With all the talk about romance this, race-gate that, etc, I am curious if there are people who do no-romance playthroughs while playing Bioware games, specifically speaking, for both Dragon Age games.

My canons for the most part, are always no-romance ones, where there are occasional light flings but no actual romantic relationships taking place.

That is simply because I am a lone-wolf type of person in real life and since my canon playthroughs reflect my stances and values, they tend to not have any romances in them.

Additionally, player romances in Bioware games do not have a logical closure of any form, it usually results in some form of heartbreak or separation or just general lack of information. To me, that's too much unnecessary drama and since I am a man of simple and logical tastes, I prefer not to pursue them.

So I am curious if there are any others out there who do a playthrough with no romances involved ? If so why did you choose to not pursue a romance ?

Above all, how important is romance to you ? Is it an optional extra for you or do you see it as a necessity for your character ?

B)

While I like romances in my games, I often don't have any. For BioWare games the main reason is, that Im more interesting in NPCs who aren't available for me than official LIs. While in BG 2, NWN, ME, I liked BioWare options, in  JE, KOTOR, DA:O I didn't find LIs interesting. So very often my PC is alone becouse:

-racial reason ( my elf will never romance with human/dwarf, my human will romance only with human)

-NPC is not available ( Canderous Ordo, Sagacious Zu,Tamlen, Daveth)

-available NPC is killed (Thane in ME3)

But to be honest romance it's just nice add-on, and I don't care too much, as long as lack of romance don't stop me from knowing certain character better and develop strong bond with character I like.

I could only do non romance playthroughs in ME when playing as Femshep. If I was playing as a broshep I always ended up romancing Ashley or Jack no matter how hard I tried not to. The opposite goes for DA2 where I could easily do a no romance playthrough with male Hawke while my femHawkes always ended up romancing Isabela.

I only did romanceless runs in DA2 because none of the romances available were for me.

I only wanted Varric and Aveline!

My Wardens/Hawkes/Shepards are always engaged in romantic stories . It is actually one of my favourite part of Bioware games since Baldur's Gate 2. Something that is unique when it comes to games (strange because it is present commonly in movies and books).

Of course it is wonderful if my character can romance npc character who "meet my personal tastes" but this is not absolutely required for me to enjoy this part of the storyline.

Typically, I do romance playthroughs because they offer the player some extra content (I'm a bit of a completionist like that). I find that Bioware's relationships have been all over the spectrum. KotOR had a bit of a "less is more" approach that (I feel) did a great job of tying romantic content into the main plot, at least for male players (Carth romance was a bit weaker). Questions like "Is this really attraction or the Force Bond at work?" do come up. I also liked that the "culmination" amounted to a mere kiss, hugely problematic for a Jedi, and even after that Bastila kinda severs the relationship for a while. But I'm also a huge Star Wars fan, so a bit biased on that point.

On the other hand, I felt that other relationships, mainly in Mass Effect, just didn't draw me in as much (Miranda, Ashley, Jacob, Tali, etc).

I think where a lot of the "anti-Romance" sentiment stems from is simply the fact that many of our blockbuster/popcorn films are expected to have a romance of some kind; it's incorporated into the plot, as if it's a formula and not because "a relationship fits well here". Take the Super hero genre, for example. Outside of Blade, I can't think of too many super hero films that don't expect the hero to become involved with a companion at some point. It's similar to how writers are rarely allowed to kill super heroes off and even when it does occur, they're expected to reappear a few issues later. Often, when writing decisions are the result of business, the overall narrative can suffer as a result.

Note: I am not saying that Bioware is wrong for including romances.

My canon Warden(Dwarf Warrior Male) is not in a romance, he got with the Noble Hunters, and the Dwarven ****** in The Pearl, but he doesn't find humans attractive so he had no options to pursue an actual romance.  If Sigrun was an option though, he would have been all over that.

My canon Hawke is a pretty much a manwhore, Isabela, Merril, hell he would have got with Bethany, if she didn't die 5 minutes into the game.

My main Inquisitor is also going to be a Dwarf, he'll likely be solo as well, unless the rumours of Dagna being involved in the Inquisition are true and she's available as a romance option.  I have no expectations at all for this to happen but I'm not ruling out the possibility.

In fact in Inquisition, I have no plans laid out for romances.  Cassandra initially but I much prefer her Dragon Age 2 model, don't find the new one appealing.

I am a lover of love.  I always do a romance in every play through.  Can't help myself.  I see it as an extra layer of character interaction that I don't get to see in other games.  So I always take that extra step.  I think the real question you should be asking is...

