So I see a lot of ppl commenting they are wanting to play a Qunari (Kossith) throughout the game and I can't help, but wonder: Isn't it a Kossith and everyone is stating the wrong thing? Everywhere I look it states Qunari, but from what I understood that is a religion/idealism rather than a people as a whole. To me it wouldn't make sense if they had a Qunari be the Inquisitor, as the Inquisitor should follow the Chantry....Correct?

Maybe I'm wrong and if I am, I'm fine to say that. I'm just purely curious. :)

Not matter what, you'll always be called Qunari even if you're not part of the Qun. Best not to get into it to be honest.

That being said you'll be Tal'Vashoth/Vashoth, a Qunari that left the Qun or was never part of the Qun in the first place.

Kossith is an archaic term. No one in Thedas uses it.

There's:

Qunari (people of the Qun)

qunari (the race)

Viddathari (Thedosians who've converted to the Qun)

Vashoth ('Grey Ones' who have left the Qun or were never part of it)

and Tal-Vashoth ('True Grey Ones' that oppose the Qun)

The Inquisition is only loosely linked to the Chantry, being the Divine's (NOT the Chantry's) contingency plan. However, the Inquisition itself is NOT an Andrastian organization, as the developers have stated many times.

Kossith is the name of the culture that preceded the Qunari. Kossith is not the name of the race.

You will not be required to follow the Chantry, nor will you be required to follow the Qun if you are Qunari. It's just an applicable term.

Go ahead and call them kossith, if you want. It is one life's small pleasures. Call them that right now: "kossith." So good.

World of Thedas calls them the "kossith race" (page 127), so you have textual support if you really need it. (you don't) Don't fight with people about how they're wrong about calling them qunari; that would be insane.

That the Qunari and other Thedosians don't use the word much doesn't mean we can't. It would make sense for a character in a period game about Europe to call any Muslim from the Ottoman Empire a Turk, but that wouldn't mean forumites would be wrong not to.

Not to get into this argument, which I have 'til now successfully avoided, but your comparison is a bit flawed. The Turks and Muslim sub-groups self identify as something other than Turks (Arabs, or Persians or any of the other hundreds of groups), while Qunari never refer to themselves as Kossith. The word Kossith has never even appeared in-game. David Gaider has said many times that Kossith is just a term used by Historians and is no more applicable than 'Bunny-people'. So qunari don't self identify as Kossith, and thus forcing that title on them is actually the opposite of what you no doubt intended (to refers to them as they would themselves).

But anyway, if you really want to hear all sides of this argument do a thread search, there are about 9001 copies of this argument.

It's Qunari, unless you want to irritate David Gaider.

That's so stupid though.  You can't have a singular term that blankets both the race and the religion like that.  It's unnecessarily confusing.  Not to mention it's....kind of lazy in the lore writing department, if I do say so myself.

Not necessarily. Qunari don't really care about race distinction, so they don't distinguish their race by any sort of label. They're all about following the Qun, and nothing else really matters to them. That sort of explains why their race doesn't really have an "official" name.

It's not lazy writing. It fits with the beliefs of the Qun.

Edit: And it'd be extremely easy to just say "they're called Goatmen" and then work that into the lore. So it's not a matter of lazy writing

Damn....I'm afraid I must admit you make a very good point.  But then....shouldn't the other races have come up with a term for THEIR race by now?

It is Qunari. Bioware consistently calls the playable race Qunari so I see no reason to then call them Kossith instead.

I don't think so. The only obvious Qunari to them are the big horned people. Any other follower of the Qun would slip completely under the radar. I can imagine the Qun would encourage this. It makes the other nations easier to spy on.

It's actually brilliant writing. You have a culture that is so foreign they don't have a differing term for race or culture. The Qunari is expansionistic, so all will become part of the Qun (in their minds) so eventually all will be Qunari, and there is no distinction between races.

You mean elves dwarves and humans coming up with a name for the Qunari for them? Maybe, I mean that's a fair point. But I always took it as a sort of... confusion about the Qunari. You know, the Thedosians don't really understand them, so they don't really come up with a classification for them. I guess?

Qunari self-identify as Qunari or even their roles within the Qun (Sten, Vashoth (even though Vashoth isn't part of the Qun) etc.) I guess it's just easier for the rest of us to just role with it.

Jewish isn't a race though.

You should take a look at the majority of nations ethnic groups. Jews are almost universally classified as a separate cultural and racial group. The same as people of African descent. Most nations census list Jews on that exact level, so it actually is considered a race most everywhere. In the US we typically don't classify Jews the same way as the rest of the world, but we are one nation, while the rest of the world is... a lot more than 1.

Exactly. One would think the other races such as humans, elves and dwarves simply call them qunari. Races which are not qunari but follow the Qun probably get referred to as Qunari human, qunari elf or qunari dwarf. I really don't see any issues with the naming convention concerning the actual qunari race from a qunari point of view nor from the point of view from the other races.

I actually don't intend to respect their wishes or self-identification. I hate the Qunari like a five-year-old hates Gargamel. Which is not really fair on my part, or particularly attractive, but we all have our crosses to bear. I call them kossith (sometimes) particularly because it thrills me to stick it to this completely non-existent fantasy culture. (like I said, not attractive)

Dev statements are interesting, but they are, for me, trumped by what I actually see in officially published supplemental material or (much more importantly) the games. For example, David Gaider has said that Morrigan's not an atheist, but she makes what I would consider atheistic arguments with Leliana in a banter. So I think of Morrigan as an atheist.*

Sten states that Vashoth aren't qunari (with a lowercase "q" in subtitles) in a banter. I'm not sure we've seen a Vashoth identify as qunari, either. World of Thedas identifies them as the kossith several times in the section on the Qunari religion. Of Tal-Vashoth, it says "Most are kossith." (129) To me, that's more definitive than a dev statement. I understand others will have differing opinions.

But I will die on this hill. I will never stop occasionally calling them kossith. never

*but I will not get into protracted arguments about this with devs or forumites on the BSN. life's 2 short

Lol fair enough, from that point of view there isn't a reason not to call them kossith. Stick it to 'em ;)

I am not actually sure what he meant when he said that and I can't quite remember the contect. He could have been hinting at the fact that she believed in some sort of god or gods. He could have meant that it was impossible to be an atheist in Thedas because the old gods do exist but then are they actually what we would consider gods?  It also could just be a result of how he defines atheism. From what I remember Morrigan is not a gnostic atheist she just believes it is unreasonable to assume the maker exists just because the world exists. Some people only view gnostic atheists as atheists and consider agnostic atheists to be agnostic despite the fact that most atheists when pushed would admit to being agnostic atheists.

So it really depends what he meant by that tbh.

Technically they are not, they are vashoth but that's just how the Qunari see it. To the rest of Thedas they are qunari and while that might be because of ignorance it's still how they are viewed by most people, generally what something is known as is what something is called. If this was the real world there would be no lore or book that dictated what a certain group of organisms should be called.

I have no idea what went on with the WOT seeing as it is the writers who wrote that and they are the one's who made the point that Kossith was not the correct term.

A bunch of words.

Morrigan isn't atheist though. She believes in the Maker and Andraste; she just doesn't give to sh!ts about them.
