Companion non-romance content

It's all about romances in the news. Like this. Anything about being friends?

Dorian looks like a funny guy. Can we be bros? Equally importantly, can we work together while NOT liking each other? What will the Iron Bull do if I tell him his religion is nuts?

I remember the complaints that unless you romance someone, you get locked out of companion content. Also the assurances that this would no longer be the case, the Morrigan friendship path mentioned as an example of the way forward. So non-romancers would get different content as opposed to less content.

Particularly interested because I almost never do a romance in these games.

It was said over Twitter some time ago that Dorian "stands to be a pretty awesome bro" or something similar by Mike Laidlaw, but I imagine Iron Bull will not be thrilled if you tell him his religion is nuts, regardless of whether or not you're romancing him.

Don't take twitter interactions as "news."

But yes, there's companion interactions.  I think the interaction issues lied more with the earlier Mass Effect games, however?  Sure you possibly get more content with someone if you romance them (because you'd probably still get some of the friend content), but even then I'd be surprised if there wasn't different different flavour depending on your relationship with the character.

I have no reservations stating that, by far, most of the interactions with your companions are not romance related.

As for disliking, I don't know the causes, but it is possible for companions to leave you.  So I imagine on some level if they don't like you in any capacity (or perhaps, feel disrespected by you), you run the risk of them saying "Peace out" and leaving the party.

Sounds promising.  I'm hoping for situations like the chats you could have with Garrus in ME2 when he wasn't busy with calibrations.  In fact, his entire friendship arc was great, and it fit nicely into his personal quest... I think that a situation like Jack is best avoided.  If I remember correctly, you couldn't even talk to her that much unless you wanted a romance (although her personal quest did re-open the door and provide at least a basic connection with Shepard).

Have you gotten a companion to leave you in a playthrough yet?

Thanks Allan. That's great to know.

It's a bit confusing because again and again David Gaider explains that romances are not the focus of the game, that they don't define characters, that they're extra content that can easily be ignored, that they're not as fundamental as fans make them to be. And yet gradually discovering the sexual orientations of the companions was such a big deal. Feels like a conflict of attitudes coming from different sections of the company and I don't know what to make of it.

I haven't even gotten to all the companions yet (I restarted my playthrough so I could go through the prologue properly as there were some issues with it the first night), so no.

I'm still pretty early in the game and only just started exploring the first larger "open world" type of levels that grant me a lot more avenues for exploration.

Sharing the representation of the characters is something we still wanted to do because, regardless of whether or not they are romanceable, I think it's still pretty noteworthy.  Even if the game had no romance stories at all, I'd still be up for including them and mentioning that they exist.

Some people, for instance, appreciate the fact that characters like Dorian and Sera exist from a perspective of outside of the game.  That they happen to be romanceable is the type of thing that does appeal to some gamers, specifically (for a variety of reasons).  But even in the marketing of our companions, we rarely actually touched on either their sexuality nor their romanceability.  There was GaymerX2 which did delve on the romances and sexual orientations more, but that's because it happens to be a conference that explores those topics.

I haven't seen make Bioware make a big deal out of romance content. Any content gets gradually mentioned instead of dumping it all on us at once.
