laughed at simply because of the height difference.

The reason why my city elf is single is because he hates humans, so no to Morrigan and Leliana, and he's straight, so no to Zevran.  Simple.

I guess you could say that my dwarves are single because metagaming reasons, and my city elf is single because of RP reasons.

I have yet to do a romanceless DA2 playthrough, but I plan on doing one.  Probably a m!Hawke, tbh, but idk for sure.  As for DA:I, my second planned playthrough will be romanceless simply because with the personality I have planned, I don't see a romance working with any of the LIs.

I prefer to do romances, but sometimes I just want to take a step back from all the LIs and friendzone them if they try to make a move on me.   :P

Nope. I've never done it. I'm a closet romantic so I just don't see it happening anytime soon. The second my fav romance gave me puppy eyes I would melt. Plus Bioware is the only company that offers romance at this level in a game so I'm not about to turn that down. Anyway, I consider it important for the reason I just gave. You just don't get this kind of luvin anywhere else. Come here pixels

I wonder if I have answered this.. probaply not.

I did have one nomance playthrough in DAO and one in DA2. DA2 cause my plans with Sebastian failed, it's so hard to get him to 100% rivalry and the romance is not fullfilled without >_>

In DAI it seems like my female qunari warrior will be forever alone. I don't like nomance playthroughs at all but after the race- and gender-gates there is just no reasonable option for her.
