Your issue appears to be more on a functional and practicality basis. The truth of the matter is companions are more than just "holy trinity roles" in BioWare games. They all have their own personalities, interests, and provide different experiences in the story. If you've ever done multiple playthroughs with different characters, you'll notice how companions will act differently to situations and how those subtle changes can impact the story.
Personally I'd much rather DAI have more companions rather than only a few and BioWare adds another two as DLC. I find DLC companions, for one, never tend to be that compelling as they aren't fully realized. I also feel having too few companions in a game severely limits flexibility, options, and experiences. It's certainly more work for BioWare, but the entire point of game development is to always strive to make a better game than the last.
We'll have to see how this generation ultimately develops, but expect many RPGs to start getting a lot bigger in many ways, BioWare games included.
