Just come to realize that Mass Effect is obviously not the RPG you guys are interested in. It never has been. That's fine, just don't demand Bioware do something they never have done, or even attempted to do, with a series, then wonder why it doesn't happen.

why not? Bioware should just never do anything new? You assert that you're not saying they should just copy and paste the Original Trilogy.....but then you say "dont wonder why when they don't do anything different".   ummm seems like a bit of a conundrum. Also a great way to make a great series seem stale as all hell.

Mass Effect 1 was pretty much the RPG I've always wanted. The problem is that the sequels moved so far away from that concept that they weren't the Mass Effect I had come to know and love. They weren't RPGs with some shooter elements, they were linear shooters with some RPG elements here and there. Mission Start, hallway, shooting gallery, hallway, shooting gallery, conversation, shooting gallery, Mission Summary (rinse and repeat)

People who think that piracy is inherently evil, I would say it depends on perspective. If we are a pirate like Captain Jack Sparrow, why the hell not. I mean do we really need a Galaxy destroying threat to be satisfied. They tried the story with Hawke in DA II, where the character is a merc / freeelancer, but I blame the execution for the failure.

What is the point of going over board and playing the hero again, if we have the same RGB ending. Even if we dont get a RGB ending, it would still feel lackluster, no threat can ever top the reapers.

So, why bother with the soldier thing, being a smuggler or pirate would give us enough leeway. We can do whatever we want. There can all shades of grey, plus we won't have a sense of duty binding us down.

And why would people think that it would be GTAesqueue, if they take the pirate route. It won't. Being a pirate or a smugler doesn't mean that there would be more freedom, they can still tie us down with story driven narrative. There can also take a multi region approach, something that the DA: Inquisition is taking.

Have several planets we can explore, some uninhabited, others with sprawling cities. Most of planets we went through in past ME3, had the same freaking architecture, except the Asari homeworld. So its time for us to explore.

Go to volus homeworld, or turian, see different places.

Don't care what we are, as long as the story is good and makes sense.

I just want the game to be Arkham Origins, where they made the game just for the sake of making a game. Or better yet, how the star wars books / novels / comics took the story after the episode 6. Resurrecting the emperor using clones, bringing the old gang back together to fight the new  (old) evil, its basically the same thing again.

Neither I want the old party members again, Maybe Liara and Wrex can have cameos (cause they live for a freaking 1000 years). But nothing where we have to engage them directly.

Although it would be fun if we are chased by shadow broker (Liara) agents, or some one pays us (forces us) to destroy a cruiser which is carrying Krogan over lord (Wrex).

Going the pirate route is interesting, but it would only make sense in the context of a Bioware game if it meant that going "pirate" was one out of multiple paths your custom protagonist can take.

Going strictly pirate does not match Mass Effect's established military aesthetic, and could be considered an even more shoehorned plot, esp for the many people who no doubt enjoyed being a N7 operative.

For example, perhaps your protagonist can start out either as a N7 op, or a merc/pirate, or a this/that, and somehow your protagonist discovers some nefarious threat, and of course you rise up to the challenge. The way you go about defeating said-threat naturally depends on your background. In line with BW's running theme of unity/cooperation, the later parts of the story require you to collaborate with Alliance people if you're a pirate, or vice versa.

I have a feeling BW isn't going to design something as complicated as that (and that's not even taking the potential of playable races into consideration, who have their own military ops), but if it isn't going to be something like that, then I really don't think there could be a pirate-esque protagonist.

And it doesn't have to match it. You act as if the MEU is a strictly militaristic universe, simply because we spent a trilogy playing as a space marine. It has much more to offer.

MEU isn't strictly military but because of the trilogy and all of the N7 paraphernalia , the ME game has been branded like that. If Bioware knows anything about product branding, ME is probably going to have a military vibe again. I can only see a strictly pirate game happening as a mini-game or DLC.

Considering BW has a very military fetish, I wouldn't be surprise were they to go that route again.

