Wasn't the fate of the Dalish Hinterlands discussed by Alistair in DA2?
A tiny bit.
He mentioned it didn't turned out too good, and he promised to fixed if after his own adventure.

Well to be honest look what they did with Anders no matter what you do to him or justice he always is grey warden and meets justice so well...
For some reason Marethari seemed to owe some sort of debt to Flemeth. Flemeth knows their likely destination. This would suggest that this was planned by Flemeth as her contingency plan. Presumably she didn't give Marethari the amulet in case the clan managed to get themselves killed along the way.
Strangely enough not the whole clan seems to have travelled to Kirkwall. In the Dalish Origin there is a whole bunch of children but no sign of them in DA2. May be Marethari didn't wholly trust the ship captain to transport them safely to Kirkwall, or may be they didn't have sufficient money or goods to trade, so the clan split, leaving the more vulnerable ones behind under the charge of Ashalle and some of the warriors. Why they didn't leave the Halla as well is harder to understand but I suppose they needed them to pull the wagons. As it was the Halla all died, either as a result of the sea voyage or some sickness they acquired through being in a new area and not being resistant to it.
It would seem to me that the original intention was not to stay for that long beneath Sundermount. When they set out Marethari may have been expecting to return once her debt to Flemeth was discharged. Then Merrill got obsessed with her mirror and involved with the demon on the mountain and Marethari started placing her welfare above the good of the clan. They even acknowledge that after Marethari gets herself killed. Merrill also comments on the fact that they shouldn't have stayed so long in one location. Losing the Halla was not an insurmountable problem; staying so close to a large human settlement and a spirit infested mountain was. They should have moved on immediately after the business concerning the amulet was dealt with. Had they done so, they might well have returned to Ferelden, even if only by the long landward route. The clans get together every 10 years. If this is clans from all over Thedas and not just a particular area, then they would have the means and experience of travelling by sea. Actually I think it more likely it is just the clans in a certain area but that could still involve crossing water.
So Ashalle and the others were waiting for the clan to return to Ferelden. When they received the boon they naturally went back south since it was important to the future of the clan to take up the offer. They may well have sent word north to Marethari and either she told them to wait there until they returned, or they heard nothing back and assumed the worst. They then just joined up with Lanya's/Zathrian's clan.
It is not a perfect explanation but for the most part it does seem to fit the facts.

I think that DA2 just didn't make elven child models; it seems reasonable to believe they're still there.

Hmmm. This could have made sense, but why would Ashalle be completely unable to be contacted by Mahariel?
A tiny bit.

The idea that there would be no news about the Hinterlands - a rather substantial region that has been bestowed to the Dalish - doesn't really make sense. Whether or not it worked, it seems implausible that there wouldn't be any news about the Dalish being gifted their own lands. I'd imagine some Kirkwall elves would have had an interest in heading to a place governed by elves.
Frankly, it seems like the developers simply didn't put much effort into consolidating the two narratives, because the complete absence of the Dalish Warden will explicitly contradict some of the player choices to the contrary, Ashalle shouldn't be gone managing the Hinterlands if the Warden wasn't Dalish (and she wouldn't have even been the one to go to Ferelden and attend the funeral if the Hero of Ferelden committed the ultimate sacrifice), and the idea that no one would mention that part of Ferelden was gifted to the Dalish seems more than a bit absurd.

On the other hand, the Hinterlands were a part of Ferelden devastated by the Blight. I can imagine settling on such real estate might be unappealing to many, especially city elves without the faintest clue how to farm or hunt.
