Human mage being in Kirkwall's circle would be tricky though. How did she/he survive and has she/he been run ever since? Also her/his relationship with Cullen would be tricky especially romance-wise.

Technically, all they said was that a mage human inquisitor, would have been sent to the circle for training, we dont know which circle they may have gone to, and since magic can appear very early for some its possible the mage wouldn't have known about their family status by the time they left it, and some apprentices dont stay in the circle they are first delivered to. Sometimes a circle may need new blood and a exchange is done.

I don't think so. Mostly because it's already been stated that the default world state is that of one that has no loose ends so as to ease new players into it who wouldn't know or care about any dangling plot points from the previous games. If this is the case, then if the human Inquisitor was from Kirkwall, and you played as a mage, wouldn't that be a loose end in itself? Especially since they've confirmed that the human mage was sent to the Circle as well. So you'd get questions like, "You were in the Circle in Kirkwall? By the Maker! How did you survive/how awful/what was it like/how did you get out/ect." And then you know, there's Cullen, who was Knight-Captain there, so say the human mage was in the Gallows, then even if the Circle was populated enough so that he wouldn't necessarily know your PC, your PC would know him. And new players wouldn't really have any reason to care about him at that point because they don't know him.

Plus there are tons of cities in the Free Marches, why not take the chance to let us explore them in some way? Even if it's only through our character backgrounds.

Although I mean, the human mage could still be from Kirkwall but was sent to another Circle, I suppose. But honestly, again, the Free Marches are huge. We've gotten to see a lot of Kirkwall, and some of Starkhaven. Tantervale is apparently the next biggest and powerful city after those two, not to mention the other cities within the Free Marches. My gut tells me that they'd want to distance themselves away from Kirkwall a little bit.

If we were to cross Hawke again, I wonder what his reaction would be?

To be honest, whilst the ruler at the top of the hierarchy may differ from one city state to another and the focus of the economy, essentially the nobility in southern Thedas are pretty similar.    They tend to think of themselves as noble by providence of the Maker rather than by chance of birth.    Hawke needed to money to buy back their estate but having done so it was an easy enough transition back into the ranks of nobility.   Even Duke Prosper, a snooty Orlesian who tends to look down on the "dog lords" of Ferelden, was welcoming to an offspring of Leandra, a noble family from Kirkwall.    Nobles rarely give much thought to people outside of their ranks and frequently think that they can treat them as they like because of their low status.

Some nobles are more devout than others and thus more inclined to play by Chantry rules concerning mages.    Others either keep their offspring hidden or use their wealth and status to ensure they have a smooth passage within the Circle.    The mage children of nobles are able to keep contact with their parents and this in itself ensures they have better treatment than those of commoners.   We didn't get such a sense of this in DAO but throughout DA2 and MoA there are instances and references that highlight the difference (and in Asunder).   For a noble, it seemed to me, the only downside of being a mage was that your couldn't inherit or take up a seat of secular power.   If Hawke was a mage and sided with the Templars even that rule appeared to have been overlooked, at least until the Seekers got their act together.

I'm not sure how much amnesia we suffer at the beginning.   If it extends to more than just how we got our glowing hand then may be it doesn't matter exactly where we originate.    They do seem to have deliberately chosen origins for the races that have not previously had much detail about the culture where they are from:

  • Human - noble from Freemarches (probably not Kirkwall) so not directly involved in previous events
  • Elf - Dalish - whilst we know a bit about their culture, they are isolationists so would not know much about events in the wider world that did not impact on them.   I think this is why we can't be a city elf, because they would have heard about the events in Halamshiral.   The majority of the only clan that was aware of events in Masked Empire was wiped out.    The only survivor may still be searching for another clan.
  • Dwarf - surface dweller so detached from the culture of Orzammar and more likely to have adopted that of wherever country they were located in.
  • Qunari - really qunari because they are Vashoth (Grey One) and have never lived in the Qun so no requirement to know anything of it.   Same comment as for the dwarf.

So with the exception of the Dalish it is very much a blank canvas.    Of course I could be proved wrong and we will suddenly be given a complete family history for our Inquisitor depending on their race, but if that is the case I hope that is sooner rather than later so I can make appropriate adjustments to the potted biographies I have been writing for my PCs.

How to play a human from kirkwall,

"Be a whiny stuck-up ******, even when you have no money and live in dark town... and if you do have money do the same thing but with better clothes and smelly perfume, to hide your natural stink."

All the humans we saw who were actually from Kirkwall were psychos, corrupt officials, criminals. I can't think of one that wasn't... well thats not true, i suppose most of the guardsman weren't so bad, but that's largely because after Aveline took over she cut the bad ones. Donnic was one of the few decent people we meet in Kirkwall.

It's no wonder Arishok wanted to kill it with fire.
