About the relays, how does it actually work and still travel from system to system via speed of light without losing time?

I can't remember what it is called, where time slows down in space is it? But on Earth probably a decade has passed.

Element zero a fictional substance can act as a conductor to electricity. When current is run though it that generates "Dark energy", channeling positive current creates dark energy that increases mass in a field, negative current decreases mass. I'm typing more its a long explanation.

The relays use this effect to create a tunnel of sorts between each other that essentially makes anything inside it Mass free so it doesn't weigh anything. At that point any kind of propulsion no matter how small sends the ship hurtling through the mass free tunnel to the next relay. Still more to come.

That is essentially how they work.

There are two different types of relays. Primary and secondary, primary relays exist in pairs, they can only send you to each other but they are usually massive distances apart. Secondary relays link to many other relays but don't send you quite as far as primaries. If you're familiar with networking its similar to a star topology with many central nodes.

Here is a link were I got the above:http://masseffect.an...ect_relays_work

Idk about the time thing though :/

So how come when somebody uses a mass relay, there is no time dilation on home worlds? Literally seconds have passed and that's about it? There is a book about a war, every time they come back from war on another planet, earth has under gone a rapid change so every time they come back to Earth, its always different.

This just makes want to see a hard(er) sci-fi interpretation of the ME universe.

There are various ways around the speed of light time issue. It sounds like in the ME universe they are using a loophole through Dark Matter which probably has some sort of isolation from normal space time.
