I looked at the video and pics of the early ideas for the new Mako and I think that BioWare is already repeating a mistake from the Shepard trilogy. Despite the Mako having a small but passionate group of fans, most players disliked the ground vehicle and appropriately was never forced on the player again after ME1. It's poor mobility, horrible physics, and the fact that attacking enemies by constantly exiting the Mako was preferable sealed it's fate. The Hammerhead was a drastic improvement in mobility but could be destroyed quickly by even small arms and was barely used in ME2. Cortez mentioning that Alliance techs were trying to fix the M-44's lack of armor/shields should have been allowed to happen and missions in ME3 could have had a vehicle with excellent mobility, adequate firepower, and armor. Alas, all we got were linear foot missions. A better option would be a vehicle with much faster acceleration/speed, mobility, and adequate armor like a hammerhead/mako hybrid would be way better than just another wheeled vehicle. I would think a 22nd century vehicle would use something a little more futuristic than just large wheels. Also, ME4 should be more than just planetside combat. I don't think it would be crazy if an N7 operative was also qualified as a fighter spacecraft pilot or at least some sort of armed troop transport with better firepower and maneuverability than a standard shuttle. Space combat was notably absent from the original trilogy and would be a pleasantly surprising addition to the new ME.

they have said they are basically working to make the Mako superior in every way when compared to the original

Lol, dude, as if they are going to directly copy the Mako from ME1.
duh that's why I mentioned seeing the concept for the new Mako. ![]()

So far that looks to be true except for the fact it's just a wheeled vehicle again. Looks too similar to the Halo Warthog(barf!).

I hope it's like the dune buggies in Borderlands 2. With micro-thrusters.

N7ArchAngel has a point though, they seem to be emphasising something that many players either weren't interested in or disliked. Even though it's being changed (And I have no doubt it's changing for the better), it seems like a waste of resources that could be better spent on other areas.
Though it could just be they're focusing on that since the game design is still very fluid at the moment and they don't have a lot of solids to show (They did say the design could change a lot).

ya everybody loved the mako, my favorite part of it was when you couldnt aim the gun turret at all and had to find terrain to line up the shot perfectly each time i mean it was fun and not frustrating or annoying at all....i totally understaand BW bringing it back. the next thing they should bring back are the texture popups i mean those were awesome as well.

Also have to consider what having the Mako back implies: planetary exploration. Traveling to the mission site and encountering stuff along the way. Car chases (maybe). Thresher maws (maybe). Vehicular combat (maybe).
I can't wait to see what the new environments look like when they're done. And how destructible they will be.

"Oh god! Please don't bring back a totally revamped version of an interesting idea that was poorly executed the first time you did it! If you do, I will hate it based on principle and not give it a fair chance."
Maybe that statement is a tad unfair, but everything in the first Mass Effect game was clunky as hell. The Mako may have been one of them, but it represented one of the game's most ambitious features -- planet exploration. The Hammerhead was another attempt that improved on the idea, but failed in its own aspect. They say that the third time's the charm, so why not give them a chance?
As for the wheel complaint, even in the 22nd Century, the wheel is still simple technology and it makes sense for use in exploring unknown planets. Hostile or volatile planets may be hazardous to complex and sensitive electronics used in certain tech. If hover tech fails, what then? You have a metal brick stuck in the mud that would likely require more complicated repairs. If a tire goes out? You can replace it with a spare tire or patch and reinflate the flat tire. That takes thirty minutes or less, which is a more ideal repair time on a hazardous planet.

Somebody never bothered to use the zoom function on the cannon. Should BioWare be blamed for your incompetence?

Actually that's how you sound to your parents when they tell you to take out the trash. I don't have a problem with wheels, just with the lone vehicle for planetside exploration. It's a poor way to scale steep mountains as the original mako showed.

Frostbite 3 engine will indeed make the same type of planet as we had in ME1.
My goodness.

I am mocking the sentiment that you expressed in your original post. I haven't been young for a while, if you must know.

Aerial vehicles may not be able to withstand various atmospheres or there may not be enough of one to create lift. Some planets have boiling hot or acidic oceans, so aquatic vehicles are also out. Terrestrial vehicles are commonly used because most planets have gravity. The reason why the Mako is the sole, planetary exploration vehicle is because it is the only one that's proven to work. Astronauts did not explore the moon in a VTOL, they explored it in a lunar rover. The Curiosity Rover isn't an aerial drone, it's rolling robot. Its simple technology that's proven to work and is the easiest to use for extended periods of times. Jets and thrusters require enormous amounts of fuel and/or energy. Whereas you can power motorized wheels with very little solar energy.
Just because it's the future, it doesn't mean the simplest forms of technologies stop being the most viable.

It sounds like they are going to make exploration with the Mako a big part of the game. While this could turn into the part the majority seemed to dislike about ME1 it could also be something that is fun if they do it right. We will just have to wait and see as more information is released.

You probably could have used only a simple argument rather than a childish mock which made you sound "young". Keep in mind that the astronauts who went to the moon did so in the 1970's not the late 22nd century. Plus, a wheeled vehicle isn't necessarily a good or even viable form of transport for every terrain which again the Mako proved. Besides, why does the new Mako have to be only one or the other? It could be a hybrid of the two.

I would be happy if the new Mako drove the same as the old one. Overcoming rough terrain was an accomplishment that satisfied me every time. I like to drive around the whole map rather than follow preset paths in a flimsy hovercraft. It was much better than the planet scanning.

A rover just looks cooler than some sort of hovercraft. I want to see alien dust, ice, or plant-analogues being kicked up by those treads.

A ground vehicle is also from game-design PoV better for exploration than an aircraft.
With an aircraft you have to build a huge (depending on achievable altitude and velocity) area for an level, limiting the actual detail in this area (apart from certain predefined points of interest, which then may also be the only points where you can get out of the vehicle).
A ground vehicle doesn't have a different altitude, the speed is also rather limited, so the designers are 'forced' to bring the detail of the surrounding to a 'similar' level as you would experience in an on-foot-level.
This is actually beneficial for an exploration setting.
Personally I found the Hammerhead to be a step in the wrong direction in pretty much all regards, aside from mobility.
The ME1 MAKO was not perfect, the new Mako (or whatever it will be called in the end) will likely also not be perfect.
But being able to drive around again, and actually explore a bit of your surrounding instead of <walk 10m, shoot something, repeat> is great news imo.
To OP: Have you seen the video from the panel?
1.) The devs said that they want to make the new MAKO as responsive as possible (!)
2.) Judging from the applause when the slide came up, most/a large fraction of the fans (or at least those at the panel) actually appreciate the (come-back of the) MAKO
