So I had a contraversial idea about giving Shepard a first name here:

http://forum.bioware...tagonists-name/

But instead of forcing it on everyone, why not give it to only players who play the default Shepard/Protagonist as a bonus? Default players should get the full immersion experience.

- Loyal and close squadmates should call the player by the character's first name (John or Jane)

- Add in some dialogue concerning the character's appearance (hair, eye color, etc.) from love interests

- (May be a bit excessive) Default (John/Jane Shepard) Editions of the novels and graphic novels where characters can refer to the Protagonist by firstor full name (Commander John/Jane Shepard) and Graphic novels will fully show the protagonist instead of hiding him/her in the shadows.

Is this fair for custom players?

People have to make sacrifices to experience immersion in the Mass Effect games. Players who customized their Shepards may actually feel like they're actually in the game, but sacrificing any reference to their first name, and feeling like a shadow or ghost when reading the novels or comics. Players who play as John or Jane Shepard don't create a copy of themselves in the game(unless that player is Sheploo or whoever Jane was modeled from). So why not give John/Jane players the feeling that they're playing an actual character that feels alive, with a first and last name, a sense of style concerning their appearance, and a character who doesn't hide in the shadows in the graphic novels?

The downside to this is more voice work and edits from Bioware. The different editions for the novels and comics may seem excessive, and Bioware had already put a ton of voiced dialogue in the game, but I believe Bioware can put in a little more work to fully immerse the players who wish to simply play as the default protagonist.

One of the things that made the Mass Effect games really stand out from other games is the dialogue given for every decision the player makes in the game. But there's one decision that Bioware didn't account for, and it's the one made before playing the games: Playing default Commander John/Jane Shepard

I can get behind this. Doesn't bother me either way but there's going to be that crowd that doesn't accept or understand the concept of a placeholder.

Shepards story is done. They have said it multiple times. They are not going back to Shepard. Add in the whole controversy over the endings, and the eventual backlash if they do what you want and they are not going to touch the issue even with a hundred foot pole.

The comics and graphical novels that might come out will most probably only going to deal with either the squaddies or some other characters. The whole issue of comics and other stuff out of the games is to enrich the universe.