Personally am intrigued by the notion of the next ME game taking a similar approach as Star Trek--that of interstellar adventures together with a crew on an exploration vessel. I can already here the "Where no man has ever gone before" phrase in my head.

I think of Mass Effect as it's own brand. When I see N7, I specifically think of Shepard. Mass Effect encompasses much more than that. They say that we won't be "Shepard 2.0", but then they have us in the distinguished company of him when they revealed the next protagonist would be N7. Not a good start to differentiating the two.

Also, I'm not advocating our character be a full blown pirate from the get go, and that being the sort of narrative told. I'm suggesting the freedom to go and do such things if we so please. "Oh, there's a lone cargo ship over there....let's board them."

I'm stuck with an idea for ME4, so I'm gonna dump it on you guys.

I think we should start as a prisoner in a ship, doing grunt work repairing the relays. As the relays that we are going to repair are not functioning, the trip takes time. For compensate that, they put you in crio sleep between trips. In those sleeps we have flashbacks to uh... Flash out our character.

What I was thinking the protagonist should have been, is a defeated dictator/leader of some outlaw region, kinda like what we thought Terminus was packing with them. But your region holds strategic value (maybe a convergence of relays, I dunno), and some major empire took upon themselves to releave you from it. Who these guys are is up to the player, as you tailor your story through the flashbacks. Two options is what I have in mind, but it could be more: The Council or some terminus major player, like Aria or the Yahg. And you were defeated your empire that had such promise is annexed, and you sold to a prison ship.

In between those flashbacks the protag would get to know some of the prisioners, and form your group. You get some plans to escape these hellish place (you choose who you want to affiliate and how you want to escape), and everyone wants you on their team, because you're a capable leader, despite the loss you suffer. And you know the region the ship is getting into because It's next to your former empire. And the regions is seeing some instability because of the inevitable conflict between the Terminus and Citadel. So maybe if you reclaim what's your you could prevent a shattering galactic war.

That's all I have though, thoughts?

"Pirate" is just such a large term, it seems.

And it's really not the right one. It serves better in use as a way to describe how one *could* play the new Shepard. More of a evil, self-serving warlord who, as how pirates are portrayed in the MEU, is someone who deals with human, drug, and weapon trafficking, annihilating all competition to become the sole entity.

Going with this, another way through would be to take more of a Garrus/Archangel type approach, assembling a team of exceptional individuals to attempt to topple the criminal organizations now rampant in the post-war galactic landscape.

Or, as a third option, a political savant who sees chaos as a ladder, and attempts to unite what is there to become a functional political force in the reborn galaxy.

I don't like the word pirate but I wouldn't mind it if the next lead character of ME franchise came from a background similar to that of Captain Malcolm Reynolds from Firefly/Serenity.

For those that don't know, Malcolm Reynolds was a soldier fighting for independence from the Alliance, he was on the losing side of war, that experience left him a changed man, broken, jaded, cynical. Him and the crew of his ship serenity are mercenaries. I can see a lot of potential in a premise like this for a game.

A mercenary? Perhaps. A pirate? I'm not so sure. As some others have suggested, the origins and background of the protagonist doesn't really matter to me. I'd be fine if every protagonist we played was a prisoner like TES. Ultimately what's important to me is a great story, great characters, and something you can immerse yourself into entirely. As Kreia once said in KotOR II, "It's not the destination that matters. It's the journey." If BioWare believes they can make an amazing story as an N7 operative, perhaps even better than the original trilogy, I'm on board. I've had over a decade of entertainment and wonderful memories from BioWare games and their writers are absolutely incredible, gifted, and very talented. I have faith they will not let us down.

Ugh. Do you WANT Liara to be the protagonist of ME:Next? Because they'll do it.

I get that she lives for a millenium. What's creepy is people who want to romance her again with a different PC. Crank out trilogy after trilogy where you bang her over and over again as a different PC each time.

