I love playing the rogue but did more so in Origins because I liked bouncing between ranged and melee on they fly and used a bit of both based on the battle and my party. You could do it in 2 but it was kind of a pain to transition from archer to daggers since you would have to fully pause and change weapons. I hope DA:I does something more like in Origins where you can transition smoothly between the two but I'm not getting my hopes up.

I have always thought of the rogue class as one which gets things done by non violent means.diplomacy(talking your way out),stealth and mechanical skills are what I most often associate with them.(also selfishness, cowardice and greed)
And If a fight has to happen then there are smoke bombs, kicking dust in the peoples eyes, going for the groin, pointing and saying"hey whats that over there!" and fleeing.
It would have been cool if you could win the game without ever fighting because you were THAT cunning but.....
I think I'm going to try something like that when I get the game, playing as an artificer who never attacks the enemy directly but laughs and jeers and taunts from across a heavily trapped battlefield.

I've been planning a rogue Trevelyan for my first Inquisitor ever since I heard "Artificer" was a specialization. I always play a mage first and want to see if I can achieve a similar level of support/crowd-control through different means this time around.
The fact that the rogue gameplay looks vastly improved only convinces me further.

I usually always go with Mage for my first playthrough, of any RPG. Across this genre, they're definitely my favorite class. Played as a Mage the first time around for both DA:O and DA:2.
However I am strongly reconsidering...also thinking about going with a rogue like you OP. I've noticed how incredibly powerful and flexible the rogues are in DA:I so far (based on what we've seen). Sera and Rogue Inquisitor absolutely dominate the battlefield in terms of damage. Which makes sense, because rogues are all about DPS and hitting hard.
It does make Mages and Warriors seem significantly weaker though. I always felt the Dragon Age games had good balancing in terms of one class being stronger than another (although Mages were always the most flexible/varied), but from we've seen so far, Rogues take the cake.
Whereas Iron Bull and Mage Inquisitor are during between 50-500 damage per hit/spell, Sera and Rogue Inquisitor are doing 50-3000. It's crazy.
For the sake of tradition I'll probably end up being a Mage for my first run. It honestly won't really matter since I plan to play as everyone/thing eventually. Still, Rogues are looking pretty fu*king impressive.

Duel wielding rogue is my go to class, but ever since seeing the archery I really can't decide between the two. I'm hoping for some kind of weapon swap button like in DA:O so that I can use both without it being a chore.
Take this with a grain of salt because I cant remember where I heard it but all rogues can use bows there is no archer specific specialisation. So it seems your weapon swap with may come true

I've no idea how tough it's going to be mid-combat, but switching weapons is possible. Varric can now be outfitted with daggers, for once, so he doesn't have to use Bianca as a club. I keep telling him that's why he has bolts but he never listens.

Never really saw the value of the rogue class, I mean if you want to focus on melee dps then a 2h warrior is roughly as effective but with significantly better survivability and archery always seemed pointless when you could just roll a mage and throw fireballs and lighting. Which essentially leaves rogues as useful for...opening locked doors and chests? My inner completionist demands that I play as one this time around since my canon warden and hawke were a warrior and mage respectively, but since the Knight Enchanter spec was revealed not sure if I can resist that temptation.

Just to have a little more info, fun and convo with this topic. I looked up the rogue talents, and what we saw in the demo related to archers. We didn't get to see all the talents displayed, but they look cool to me. I am a huge fan of ranged weapons, so I'm intrigued by the talents.
I said it before; I would seriously consider playing the rogue as a first play through with an emphasis on archery.
Notice these cool arrow talents. The one on the bottom left I haven't seen used, but if I had to guess, it does some bleeding type of damage. The target symbol in the middle did high damage in the game demos we've seen so far, as did the one on the far right (explosive damage). The one at the top is stealth, I think, not archery.
The blades up top is the knife throwing icon from one of the leaked demos. The one on the right is the muti-arrow/backflip icon. Both are kinda cool movies.

Hm... I think that being able to swap between daggers and archery will make or break the rogue class for me. Sure, I can have fun either way, but I would really like to play as a hybrid that has decent melee and ranged attacks. Having to go into the menu to swap weapons like in DA2 made me focus solely on one or the other (and it was always daggers, since Sebastian was IMO a much better archer).
Sera was handling her bow like a boss in the demos though, so I'm still kind of tempted to use rogue on my first run.

I played a sword and boarder in DAO and an archer rogue in DA2. I may go with mage next time around, but we'll see. Rogue is still viable.

Keep in mind that demos always have finicky numbers. It could be that Sera had her damage output artificially inflated in order to make the encounters take less time. Or they may not have bothered balancing rogues yet.
So, long story short, just play the class you want.

I prefer rogue class then mages would be next. Though I did prefer Bethany over Carver, so didn't play mage much in DA2.

I think rogue is my preferred class to play, overall. But with DA2 and DA:I, I feel the need to play as a mage in my first playthroughs, for story reasons. Just seems like with the mage-templar conflict, it's the more interesting way to experience the story the first time through.
So my plan is to play as a mage, but every so often I get a twinge of "maybe I should go rogue..."

I have been a long time mage fan but after much consideration, I might switch to rogues as my favorites.
Mages are spellcasters who depend on intensive study to create their magic. To mages, magic is a talent and a difficult, rewarding art. When they are prepared for battle, mages can use their spells to devastating effect. When caught by surprise, they are, for the most part, vulnerable. A mage's strength is their spells, everything else is secondary. They learns new spells as they experiment and grow in experience, and they can also learn them from other mages. In addition, over time a mage learns to manipulate their spells so they go farther, work better, or are improved in some other way.
On the other hand...

Dual-dagger rouge is my go to as well for both DA:O and DA2; for me mages either die to easily or even if I try to keep my PC mage away from the battle the enemies still manage to gang up on me cause the party AI isn't quite smart enough. And warrior combat is way to slow, especially in DA:O--i had to fight as Sten in the final battle for a little bit and even then I was yelling at him to hurry up.

Yep, I agree there, mages do die quickly, warriors are too slow for me.
I sneak in, backstab their caster, send the rest of the party in to start attacking while my rogue Warden tanks and clears the casters or the big bad bass. Stun and stun attacks makes it doable.
So by the time the rest get there, I already have the casters dead, then the boss half way.

It would be great to switch from bows to daggers and back in a seamless manner. Kingdoms of Amalur was like that with two weapons. If it's like that in DAI, then I'm even more tempted.
In a way it represents a desire to have a more physical character than the ranged attacks I prefer.

I'm thinking of going Dual-dagger rouge for my first playthough.
cause my Cannon Warden is a Warrior, and my cannon Hawke is a mage.
