I have diamond edition and decided to play a sorcerer but the blooming dummy will not destruct. Every time I cast a spell on it the report says "unharmed"  ??  Any expert sorcerers available with some kind words for a rookie?

What dummy?  You need to destroy the statue right next to the gnome wizard.

 

Also, install the 1.69 critical rebuild if you have not done so, even if GoG claims to be patched.

You fail to mention which Dummy in the pregame tutorial. 

 

The Combat dummy in the weapons combat training are only "defeated" by weapons. As a Sorcerer have patience. It may take you some time - this part is more geared to Fighters, Rangers, Monks, and Paladins.

 

The Magical Stone statue to be destroyed in the Arcane tutorial room requires a hit with i.e. Magic Missile. There is a scroll in a chest near you if you failed to select that spell upon character creation. Save the Melf's Acid Arrow to sell...

Magic is NOT required. Any damage spell will work. like Ray of Frost.