Yeah it's kind of hilarious when people think Mass Effect is Shepard. Lol. Shepard is just one little human in the whole universe that has myriads of different stories that can be told if Bioware can use some good fantasy in their mind since... you know, mass effect is sci fi fantasy. It should not be about only one human and her story.

As much as i love Liara, i'd prefer we see another asari (and ofc with not the exact same personality as hers) tbh. Liara's story ended, sure she lives long but her story isn't anymore about the next protagonist.

I feel like Liara will become the Leliana of ME. Because of her Shadow Brokeryness, she has a higher chance of having a role, big or small, and like Leliana she would never be romanceable again.

After all pretty much all the current Star Trek video games really suck. I wouldn't mind ME filling that void
I can easily see that working. Although there is no true counterpart to Starfleet in ME, the cooperation between the races through the Council/Spectres and multi-racial N7 ops seens in ME3MP ala Reaper War, kind of resemble that partnership. And of course, it's space. Much to explore

It really doesn't matter what role your character is in at the start of the game. If Bioware wants to tell any kind of a story we're going to have to go down a forced path eventually. NPCs reacting different to our character is nice in RPGs with less focus on cinematic storytelling, but in Mass Effect? People complain that ME never does this or that, but shoehorning in every RPG element under the sun doesn't make the game better. ME1 tried but ended up with a redundant leveling system, a sloppy loot system where you're lucky to switch out your armor or guns more than 3-4x a playthrough, and all guns fire the same, and the inventory system was a cluttered mess.

Just come to realize that Mass Effect is obviously not the RPG you guys are interested in. It never has been. That's fine, just don't demand Bioware do something they never have done, or even attempted to do, with a series, then wonder why it doesn't happen. It's like me wondering why in Kingdom Hearts there aren't any dialogue trees, all script is set in stone, and then complaining that I don't have a say in how the story or characters develop, then trying to say it isn't a true RPG.

Bioware is ultimately just Bioware. They aren't Obsidian, they aren't CDprojekt, they aren't Bethesda. They are Bioware, and they do things the way Bioware wants to. None of us can deny that Bioware doing what they wanted to created a franchise whose legacy will stand the test of time in the same way Zelda and Final Fantasy have, amongst others. They've made mistakes, none of them quite as "franchise ruining" as some like to claim, but what studio hasn't made mistakes? Well, I guess Atlus never really makes bad games, are super consumer friendly and awesome, but they aren't as mainstream, nor would I consider them AAA, even if their games are better than 90% of AAA games out there.

Of course I'm not a vision-less moron who thinks the next ME game should just copy and paste what the original trilogy did either. They could really expand upon the service history system from the original trilogy.

Spot on. I like Mass Effect because it's unique as an RPG, even the first one was made with a cinematic, story driven, type of role play in mind. Not a "Do whatever the hell you want" type of RPG that Bethesda usually makes, now those types have their place, but they've always felt a bit soulless to me, not fleshed out, I don't get much pleasure playing those types, especially compared to Mass Effect.

The series should evolve, but not become completely different from what made it unique.

Hmmm I like the pirate idea. They can keep their unity themes and character development.

Easy plot idea. Be a pirate, get a crew (out of a selection of people pick a subset, gives variety :D ), crew mutinys at some point. How many crew members mutiny is determined by your friendship with them. Slap in a main story line or some kind of direction and we're set.

Ps. If ammunition runs out, we can detach our futuristic wooden legs (Can pass it off as antique value) and beat the enemies with them, or have our robot parrot attack their faces.

BW stated the next protagonist has something to do with N7 not that we will be an N7 in the next game.

It could be a former N7 operative discharged after a failed mission who went mercenary and now we are leading a mercenary band. Maybe N7 is the protagonist signature like the infamous mercenary leader "rogue N7".

At this point it can be everything

Was hoping for a rogue like Han Solo character as the protagonist in the next game. Especially when Bioware themselves said they didn't want to do another Shepard. Yet now we get another N7 human soldier. Basically the same background as Shepard......

I just don't get how or why Bioware would say they wanted to avoid a Shep like character, then create another N7 soldier.
