Looking forward to the ball, looking forward to the insane fashion, i love what those Orlesian nobles are wearing. (The clothes kinda look like Thedas versions of Alexander McQueen, Viktor & Rolf.) I'm going to put as many avant-garde over the top outfits on my inquisitor as i can ![]()

I hope that we get to either craft or choose from a wide selection of masks for our visit to Orlais.

Sort of starting to see Loghain's side here. Any society that dresses its women in a Cone of Shame deserves to burn.
The first one (female Rorshach) looks damned awesome, so I suppose it's a tie, then.

Wearing masks and clothing which conceals the face is not restricted to women in Orlesian society, the men do it as well. It's all part of the Grand Game and politicking. A "cone of shame" it is not. Here is the entry from World of Thedas:
A bare face in Orlais is considered gauche, especially in the presence of a foreigner or, Maker forbid, a commoner. The Orlesian nobility is prone to wearing very elaborate masks in public, these masks are hereditary and identify one's family almost as uniquely as the heraldry on a crest. One family might be associated with a lion crest, and matching lion masks will identify them in public. Retainers and servants wear a simpler form of a family's mask. Family symbols are well known among the Orlesian public, and anyone attempting to wear a mask that doesn't belong to their house runs the risk of a quick death if discovered. Wearing makeup is another popular tradition for both men and women in Orlais. Even chevaliers wear cosmetics. There is both masculine and feminine makeup, although outsiders may have trouble telling the difference. Makeup can be a strong indicator of social standing. The quality and rarity of one's makeup-uncommon hues and consistencies are prized-speak volumes of one's status.

The portion of the game set in Orlais and Halamshiral is going to be epic. I'm crossing my fingers for an elaborate side quest where we have to procure the makings for an Orlesian gown. The first pic almost remindes me of the Miraluka from KOTOR 2.
Well, I would rather not go shopping for a gown - stealing one (as part of the Orlesian Game) on the other hand would be nice
(embarassing a noble in the process and maybe getting to burn the thing in the end? - Cool!)
greetings LAX
ps: Still don't want my female Inquisitors forced into dresses and skirts (dressing up for say a ball, ok - but at least in something I can look at without thinking "ugly and impractical - I wouldn't wear that if I was a girl!" - there's nice looking outfits that fit the period as well, like hunting-costumes (ornate leather armor - not very protective, but nice to look at and nothing you might trip over or hindering your movement otherwise!))

God I hope we get to wear some ridiculously elaborate Orlesian fashion! Orlais is my favorite Thedas nation. There is just so much that I find intriguing. I would LOVE to be able to play the "Game". Charisma-based characters are sooo fun to play.

Yeah, I know about their fashion sense from The Masked Empire as well, but that doesn't stop that contraption from looking completely silly. Sincee you mention masks, it's actually interesting that none of the nobles we've seen have been wearing the half-masks that seem to be the standard noble's mask.
Also, Orlesian pet fashion:

I think you mean fabulous!
I agree that it is interesting that we haven't seen anyone wearing a mask yet.

It's probably one of those cases where 'lore' gets disregarded by the games themselves. The last two pictures perhaps try to rectify that? There are good practical reasons why the whole mask thing is silly, but then again, Orlais is pretty much Lala-land with a vaguely French accent.
For fun and comparison, here's a link to one of the slightly more 'decadent' traditional balls in Paris, the 'Bal Vénitien':
Most balls (like the 'Bal de l'X') are pretty conservative, but this one attracts fashion designers (who in the past wouldn't have been welcome at the great aristocratic balls, by the way). Special praise for Jacky Blanchard and his fabulous costume

I live in Lala-land. 99% of the people here do not dress like that. If you want to see bizarre outfits that will melt the eyes and stun the senses, you need to go to West Hollywood.

I meant Lala-land in this sense http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Lalaland.
But I just found out it's also a nickname for Los Angeles. Seems even eldritch bunnies have things left to learn

Eating? That's so last season. Everybody knows that its all about starving yourself this season. Watch. Next season it will be all about pudding hats. Orlesian fashion is so easy to predict.

I don't really like the second. It seems more a parody of fashion than anything someone would actually wear.
Though I'm guessing she's intended to be a comedic character. Vivienne's stuff does a better job of being both kinda ridiculous and kinda cool, and thus passing as fashion

Vivienne is 'Absolutely Fabulous' kind of silly, the second is 'clownesk', as they say here.
But it may be that it's intended to be a 'funny' costume in the context of a masked ball.
Doesn't mean that you can't have a 'serious' discussion with Comtesse Elodie - perhaps even with deadly consequences.

Had to make a quick tribute in loving agreement.
It's official. Miralukas infiltrated the orlesian court. Aliens are among us!

I don't think they have abandoned the whole mask thing. In the following illustration you can clearly see that some of the ball attendees are shielding their faces:

Nice hi-res picture. Also makes it possible to recognise what concept art got 'copied and pasted' into this picture. You can see Elodie's costume as well, once from the front (dance floor, centre-right), once from the rear (bottom right)
Edit: Ah, and the left balcony.

God i rly hope they won't force me into some kind of orlesian ball or at least they will allow me avoid this plot.
Unfortunately you may be disappointed, because I remember a bio dev once saying that we'll be exactly be doing this at one point in the game.

Yeah, I think the main website's little intro snippet on Orlais mentioned the Inquisition going to a ball in order to ferret out an assassin, or something like that. So it won't all be fun and games... just a little.

Well all they said it will be in the game not if it will be avoidable or not.Im not sure to what extent but as they show during demos there are plots we can avoid so i hope that is one of that.
If have to i hope at least i can go in my normal outfit and that i won't be forced to do anything.
