What if the reapers arent from the distant past but rather the not so distant future? What if they were created by an organic species and rebelled against there creators much like the geth and then began erraticating there creators. So what if after destroing all sentient life they  were left with no purpose . We already know they created the mass relays and the citadel, so if they are capable of creating technology to travel thoughout the galaxy whos to say they cant travell though space and time itself ?what if they travelled through time to began there quest of organic destruction anew. What if all of this is a cycle of destruction that the species of the Mass Effect unvivers brought on themselfs, this is purley speculation

Hmm good point but surely if the repears had that technology they could travel and begin the cycle whenever they wanted.

That's an interesting theory that makes alot of since, but I hope it isn't true. Once time travel enters the picture way too many paradox's start popping up.

Dont mean to derail your thread but stay away. Since you are curious about the Reaper's i HIGHLY suggest you dont go to the general discussion's.

And i dont know. But it is said they have wiped out a species known as the Prothean's 50,000 years ago and they also have wiped out other species from the past. So they are much more older than 100,000yrs old.

Strong evidence in ME 1 suggests the reapers are AT LEAST 37 million years old.

They couldn't come back in time to prevent the organic species from doing something, then they'd have no reason to come back in time to stop them in the first place.

That is, unless they failed (which they obviously will, though that raises the question of why they weren't prepared, seeing as how they would have known how and why they would fail), or the organic species already did what the Reapers came back to stop, therefore making the whole charade pointless.

Also, traveling through time isn't quite as easy as traveling through space, even if you involve the Mass Relays and the Citadel.

[edit]
@Chaosapiant:
Well, if they came back from the future, they could come at any point in time, not to mention the fact that the age of their composing materials wouldn't suddenly revert just because they went back in time. So they'd be old from when they've been created plus the point when they came back in time.

I don't think they would be. The whole point of the Protheans and the Reapers is to give you a surreal feeling that we're not at the beginning of the Universe but very much later on in its life and development; having the reapers come from the future would be hugely counter-productive to that.

I believe they're either as old as Sovereign suggests or they're even older, possibly from the 'future' in a way: I believe they might be from a previous Universe.

Err, even if a previous universe would have existed with its core on the exact same spot as our one (not saying ours is the first or anything), the galaxies would be in radically different positions, forcing the Reapers to travel unimaginable distances to reach the edge of a galaxy, so there would be little point in using the Citadel to enter the galaxy if they could travel those distances.

Yeah I agree, this is dangerous being on the forums now - I tentatively skim read paragraphs in someones post lest the story be spoiled. :unsure:

Hmm if they could travel through time i would suggest they go all terminator and go back in time to kill a young Sheppard so he cannot stop their latest quest to rid the galaxy of organic life.

what if they are just guarding something from sentient life, something worse then themselves, maybe if it was stumbled upon, something even worse will apear, which is why the protheans were destroyed(unlikely hypothesis)
