The primary focus in the ME series was the Reapers. In the DA series, we have the Blight, Qunari, Mage vs. Templar conflict, and the internal struggles between political leaders, among other threats. While there is a connection between the games, it's mostly superficial... what we see is a cause and effect chain that connects the games, but the overall storylines do not have a central antagonist or overarching theme.
The return of various supporting cast members simply reinforces our connection to Thedas itself, as many of them represent high profile groups like the Chantry or Templars.
Superficial? i wouldn't say that not with such spam with old characters (especially flemeth , morrigan ,anders and some others) for example mage-templar war that we deal in inq is continued , grey wardens plot from daa and dragon age 2 probably corypheus is also in that , flemeth and morrigan plot is continued as in previous games ,and then put into that OGB plot as they said it will have some importance in dai.Pretty much dragon age as far continues a lot same themes and same characters stories (a lot of them). In the end it is pretty much Blight leads hawke to kirkwall what starts entire da 2 then hawke starts/leads to mage templar war and that starts dai.So i would argue that are separate stories i would rather say they are continuation from previous games or books/another products.