Would any of you buy a BioWare game without romances?   I'd pay to see some responses to that question.

Yes i would.  I've done it before.  Heck, I didn't even know you could romance Balistia or Carth when I originally played KoTOR.  Even when I did my first playthrough of DA:O, w/o guide book.  I didn't romance anyone because I didn't pick the "right" responses.

Romances bring extra color to the story, but the game isn't made around just them.  I never missed them when i didn't know about therm.

I remember my first ever RPG game with romances.  I believe it was one of the Pool of Radiance games.  You could "romance" one of your NPC party members, who would go ape #$!t crazy if you died.  Was awesome.

So just leave it alone.  If people want it, they can go for it.  If they don't want it, they can skip everything entirely.

I usually do romance someone . I want to get all the content out of a game like this as I can ! I have gone without a romance in DAO but I enjoyed the game a bit more by opening up certain characters more with a romance ( i.e. Zeveran  or even Jack from ME2)

I'll probably just drop it if any of companions will hint some crap coming, like they did in both previous games. Since they were always right and I'm tired of this... this unnecessary drama, I've had enough. Because every time it's just feels like "goddamit Morrigan!" or "goddamit Anders!" and so on. I'm unable to have a crush on someone normal it seems.

In general, having the player obtain a significant other isn't a crucial part of the game for me. I don't play these types of games like a Japanese visual novel, where the point is to go through a hundred times trying to get the full picture or the main story based on what boyfriend the character ends up with and if you ended up with the "True Path".

I'm fine with no romance and usually I base it on the personality of the character I go through. If they end up with someone they do or if they end up friend carding the whole party and bragging to Bohdan about it, it happens. Amell mage character from DAO long story, flirting to him was like Hawke trying to confress his love to Aveline.

What I'm trying to say is this, the character going on a romance path usually doesn't influence my enjoyment of the game because I like seeing all the different variances, I have one rule and that is with these types of games it's not to play the same character twice. They can do similar things, but they must have different motivations driving their character forward.

Without romance, the world would be a very boring place. :)

Tell that to Schubert, Brahms, Ravel, Chopin, Gershwin, Beethoven, Blaise Pascal, Isaac Newton, Nikola Tesla, Arthur Schopenhauer, Voltaire, Immanuel Kant, Henry David Thoreau, etc.

If you want fiction...try Sherlock Holmes, Bruce Wayne

You do realize that none of those people nor the creators of the fictional ones would have been born were it not for romance, right?  :o

Origins is the only time I've really cared about an I game romance (ok, and ME2), the rest of the time I am pretty indifferent. I did all the Origins romances at least once, but in DA2 only ended up doing Merrill and Fenris's. As for Inquisition, I think I can honestly say there is not one romance option that interests me in the least (the companions are pretty unappealing to me in general). That's fine, I will still play the game for the actual main story and Varric banter, but I doubt I will bother with any of the romances at least until I have played out most other aspects of the game.

I'm unfamiliar with the lives of scientists and philosophers, but Schubert died at age 31 and had a star-crossed romance (they were not permitted to marry by custom, I believe) with a soprano.  Brahms was living with Schumann and his wife Clara (who kept some of his letters despite having been ordered to burn them) and their "complicated" relationship can only be inferred.  Ravel's Bolero is one of the most sensuous pieces of music written.  Homosexuality was not OK if a composer wanted to write music for the Church (the biggest patron), so it was frequently repressed.  It's theorized that Tchaikovsky took his life by drinking unboiled water during a cholera epidemic as a consequence of the depression caused by being unable to reconcile his sexuallity and society's norms.

Some people do choose to live without the complications that interpersonal relationships, such as romantic attachment, bring to life.  Other people live for them.  Both groups are OK.

I'll probably romance someone, but I have yet to see a romance and say "that was a worthwhile investment of resources" to any of them in any game

I think Aralan, my Dalish elf, will likely go through DA : I without romances.   He may not hate humans, but I doubt he would romance one either.  We'll see.

If you gonna play a no romance playthrough then I suggest you play either or both Pillars of Enternity and the new Torment game (both coming out soon) and forget about DAI. Both seems to have just as good a story compared to DAI and not much romance. On top of that, they would be cheaper than DAI in terms of money you have to spend buying the games.

Rerun of DA2 with a male mage.

In Origins I made 7 wardens (one for each last name) and had 4 romances. 1 warden per romance. 3 wardens had no romance (unless you count Tamlen or Gorim, but I don't).

In DA2 I had 2 Hawkes, one male one female, the female always romanced the same character, the male had no romance.

In Inquisition, since there are so many options I suspect all my Inquisitors will have a romance.
