I'm sorry if this thread already been done but I just want to give my opinions about what they showcased. I think this whole "exploration" thing is really stupid. They said that the armor they showed us wasn't full battle armor, and I'm just hoping that they're not going to make the whole game with that kind of mindset, because I didn't fall in love with mass effect and it's universe just for some exploration. I want it to be just as action packed as all the other stuff, and have this exploration be optional. I'm also disappointed by the main character being n7. It REALLY limits some choices that we could've had to make our characters our own. I'm just hoping that these things end up okay and this next game won't be a total bust.

A couple things need to be addressed here:

"Exploration," in some way, shape, or form, has always been an integral part of of Mass Effect. Whether we look at the Mako in ME1, exploring the galaxy in the Normandy in all of the games, the various worlds we go to and discover, to not like exploration is somewhat perplexing to me.

BioWare stated that the protagonist is somehow affiliated with the N7 Program. They never stated that the protagonist was actually an N7 operative, like Shepard. Lets not jump into the deep end yet without further clarification and more details from BioWare.

Obviously people have expectations and there are particular directions they'd like to see Mass Effect take going forward. The best advice I can give is be patient, be open-minded, and wait to judge until you see BioWare's actual vision for the game come to fruition.

Call me stupid but I love space exploration even if it isn't in my mass effect game.  What's interesting about every new iteration of bioware games is that I come to realize that there is no way that bioware can create a game that all their fans will be satisfied with.

Mass Effect has always been about exploration to some extent. Even Shepard doing stuff in ME3 for the war had occurrences where he's really just exploring something a little more off the rails in order to pursue some kind of lead that could help in the war.

I don't love vehicle stuff in my games but if it doesn't annoy me then I'm all for it. Same with spaceship stuff.

Revan said it all really.

I agree with what you said, and I probably should've been more clear. I'm fine with exploration and all, but I just don't want it to take away from the core experience and feel of the game. Mass effect 1, for example, was fine by me in terms of exploration. There were maybe two story missions that has you going out and searching planets for stuff, and that's fine by me, but what I don't want is for this new mass effect to be completely about exploring and have most of the main missions be just that. It can have as many side missions with that and I'll be fine with it, but I just want the story driven adventure that I loved so much in the past games.

Okay, good clarification :)

I don't think you'll end up hating it. They're making a faster Mako with easier terrain for a reason. While there may be an even greater emphasis on exploration (not just in game design, but IMO it will also be in major themes in the writing and visuals and more) then even ME1, I don't think Bioware wants to abandon the things they did improve on in ME2 and ME3.

Basically, don't expect the action-pieces to minimized; just maybe not at the forefront so much. For example, I don't think we'll be quickly shuttle-dropped into warring locations where giant Harvesters are roflexplosioning us. Instead, we may be back to Mako dropping but Evolved, yet with planets/locations that are still as filled-out as ME2 and ME3 ones were (and maybe more). I also think we may have more open combat environment, and things like that could end up being very fun, especially for snipers and biotic users.

I'd say that instead of looking at the UNC of ME1, try to combine that with the more deliberate detail that ME2 had, and the combat experiences of ME3. I don't think we'd see *many* utterly barren worlds with little in them, roaming around the emptiness :P. At this point, that would be a significant step back.

You need not worry then. Part of the reason BioWare keeps on overemphasizing "exploration" is because the Mass Effect franchise since Mass Effect 2 has been notoriously linear. When they use the term exploration, BioWare isn't stating that the next Mass Effect will be a complete exploration simulator and have little in common with the original trilogy. Expect more along the lines of Mass Effect 1, where instead of playing the probe game to scavenge planets for resources in ME2 and ME3, you are actually exploring the world in your Mako.

BioWare will obviously also raise the bar, with there being side missions to find as well as plenty of other activities more than likely going to be littered throughout various planets. Dragon Age Inquisition could be used as an example to show the large environments BioWare is creating, while keeping them densely populated with activities, and seeing as this is a BioWare game, story always comes first over everything else. I think a better term BioWare could use is they are trying to build an open world RPG with large environments, requiring the use of a vehicle for traversal.

And just because the focus of a single panel was exploration, it is not an indication that there isn't action.

I think it's great that the Mako & proper exploration is back. Missed that aspect in ME 2 & 3 (too much railroading in those two games).

The only bad things I remember about ME1's planetary exploration is lack of diversity and general emptiness (oh, and the slow & sometimes hard to handle old version of the Mako), but BioWare won't make those mistakes again.
