Hell, I'd take that if they implemented it. For me, customisation can bring me closer to just about anything, whether it be my face, my armour, my ship, or my god damn toilet, it will feel more personal to me, easier to attach to, though the Normandy did a job finer than it could have possibly done otherwise without any customisation involved, although the suicide mission and the upgrades required to power through the venture through the Omega-4 Relay did bring me closer to the ship, I will admit.
Personal ship customization or even choice in selecting ships

It would be fun to have what you choose to be a part of your ship alter what you can do on missions. Not a linear upgrade but options. Some parts just need space but others have to fit in limited locations. mission might require the ship to have so much cargo room and an advanced radiation shield that might only allow smaller weapons for the ship. Obvious ship components and weapons could affect how effective different negotiation tactics work. Paragon could have a hard time convincing someone they don't want violence when they have a spinal weapon 2/3 the length of their ship. Renegade on the other hand would get a bonus.

If we get the ability to customize ships... I hereby request a research & development department allowing you to research old weapons to create new weapons & the same for all additional ship components.
For example I want to be able to research the parts from the ships in the Galactic Core + remnants of the Collectors & Reapers as well as say the cannon that killed the reaper we got the IFF from in #2

Depending on the story I like the idea of having some sort of space station. But I also think having your own ship to customize would be great, and that seems like it would suit the whole exploration and stuff that Bioware seem to be focusing on. It would be great if we could customize our crew a bit (I mean the crew members, not the squadmates) and choose who we can recruit onto the ship which can give it benefits. It would be great to have alien crew members as well.

I really like the idea of being able to personalise the new 'ship' and the new Mako. Change the colour scheme. Add upgrades. Maybe even have choice of being able to buy one of several different class of ships.

The issue with customization is that it's really not in the cards if the ship is a military vessel like the Normandy. You can adorn the cabin with certain things, but only within the confines of certain areas, like the model shelf, the fish, maybe some brick-a-brack whatever. For this to work, the ship would have to maybe be something of a salvaged vessel, or something the PC had to buy, and is operating in such a way that there was no ship assigned, but certain circumstances is forcing the PC to procure a non-Alliance/military spaceship, or something like that.

Actually there's still quiet a bit you can customize on a space ship while keeping it within alliance regulations.
Items relating to propulsion
Items relating to shielding
Items relating to weaponry
Power Flow & backbone configuration.
True you'd have to adhere to certain regulations such as levels of redundancies, but I think it'd be very interesting to be able to modify the ships stealth/exploration/war capabilities and tweak the ship any which way i could think of.

My focus is primarily on personalization on a superficial level, because these tactical things are only meaningful in the game if there's a consequence for their neglect.

Nah, you can buy Star Citizen for this.
ME should focus more on a good story and deep characters.
I like the idea of customising more, but ultimately I agree with this. It's nice to dream of all the things a game could be, but at the end of the day it won't have unlimited resources and man-hours put into it.

Assuming that Lead Writer is the same as in ME3... Well, there "good story" and "deep characters" will be highly arguable.
Firstly, it appears Mac Walters won't be lead writer. He's a "narrative director" or some such cryptic title. Secondly, we were talking about focus. While I wouldn't say that the story of the ME trilogy was flawless (particularly the ending of it) and every character had depth, you can't argue that those two were among the main foci (..?) of the games - regardless of how well you feel they handled those aspects
