I was wondering with the lack of healing abilities, how will this affect our ability to play as a support mage in DA:I ?

I mean support mages in DA means healing, buffing, using glyphs, using wards, using aura like death syphon or death magic, using weapon magic (flaming weapons, telekinetic weapons) and using hexes.

In DA:O to be a good support mage you would take spirit healer spec, focus on creation spells, some spirit and some entropy.

In DA2 to be a good support mage you would take creation, arcane, spirit healer and perhaps some entropy.

Since we know there will be little to no healing spells available in DA:I, I hope Bioware gives mages other support options spells.

For example spells that redirect threat / aggro, spells that give damage reduction, drain spells (we had drain life and drain mana) would be nice to compensate for the lack of healing spells.

Thoughts and comments ?

There will be other methods of support, such as crowd control--remember those giant flaming walls and ice walls? The rogue mages and I think Dorian were using glyphs, so those would be there for battlefield control as well.

It's possible that since healing has been nixed, mages' focus for support may have gone more towards crowd control and damage mitigation instead.

Also, mages are the ones that cast Haste.

DA 2 had only 1 heal spell. If you wanted more, you had to specialize in Spirit Healer. DA:I probably has literally 1 heal spell and there's no Spirit Healer this time. I'd call that "little to no healing".

Overall support-wise though(all the types you're talking about), I think we have plenty of spells.

Not to be a total buzzkill here, but the trees we've seen suggest limited full-support ability for mages. What we have seen is subject to change, naturally, but there was a fire tree, an ice tree, a lightning tree, and a catchall support ("Spirit") tree. There is some utility to the three elemental trees, including walls of fire that block paths and trap glyphs that explode and launch enemies into the air, lighting them on fire in the process (because nothing says you mean business like burning the bodies). The lightning tree has Haste as its Focus ability, fire has Firestorm, ice has what appears to be either Cone of Cold or Blizzard, and Spirit has the only spot for a heal. From what we've seen, Specs do not appear to have Focus abilities, but that's largely a guess on my part.

Support mages have never been optimal in dragon age in my opinion. Which is a shame. If you play DPS with a few support talents, with 2 mages you can pick all the interesting ones and with 3 even repeat some of them.

I wish that weren't the case, but I don't see it changing. The general mentality is thay DPS and big numbers is what is fun.

I thought they said they said we had the ability to be supporters. And if you look in the demo they show some specializations very swiftly but I saw something that looked like a healing tree.

Hey,

While I do like some support abilities (and crowd controll), a pure support would probably bore me (I would delegate the task to a companion ^^)

Still, I am all for having the option (as I can then play a mixed-character again...DPS/CC-Mix...with a few "oh ****" heal-abilities thrown into the mix)

greetings LAX

ps: the main-healer is never gonna be me (I am not the healer type...I can do the job (played World of Warcraft as a raid-healer for some time...reverted to tanking and damage because that's more to my liking...I'd rather watch the enemies and the boss, then HP-Bars), but my heart's no in it and if I really want to/need to heal: I will just take over the healer-companion :)
