Was there a change in the parameters for the Final Mission?

I've played ME 2 many times, and with the exception of the first game, I have ALWAYS come back from the final mission with no casualties. I was playing a new character today and was SHOCKED to lose three squadmates on the final mission.

I had my usual high Paragon score, I had everyone loyal, took all the improvements to the weapons armor and ship, used the people I always use to do certain tasks (because they've always survived before and BAM! Dead squadmates all over the place.

I noticed that the plug-in for ME 3 forced you to lose squad mates, so I wondered if there was a title update to the regular game that changed this or if I just hit the double zero on the roulette wheel of survival for this go-round.

Please advise!

Could you describe who did what and who died? I know of no updates that would change anything.

Yes.

List all the squad mates you recruited, whether or not they were loyal, and then list what you did on the SM for the following:

Infiltration

-Tech Expert

-Fire Team Leader

-Shepard's Squad

The Long Walk (aka Biotic Field Battle)

-Biotic Expert

-Fire Team Leader

-Shepard's Squad

-Escort for Crew

Hold the Line

-Shepard's Squad

Then tell us who you lost, and where exactly they died.

you probably picked different (wrong) "experts" for each role in the end.

Yah, please describe what happened...

Maybe you selected the Wrong guy? Like, you could imagine that Zaeed would be a Good Fireteam Leader. Yah, right...

Okay

I had all squadmates, everyone was loyal.

I chose Legion as the tech expert (he has ALWAYS survived in the past - he "died' this time)

I chose Zaeed to lead the second team (HE died) he's never died on me before (this was different, I usually have Garrus lead the team)

And Tali died fighting the rear guard action (she's never died before)

I always use Samara to hold the shield for us.

I always send Mordrin back with the injured crew.

I have all my upgrades for the ship

I have so much extra ore it's not funny

And my level was as high as it has ever been.

I have always sent Legion into the "pipes" he's always survived - that's the one that really threw me.

Again, I have played this game all the way through with probably 15 characters of all different from all different classes, and with the exception of the first game where I didn't know what I was doing, I have never lost a squadmate before.

Sorry for the delay in responding.

So, looking at the answers above, maybe Zaeed was a bad choice, but I don't understand how that got Legion killed at the door. He's always survived the door before.

In a way it's kind of cool because I get to play ME 3 without both Legion and Tally. Got to wonder what THAT quest is going to look like!

The only good fire team leaders are Garrus, Miranda or Jacob or the techie/team leader is toast.

And as I recall, Tali is the first one (if you send Mordin for escort) holding the line to die if you don't meet the math.

And as I recall, Tali is the first one (if you send Mordin for escort) holding the line to die if you don't meet the math.

Basically this.

First off, appropriate tech specialists are Tali, Legion and Kasumi.  They need to be loyal to live.  Also the Fire Team leader must be Garrus, Miranda or Jacob, and they have to be loyal or else the tech specialist dies.  Zaeed is not an appropriate fire team leader because he is a lone merc, (for all the bitching about Miranda, she is an effective leader via her track record).

For the Long Walk, it is a little bit more interesting.  Supposedly Miranda as Fire Team leader does not even need to be loyal to survive it.  Jacob or Garrus need to be loyal.  Any other Fire Team leader will die.

Escort is just a Yes / No and then loyalty check.  So loyal escort (whomever) will result in crew and escort living.

The Hold the Line math is a little complicated, but the gist of it is that some characters are worth more than others, and loyalty means the character has an extra point. So just refer to:

Because Zaeed wasn't a good enough leader to provide defensive fire for Legion.

Also, did you something like take Grunt and Garrus (or Zaeed) to the final battle?  Those are your hold the line experts who you want to leave behind.

. Yes , welcome to masseffect. Expect the unexpected. Last week i had a loyal Tali and a loyal Kasumi dead. And Grunt taking away by the swarm. I had also some not-loyal sqaudmembers. So Tali and Kasumi dead was a big surprise for me because i needed them for the end fight against the human reaper. I expected some other non-loyal squadmember being killed.

Tali and Kasumi are extremely useless for the Human Reaper fight, wtf.

I chose Legion as the tech expert (he has ALWAYS survived in the past - he "died' this time)

Miranda, Jacob and Garrus are the only ones that can be fireteam leader, as well as being loyal, for Tali, Kasumi and Legion to survive the vent who also have to be loyal

I chose Zaeed to lead the second team (HE died) he's never died on me before (this was different, I usually have Garrus lead the team)

The only ones who will survive being 2nd fireteam leader are Jacob, Garrus and Miranda. Garrus and Jacob have to be loyal whereas Miranda doesn't have to be loyal to survive

And Tali died fighting the rear guard action (she's never died before)

Tali, Jack, Mordin and Kasumi are the weakest characters.

Who did you take to fight the human reaper? Usually what you want to do is take the weakest characters to fight the reaper leaving the strongest to hold the line.

I've done the suicide mission numerous times giving me all kinds of outcomes based on what I did.

Last suicide mission I sent Grunt back to the Normandy with the crew and took Zaeed with me to battle the baby Reaper.

That was a mistake as I soon found out, as that only left Garrus with a 4 ranking defending the rear. Mordin died. (which turned out to be great btw)

My thanks to everyone who responded to my query! I learned a lot about the final mission. My big change was not putting Garrus in charge of the other team. I always go in with everyone loyal, all ship upgrades installed, etc. I usually have Garrus lead the other team, Legion go into the vents, Samara provide the barrier, and Garrus lead the rear guard as we fight the reaper. I've taken different people in to fight the reaper with me, but usually Miranda goes with me and someone like Thane or Grunt.

Didn't know that making that one change would really affect the game.  What fun! Makes me want to go back and try all different combinations to see who dies and who doesn't.

Again, thanks to everyone.

Well, you can use Kasumi for Harbinger control, so she is not totally useless. I often bring Kasumi on Collector missions for her Harbinger controlling ability. Here she is doing a credible job during the vents and bubble section of the SM. (Except for one point where she delayed throwing her flashbang until Harby was already gone.)

Squadmates are quite useless there, as I recall. Cain for the win :P

That's not true. Biotic squadmates can be used to take down the reaper baby quite effectively. And if I tried the Cain I would just miss the thing because it hops around so much. Here is Miri finishing off the reaper baby with a Warp.

I guess I'm lucky with it :D Mordin's Incinerate is also good against armor but in my experience, about 95% of the damage is done by myself :)

All your choices-wrong!!1

Tech  is Tali or Kasumi.

Second team Jacob or Miri

Biotic is Jack.

Mordin escort.

Final run-Garrus and Miri with me cuz of warp and overload.

Leave the rest to defend.

I've never done that. Tried using my squadmates powers on the baby reaper. I always used the cain and shot at its eyes. Thanks for the video. When I get to the suicide mission on my current trilogy run, I will do this.

Actually Legion as a tech expert, Garrus as a second team leader and Samara as a biotic got me through the SM without casualties. Mordin was sent with the crew, Jack and Tali faced the human reaper.

No wonder you do 95% of the damage: your squad mates have no projectile powers at all.
