Anyone else really, really, really hoping this game doesn't pigeon-hole us into an ending or various endings that all end in what has been the most over-used cliche in this generation of gaming?  I am of course talking about the

Hero sacrifices himself to save the world cliche.

This trope has been so overdone I am beyond sick of it at this point.  What I loved about Dragon Age: Origins was that it gave you options.  Wanted to have your cake and eat it too? Perform the dark ritual with Morrigan.   Would you rather be a boring ponce (I'm kidding it's your choice) and heroically lay down your life by forgoing hot sex and get a bittersweet ending?  You could do that as well!  All the bases were covered.   This was something a certain team forgot with a certain other game that shall not be mentioned.

Here's hoping there's options at the end of Dragon Age Inquisition.  I want my happy ending!  I  also think Sean Connery in The Rock said it best.

"Losers try their best.  Winners go home and f*** the prom queen."

Well, Bioware said the game continues after you beat the main quest so I don't think the Inquisitor dies, or at least has to die.

I never care as much about the hero as I do the world. In the end you're saving everyone except your hero.

Plus "Hero sacrifices himself to save the world cliche. " is hardly overdone imo, most games you somehow magically defeat some incredibly powerful foes and manage to survive. The hero actually dying gives a lot more taste to the story, it's why I loved my Mass Effect ending.

DAO had the potential for pretty happy endings. Ending up with LI doing pretty much w/e you wanted to. DA2 didn't really have an ending, it just said Hawke vanished... and that's all. It does mention staying with LIs so that could be a happy ending. No reason to think DAI will go a drastically different route. You probably can die, you probably can live (more or less) happily ever after (Until DA4 comes out and it turns out you were possessed by a demon and are now the new big bad, lol).

Well, I'm sure not everyone considered having sex with Morrigan as cake, but I get what you're saying. :P I've had enough of the heroically tragic endings as well, but I imagine we'll have a few choices on what happens based on our actions.

You liked the Mass Effect 3 ending?  More power to you I suppose but uh...

I don't mind happy endings, so long as they feel earned. It's one thing to luck into killing a god and walking away. It's another thing entirely to suffer through mud, blood, sweat and tears and earn every single inch of your victory, along with the happy ending that accompanies it. As long as the reward feels legitimate, I have no qualms with a 'payoff' at the end of a narrative that doesn't involve your hero falling on a sword for the sake of everyone else.

I actually want to fail to save the world in my first playthrough, but that's because I'm an *******.

Seriously, I think there should be a broad range of endings from 'Yourchapterhascrumbled.jpg' type ones to 'everybody lives' ones.  I'd like any extremes to be hard to get though - it was hard to feel a great sense of reward from completing the ME2 'Suicide' Mission without deaths when it was so absurdly easy just by following common sense (upgrade everything, do all the side quests first, resolve conflicts sensibly).

They prefer to move on and sell the next hero. After all if you wrote the same hero for 5-7 years you'd be ready to move on also.

Just my opinion, not needed to be based on fact. I prefer happy endings as real life sucks.

The ending, happy or tragic, should be appropriate and follow from previous events. That's my only requirement.

See, this is perfect.   Why couldn't Casey Hudson and Friends have just...done THAT?  People kept lambasting the ending haters as "only wanting a Disney-ending."  But then I kept saying....Why not BOTH?  Why couldn't we have options for both a happy ending and a sad ending?  Almost like....endings that depended on our choices we made throughout the game.  That way, those who wanted a dark, brooding, super depressing ending could get their wish, and those who wanted a happy ending could also be satisfied.  But now we're getting a little off topic.

I had no idea you could play this game after you beat it.  Guess I should have found that out before I made this topic.  Oh well.

They said there is ending where demons win so he rather can die unless it is like in The bard's tale ending.

I'd like it if you could get an incredibly happy sunshine and lollipops ending, but doing so was devilishly hard. Other endings would range from 'you have doomed the world and are now a thrall of the evil you've fought' to 'you sacrificed yourself and saved the world, but things are still crappy' to 'you saved the world and things are okay, but you lost some of your friends along the way.'

I would even like a secret 'ultimate' ending that could only be gotten by Correct Import from Keep + Perfect Play through, or Previously finished DA:I + Perfect Play through.

I'm yet to experience a heroic death ending, even after ME3...

Anyway, I'm sure no one will be pigeonholed into a heroic sacrifice in this game, though whether they find the actual outcomes satisfying is a different story.

I will echo the sentiment of another poster about having to earn your victory if you want it, and yes, that should probably include sacrifices somewhere.

To be fair, I imagine this would require a lot of work.  My main problem with the ME3 ending is actually its lack of in-universe logic, and the fact that no matter what kind of Shepard you have they just sat there with a big dumb expression on their face and listened to what the Catalyst was saying without any real reactions beyond 'huh, how interesting', which I don't think anyone would do in that situation.  Honestly I did want a bittersweet ending for ME3, I just didn't want Casey Hudson's idea of a bittersweet ending, which seemed to involve plot gimmicks and pointlessly altering the nature and themes of the universe and series as a whole.

Fair point, but if DA: Origins could do it, so could Mass Effect 3.

So would it be cruel of me to say we've already got this red stuff that causes wanton destruction, this blue stuff that can be used to fuel magic to control minds and this green light that messes with reality?

Fair point, but if DA: Origins could do it, so could Mass Effect 3.

Origins had one game of choices to compile, in my experience about 40 hours or so of gametime.  ME3 had 3 games to compile, about 75-8 hours or so, nearly double the work.  Assuming that this would require roughly double the time to complete, then ME3's release would've been massively delayed, and EA wouldn't allow that.  I hate that ME3's ending was such a copout as well, but it was a lot of factors I think.

And now I'm off topic.
