word, I'm glad they're not setting that in stone.
I won't be offended by a strictly human protag cause I'm sure they'll do it well, but I would be bummed out by the missed opportunity. The thing that made Bioware famous was DA:O and the variety you had with creating your own non-vanilla protagonist.
Most video games make you play human, period. Part of BW's special recipe is how fleshed out their fantasy/sci-fi universes are, to the point that a non-human character has just as much of a potential to be the hero, too. Why should we be limited to imagining only a human, out of all the many different species that exist in those worlds, should be hte hero of the story solving every problem?

I was disappointed as well. I wanted to play as a Salarian or a Geth or Maybe, An Asari. It'd give the storyline a lot of diversity, Pick your race and your back story.

Y'all need to look at the confirmed features thread on Scuttle. They have all the rumours and stuff there along with sources and this thing has been debunked. Possibility of playing as an alien has not been ruled out it is simply not confirmed.

To answer: I want the same thing I got in ME trilogy. That's why I am even here posting...I am passionate about the past game. That character driven (fully voiced with emotions...I romanced Thane *tears*), personal growth focused storyline, whilst exploring the galaxy. I want a new (non-Shepard) human character I can relate to and grow with throughout the story.
I experience the aliens, their differing emotions and psychology, different cultures through interacting with them. The contrast is important to me personally speaking.
Edit: I would like more human customization in the Asian spectrum. I can make my character look Native American.

This is the exact quote and should be added to the first post in the thread imo.
It's a bit of a misleading answer, I wish Mike could clarify the "For sure your main character will be human" bit. My best guess is that it means the protagonist is human but they are considering letting the player control squadmates.
Personally, and there probably is time for them to change this, being able to actually play as an Alien for the protagonist would be a very big plus for me. It's not a show stopper but I would value that very highly.

Samantha Traynor is the only lesbian/lesbian character to ever appear in Mass Effect.
Shepard could rp as lesbian with Liara (she is bi), Kelly (she is bi), Allers (she is bi) or Traynor (she is lesbian). Male Shepard could only rp as a gay man with Kaidan (he is bi) and Steve (he is gay). Limited for gay male Shepard or the gay male player who wants to romance a male npc (bi or gay).

That isn't my interpretation. For sure the human option is there. As for the other species, they're up in the air.
But as I said: to each their own.
