Mages and Lyrium

Snippet from the wiki
In its processed form, lyrium may be handled by anyone, but long term exposure or a single mistake while working with it can lead to serious side effects. Prolonged use becomes addictive, the cravings unbearable. The effects of lyrium addiction for templars include paranoia, obsession, and dementia.
Over time, templars grow disoriented, incapable of distinguishing memory from present, or dream from waking. They frequently become paranoid as their worst memories and nightmares haunt their waking hours. Mages have additionally been known to suffer physical mutation.

Mages can "Use" the Lyrium in a sense that they absorb energy from it but Templar either can't do it or its very slow.
In this case the Lyrium lingers and hence the side effects. Also mages get more severe side effects if they touch unrefined Lyrium but there has been no report of mage addiction to Lyrium.

Mages, and templars both also cannot go anywhere close to unprocessed lyrium. Only the dwarves with their resistance to it can do that. They have to process it before either the mages or the templars get it.
And the templars drink it, whereas the mages, more often than not, use it externally in their rituals.

Thanks, that explains why a mage would not exhibit the same side effects.
Templars do use it too although to a lesser degree to develop their talents. It's also known that the chantry uses it to control the Templars

What about the Tranquil? I remember the one in Ostagar briefly mentioning that he could "work" with lyrium, but could a Tranquil mine pure lyrium safely?

Lyrium is branded on their forehead, and they are cut off from all connection to the Fade, and this disconnect allows them to work with lyrium moreso than any other.
I suppose it's entirely possible that a tranquil could mine lyrium the same as the dwarves.

I believe that's processed lyrium, not raw lyrium, as the tranquil and the dwarves craft items from processed lyrium.

The dwarves also work with the raw lyrium and are the ones who process it before it even gets to the surface.
It may be possible if the tranquil went into the deep roads, they could accomplish what the dwarves themselves do, should the dwarves allow it.

I think their lack of a "natural resistance" to lyrium would still be an issue. The dwarves also seem to have become quite skilled at finding lyrium as it's noted, "Only a handful of Mining caste families hazard extracting the ore, finding veins in the Stone quite literally by ear. For in its raw form, lyrium sings, and the discerning can hear the sound even through solid rock."

Hm... I was speculating that it's the lack of a connection to the Fade that prevents a person from being harmed by lyrium, but if it only applies to processed lyrium, my theory just went out the window.
edit: had to reword that... >.>

Actually mages are harmed more by unprocessed Lyrium. But in return they are almost not harmed in any way by processed Lyrium so long as the exposure is not unnaturally long.

Indeed. Severe hemorrhaging.

I think we've established that. We're simply debating whether or not its possible if the tranquil, having been cut off from the Fade, may have an increased resistance to lyrium and the possibility that they may be able to do as the dwarves do.

Dagna's theory. Lyrium can be found in blood. Mages have a greater concentration of it therefore a higher tolerance than your average lyrium swilling templar.

They can enchant without harm like Dwarves. We know this much.
I am more interested in tranquil and their reaction to red Lyrium.

Umm....where is this? It's not the epilogue as she discusses lyrium vapors effecting mages.

That would be interesting. The possibility of it being horrifying are also pretty high, but it would be interesting to test their reaction nonetheless.

So would that mean that dwarves have an extremely high concentration of lyrium in their bloodstream?

The whole corrupted Lyrium thing is still a mystery to me.
There have been no mention of Lyrium getting corrupted by taint and all the Lyrium we find in the deep roads is "raw Lyrium". But there is corrupted Lyrium in the bone pit where dragons live, why is that?
btw there is no sign of taint and darkspawn in bone pit, just dragons. Dragon blood corrupts Lyrium?

Not necessarily. Dwarkin in Orzammar says he got some lyrium powder directly in his blood and hadn't been right since.
It's also a high possibility, and they simply can't handle it entering their bodies directly (No inhaling it, directly in the blood, and so on.)

Make's sense. Millienia near lyrium dust, sand, and mines could do that.
Edit:

It's possible, or it may simply be that there are two types of lyrium, and the red lyrium simply has more severe side effects, but more power built into it.
Meredith was leaping around like Kermit in Muppet Treasure Island and bringing statutes to life, something most templars cannot do, but she was also well around the bend.
