I could spend hours gushing about SPECIAL. It's just such a great approach to cRPG rulesets.
Bioware has been pretty terrible at implementing a good ruleset, as much as their NPCs have been solid and interesting.

I do like SPECIAL... but Int is invariably an overpowered stat. Skill points should be tied to more than intelligence - being able to aim a gun isn't made easier if you have a PhD, nor are you going to be a faster leaner at sneaking because you can calculate Pi to 20 decimal places in your head.

A system where skill points (or XP in general) are group-specific would be a much more realistic scenario, as would any stat bonuses to the gaining of these skills.

Didn't they say that rather than assign stats when leveling most of our stats would come from gear? Having dialogue options depend on your outfit seems pretty silly to me ...

I'm sure the idea made more sense back in early August when this thread was last active...

It would appear special dialogue options will become available by funding research projects for the advisors.

But shouldn't a mage already have arcane knowledge?

I don't mind having to spend points unlocking history or something but you shouldn't have to buy something your class should already know.
