While there already exists a thread plaintively requesting the BioWare team abort the reintroduction of the Mako, it seems to me the decision has already been made.  What we know so far from "Charting A Course:  Developing the Next Mass Effect" at SDCC 2014 is that while we are years from the next game [00:54] (contrary to a link on Futureshop's website erroneously dubbing the game "Mass Effect 4" with an estimated release of December 31st, 2014), the Mako will be "fundamental" [08:41] and that its present incarnation is:

  • not the Mako you remember [05:53] (thank the Goddess!)
  • "really agile" [06:13] (with the goal being improved responsiveness)
  • there's no canon on it [06:16] (read:  when facing hostiles, drive away or exit the vehicle)
  • maybe it can hover, maybe it can jump [06:20] (I say, why not both?)
  • potentially customizable [18:08] (I would prefer changes that are not purely cosmetic because why the Alliance would choose to allocate resources towards making vehicles pretty is beyond me.  Let me put a gun on it or an omni drill or both.)

I, personally, would like to hear more banter when inside the vehicle.  One of many reasons I hated the Hammerhead was how lonely it felt.

Also, although traditionally not seen when playing third-person, I'd like to be able to shift my view from the exterior to the interior of the vehicle.  The designers have taken the time to show how people would fit inside the conceptual prototype [07:14] and it would be cool to see what our hero sees, limited view and all.  Oh, and I want to be able to blast the Club Kicks dance mix of "Bang Bang Boom".

It's your Mako.  What do you want to see?

I don't want wheels. I don't like hearing them.

I'd honestly prefer to have an armored skycar, or as close to that as possible.

I think I'd like it to be a bit slower than it was in the video they showed at the panel. Although I think a dev said something about no longer driving and having nothing to do but look at the sky, I'd just want to say that I loved that! I mean, at some point it could get tedious, sure, especially if you looked for metals, but on most playthroughs I just go to points of interest on a planet and I like being able to enjoy the view :) I don't want to be able to drive from one side of an area to the other in 60 seconds.

There must be a balance between the Mako being too fast (resulting in the worlds feeling small) and too slow (exploration becoming a snoozefest). At the moment I feel the Mako's current speed is tipping too heavily towards the former.

Something I enjoyed in ME1 when driving across flat terrain was using the thrusters while driving to tip the Mako forward so that a long burst would send it flying forwards for a brief moment :P between that and gazing at the firmaments of alien worlds, the speed of the original Mako never bothered me. I hope it remains true for the new one.

Oh yes, agreed! I'd especially love to hear a squadmember cry out in alarm when I drive particularly crazy :P or just any kind of comment about one's driving. Or anything, really.

I think the key will be the customization, after all they called it your mako and implied there is going to be customization of it. So I think we will be able to turn it into either an agile, fast groundcar or a more armoured and probably armed apc.

I want wheels. That way I can see some next-gen tire tracks in the snow/sand/enemy blood that I ran over.

I missed the Mako when it was gone, despite the controls not being the best.  I got used to them and they weren't THAT bad, but they weren't great, but even so, I still missed it when it was gone.  It was like another squadmate in a way.

Personally, I'm glad it's making a return, but I don't like the design.  I very much would have preferred it if the original design had been retained, just updated graphically and with tight, intuitive controls.

I thought the original design was iconic and functional and just very well done overall.  The new one looks like plastic, like a toy.

And seriously, why the **** does it have no turret?  Does anyone actually believe the Alliance, or any other entity for that matter, would go out 'exploring' and just assume they'll never encounter any hostiles?  Why be prepared for anything when you could just NOT be prepared and hope for the best instead?  That's a fantastic motto, right?  And surely one the military would adopt in a heartbeat.

And speaking from a lore perspective, realistically, by the time ME3 happens, the MAKO couldn't have been in service that long.  It was preceded by the M29 Grizzly, which was in service for 30 years, which means that the Mako hasn't even been in service for more than a few years by the time ME1 starts.  In reality, military vehicles of all kinds do inevitably get mothballed in favor of a newer, ideally better (but not always), replacement, but realistically most vehicles stay in service for a good length of time before that happens.  Just look at the M1 Abrams as an example.  It's been in service since 1980 with no end to its service in sight.

I'm sure they simply wanted an excuse to redesign the Mako and that's the long and short of the reason, but I don't like it.  I don't like the reason, and I don't like the new version.

On a sidenote, I don't like the new armor either.  It doesn't look or feel like Mass Effect at all.  If you did nothing at all to it other than take the N7 off, you'd guess it was from the new HALO or Destiny before you'd think Mass Effect.

Just my opinion.

Well first of all we dont know how long after ME3 it is. It could be that its 50-100 years into the future. And as I said before what we are seeing might be the base variant, simply an APC. We might be able to modify it to be anything.

But tanks like M1 are not really a good example, after all while it is stated to stay in service until 2040, in all this time it has been upgraded and will be again. Plus any country with large amount of tanks cannot upgrade them fast because that would mean throwing away the previous ones. Look at countries with smaller amounts of tanks, for example Japan is already on their way to replace their Type 90 which started producing in 1989. They have only 300+ tanks so replacing the whole amount is not as huge as 8000 M1's owned by US.

Anyway I digress. We dont know much about it to make any kind of conclusions. It could have a gun later. This version might be only a display variant, to test how it drives and show it to us.

The only issue I have with it at the moment is calling it the "Mako". That was the name of a specific IFV, not a general name for a wheeled rover. It would be like calling all future armoured vehicles a "Bradley".

Other than that the design looks really cool, I hope it's possible to switch it from purple though, don't really like that colour scheme.

I am pretty excited to see the Mako returns.  It was a great idea that was poorly executed in the first game, so I am happy that Bioware gave it another chance.  I can't wait for Bioware to detail exactly how you can customize it.

Honestly, Im really open and optimistic about the next game, but frankly,  i think the new design is terrible. As a matter of fact, i actually think the new art design/aesthetic is going in a wrong direction, looking more generic and goofy.

Hopefully they put a cannon on that thing.

Exploration is cool and all, but sometimes you just want to blow stuff up real good.

Not sure if Nerd Starks Head was just putting that as a joke answer, but that is really something I want to see happen. Allow it to have a radio with 4+ radio stations.

I say 4 because there are 4 that I for sure would want:

1. a News station where you hear news reports. Like the elevator transmissions in ME1, there are some that are directly impacted by you, but also include some random ones like political transmissions talking about how group X wants reparations for Y, etc.

2. a Lore station where you hear other less important reports talking about random things in the galaxy. For example, one report could mention that "due to contract disputes, Blasto's actor leaves the series", why not to play those Asari/Hanar porn games, why you should come to the Armax Arsenal Arena, etc

3. Mass Effect music that plays music that comes with the game. This music would be the tracks you could get in the arcade in the silversun strip and from other radios in the previous trilogy

4. a custom music station that plays mp3s that are on your PC/console's hard drive
