So I have an interesting question in regards to Mass Effect 4 (I'm sorry, Bioware, but I'm going to keep calling it that until you actually give us a title, regardless of how mad you get about it).

So far, all we really know is that we're going to be exploring previously uncharted parts of the Mass Effect universe. Some people believe this means we'll be hitting new sectors of space in the Milky Way (according to the Codex, only about one percent of the entire Milkyway has been explored), and others are of the inclination that we'll be hitting a new galaxy altogether, possibly to avoid the consequences of the ending.

Either way, we're going to be going to new places, that much is clear, but I want to know... how would the rest of you feel about playing a Mass Effect game where we never visit some of the iconic Mass Effect locations? Will it still feel like a Mass Effect game if we spend the entirety of it out on the frontier or in another galaxy and we never visited places like the Citadel or Tuchanka or the like?

How important are these locations and settings to you in relation to the overall Mass Effect experience?

I hope you get an answer, if only because it would confirm whether or not the game is set in a different part of the galaxy or universe.

While BioWare didn't explicitly say where the game is taking place, it didn't appear it would be a different galaxy. This is purely just speculation, but I would look at what BioWare is currently doing with Dragon Age Inquisition. In that game, they are building a lot of new areas never explored in Thedas. At the same time, they are also revisiting some iconic locations in Dragon Age: Origins, as Ferelden is one of the two countries you will travel across. I believe this philosophy will also be depicted in the next Mass Effect. Expect for most of the environments to be entirely new, but I'd also suspect we'll visit familiar locations, with the Citadel probably being the most likely.

^This, I expect that the next game will be mostly set in the uncharted region's of the galaxy but at the same time we'll revisit some of the iconic location's in the series as well even if its for a brief period of the game.

Going to another galaxy doesn't ignore the ending.

You'd still have green eyes if you chose synthesis.

You'd still have no geth if you chose Destroy, unless it's set so far into the future the geth either vanished or were recreated.

Surely there would be some shared location, just most probably viewed from different perspective.

By my opinion most probable are Citadel and Omega depending on part of galaxy where new ME would be situated.

Even if the game winds up in another galaxy, it doesn't mean we can't visit some familiar place(s) first before the exodus. Perhaps to recruit key people before heading out...

It could start out as a sidequel.

The Reapers are in the process of annihilating the galaxy, and the civilizations of the galaxy send an expedition to parts unknown to start a new civilization, in the event that the Reapers win.

That's just one possible route Bioware could go if it wanted to avoid dealing with the consequences of ME3's endings. That being said, I'd rather see proper sequel.

True, but I would count that as being part of the same setting as the Shepard trilogy. Mass Effect 2 introduced a new region of the galaxy as well (the Terminus Systems), but the Citadel remained a hub.

If Bioware confirmed that we would be visiting familiar locations (even if its just the Citadel) I wouldn't really consider that a new setting.

If Bioware is trying to make N7 an important thing in this game, then I feel like we can't be venturing that far out from Alliance space (i.e. a different galaxy). They're stressing on "new experiences" with things we already know and love, and I also feel that BW is pretty confident that we could see a few old faces, which makes the whole inter/intra-galactic exodus thing even less likely.

My most wanted revisits are Rannoch, Tuchanka, and Ilos. Earth would be nice too as a hub of sorts.

But how would they travel between galaxies when they need the relays to travel INSIDE their OWN galaxy?

Assuming it's after the trilogy, the Citadel is now over Earth, so... that's a thing.

Agreed, I find the idea of going to a new galaxy utterly absurd. The only way it would work is with a relay here and in this other galaxy, but it would take ages for us to get the sister relay into position. And when so much of our own galaxy is still unmapped...

The very last thing I would worry about is "how". It's a video game - they'll come up with whatever space magic is required to make it happen.

I am sure we will get to see the Citadel in some way shape or form.

I'd rather they don't take a dump on lore just to have an excuse to avoid dealing with the consequences of ME3's ending.

I'm not sure I understand your concern. If they decide that in ME Next you're going to travel to another galaxy they would just have to devise some new (or ancient) piece of technology that would allow it. The existing lore can remain as it is...

They wouldn't need to 'take a dump on the lore' in order to set the game in previously unexplored regions of either the Milky Way, or another galaxy. According to the lore fewer than 1% of the Milky Way is explored by the current civilizations of the galaxy. Most relays also lay dormant and lead to parts unknown. They could quite easily have one lead to another galaxy, should they decide to set the next game outside the Milky Way.

I've had a gutsful of the Citadel. we've seen plenty of Tuchanka already.

I wanna go back to Ilos. I'd like to see Palaven & Parnak (yagh homeworld) and the other species' homeworlds. Parnak would be awesome, exploring a virtually unknown planet with extremely hostile alien lifeforms (the yagh were quarantined to their homeworld after massacring the Council's first contact team).

Thing is, I think they really should allow us to visit the Citadel again. The Citadel was never done much justice throughout the trilogy and I feel the new engine and the new platform would really be a great opportunity to give us a much grander view of the station. In ME1, it was huge, but it felt empty and there wasn't that much to see. In ME2, it was terrible, since you were confined to just a few floors in some building in the Wards, and in ME3, while it was definitely quite a lot better than 2's, and better still for the Citadel DLC, didn't quite get there with the sense of scale either.

Soo want more Noveria with that music. Ovrrall I agree with people stating they should revisit some iconic locations. A mix between new and old would be ideal. Not sure about the Citadel though....shouldn't be destroyed? I would be happy even without too much of a connection with Shepard

The Citadel is only heavily damaged, and only and Destroy and Synthesis, but it's rebuilt anyhow.

A thousand times this.

Give me a fully developped Citadel.
