I'm concerned that the combat looks to flashy.  Watching the demo made me think of a hack and slash type of game like bayonetta with all the colours and sparkles.  I can understand it from a mage but i just hope a warrior class doesn't leave a bright green arc as he swings his sword.

Also is the killing blow moves making a come back?

There's been game play with warriors. They kept switching between the companions in game play. I don't remember thinking they look too flashy. I like how the combat looks overall.

I expect some of this will be able to be restricted in Settings and FX options; used in demos for show.

Button mashing goes hand in hand with flashy and sparkly. Apparently there seems to be a idea in the biz that combat needs to be over the top and flashy and enemies need to be huge and colourful to keep people interested in the game.

I found some of it to be a little over the top but I can live with it. It still looks allot more fun that DA2.

I do hope we can turn down the vfx. I much prefer gritty, realistic looking combat to flashy vfx and over the top animations.

I like flashy . . . up until the point where my entire screen is so covered with flaring neon colors that I can't tell what the **** is going on.  Then I don't like it any more.

BUT I haven't seen any videos yet where this is the case.  Yay!

To flashy or not to flashy, that is the question...

In all seriousness, I don't think it's that bad. It looks like they've dialed it back a notch from DA2. I don't really care much either way if it's flashy or understated, though I do think DA2 overdid it a bit.

It looks like DA2 just a bit slower to me. But a lot more Balanced than origions

There's no indication that there will be any button mashing in DA:I.

I don't think it'll be too flashy, at least not as much as DA2. Though I suspect there is some bending of reality as I remember seeing the warrior's greatsword create a crater when he hit the ground.

Also, as much as I would love to see the nice coup de grace decapitations return from DA:O I don't believe they will given the control allowed to the player.

I've played Bayonetta.... The combat for this game isn't NEARLY as flashy as Bayonetta lmfao.

I need a dislike button for this. What gets characterized as "realistic" in games is usually no better than the flashy stuff. The insanely slow attack speed of two-handed weapons in DA:O was absolutely egregious; using a weapon that slow would get you killed 5 times over between each swing.

Just uh, take the time to watch and compare. This is also one of the very first fights (if not the actual first) in the game, so it is super easy and basic in terms of looks and difficulty in comparison to later on.

I don't mind too much if the combat is flashy, as long as the game is good and has very deep combat mechanics..... *ahem*

But yeah, I have to say that the game is visually unappealing. This also goes for the absolutely fugly DA2 icons (give us DA:O icons, thank you) and the somewhat unattractive art direction. Dragon's Dogma or the Witcher 3 look much, much, much better than DA:I in my opinion.

The posts in this thread again prove the point what one poster sees or believes another does not. The OP and others find the combat to be flashy while others in this thread do not. So Bioware has to try and thread the needle to try to answer the desires of each group. Nobody is going to get everything they want. There will always be compromise in any game.

Or that third group who has no real preference between them.

That doesn't go hand in hand with the games we see nowadays. Dark and gritty has become generic while colorful and flashy is rarer than ever.
