Okay, so its been a couple years since they first talked about it. But to recap, so far they've said the following:
1) The next mass effect won't be about another Shep-esque character, you won't be a soldier, or at least you won't be a soldier like Shep was.
2) In an effort to lend ease to the storytelling, it will be sufficiently distanced from the original trilogy, that the new trilogy will be minimally effected by it.
While these things are subject to change, obviously, what they mean is that the most likely scenario that I see is one which takes place primarily in another galaxy, and about 50 to 100 years after the events of ME3. At most what I see them doing, if they allow imports of any kind, or even if they just let you chose the ending you went with from 3 (like they did in 2), is that they will probably have one of three scenarios. Either:
A) you destroyed all synthetics, now all synthetics aren't true intelligences and are carefully minded, resulting in very few quarians, if any, and almost no synthetics, and likely strife between the remaining races.
B ) you made everybody a hybrid, in which case there is sufficient peace that everyone is more-or-less working together on this experiment for the betterment of their people.
C) you chose to control. Humanity is currently the most powerful faction in the galaxy, but it came at the cost of the respect of the other races. As a result there is a constant cold war between the forces of the human government, and you are operating as a secret independent coalition of the remaining races, dedicated to attempting to bring peace.
All three of these are directly taken as possible impacts from the 3 main endings of the last one and all three of them are able to be easily mentioned in passing by altering the conversations going on in the background as you make your way to your ship. And all three of these would be adequate enough to allow them to say "previously on..." without being chained to those events, which they've already said they don't want.
If you read carefully you saw that i was referring to an experiment. The experiment I was referring to is an attempt to create a ship which is able to travel without the use of relays. The reason for this is that it makes the ship special, while also making it *completely* different from the Normandy. as it is an exploration ship, and not a warship. This is further supported by their recent emphasis on "exploration". The result of the ships launch is... in some ways better than expected. Not only is the ship able to travel without a relay, but it also manages to travel to an entirely new galaxy.
What this means moving forward isn't necessarily that the rest of this upcoming trilogy would take place in the other galaxy. Where the first trilogy was all about an impending event: The Reapers Are Coming! The new Trilogy would be one about the story evolving as it progresses, leaving it open ended. For instance, the first one could be about getting home, the second one could be about how much home has changed after in order to arrive home you basically opened a rift allowing superfast travel between the galaxies, where theyre both allowed to impact each other, and so on. Using this model the next couple mass effect games wouldn't even need to be a trilogy. They could be something more along the lines of an Elder Scrolls, or a Dragon Age, etc. where the story just evolves, moves forward with each installment.
