I'm really tired of the "rivalry" between The Witcher and Dragon Age. It's been going on as long as I remember. They're both great game series with differing strengths and weaknesses.

There's something oddly satisfying about a decapitation finisher, I blame Brutal Legend for this

No, they don't think it's "too hardcore" for their audience.

And no, I don't think it's an engine limitation.

Then why no decapitations?

Oh I don't know, maybe because decapitating Arl Howe and then talking to him right after that was weird. Or that time when it happened with Leliana. Or Zevran. Or... you get the idea.

Or maybe, just maybe, because they think it doesn't look right. To be honest, I've always found it looked kind of silly in DA:O. But hey, that's just me.

Funny pointing at The Witcher 3 for this. On The Witcher 3 forum the general consensus is/was that there was way too much of this sort of thing in the gameplay shown of the game.

im sure bioware havent fallen so low that they are scared to put chopping off limbs in combat into the game, what do you think swords and axes are for? to whack people until they roll away defeated? this isnt the A-team

"Remember when Dragon Age had decapitations?"

Pepperidge farm remembers.

Anyway, I don't really care for decapitations. The exploding enemies are good enough for me.

exploding is good for a lot of the mages abilities but someone shouldnt really explode if you hit them with a dagger, if they do someone needs to check orlais' water supply or something ^^

decapitations are actually nigh impossible to pull off in one swing with anything short of a greatsword/claymore/zwei-hander you get the idea...

though in the same game where bats and swords seem to be interchangeable what can you expect

To either stab or inflict deep wounds that kill.

interestingly when i played the witcher 2 i didnt notice much in the way of beheading and DA:O only had that one animation where you took a swing with a melee weapon, i never stopped to wonder if it was still a thing if you used a mace ^^

Yeah, really it'd be more realistic for you to do something like hamstring the opponent then slit their throat or gouge out their eyes with a swift-drawn dagger if we're talking actual medieval CQC.  But since we aren't....

Nah, doesn't bother me that much.  The chunky kibble thing is a little bizarre, but it captures the force of attacks quite nicely - though one does have to wonder if it will lead to chunky kibble cutscenes a la the decapitation ones from Origins!  I'd almost pay to see that...

To be honest I don't really care. I will say I found the exploding enemies to be a little over the top but I am sure I will get used to it.

I think multiple stabs to the vital organs is the best way to do it. Just do an animation where if an opponent's health is close to zero, sometimes the character will repeatedly thrust his weapon through the opponent's body, and for the final thrust he sinks his weapon deep into the body, twists the weapon, and pulls it out.

For maces and warhammers, just an animation where the player repeatedly hits the opponent in the different parts of the body

For axes, just sink your weapon on their collarbone.

I'm not too concerned with decapitation itself as much as appropriately having death being gritty those decapitations were supposed to allude to

You can always play DAO if decapitation in a DA game is essential to you.

I really doubt it has anything to do with  the leliana or arl howe decapitations. Cant really confuse game play mechanics with the storytelling.  But I do agree fully with the OP.   This shift from the dark, mature, gritty style into a more  cartoony, approachable, flash style doesnt sit well with me. I do hope Inquisition has the balls to  show mature things, because it makes it more beliavable and consistent.

You dont have to show all those things to be mature.. I get that. But  DAO at least showcased some, you can just downgrade from that.  The exploding bodies  in DA2 was just too funny and comical when a downward sword slash makes someone explode into a million peices instead of just cutting in half.   Only abilitiies like walking bomb or so should be able to pull that off in order to be believable.

Varied finishing moves (lulz) would be nice as seeing PEW PEW SPLOSIONS when you stab someone in the leg seems kind of...a slight overreaction tbh. The only way they should be exploding is if you use some kind of spell on them or a bomb. Make the deaths fitting. AND COOL.
