Only if those lesser together rivaled the greater in power. You could gather all the lessers of Thedas and they would probably not even put a dent in the Chantry.

Well predicated on the inquisition being a rival power...which is possible given what is suggested happens to chantry leadership at the beginning. Truthfully I doubt the game is sophisticated enough to handle such an approach but you could role-play it that way.

I don't have the time right now to read a dozen pages, but a question:

What role would a fifth mage/magic-knowledgeable character actually fill, precisely? We already have a fade specialist, a classical master mage, a mageocracy genius, and also the occult/old magic specialist that is Morrigan, hanging off there in the distance playing mystery wolf.

If it's advisor against a magical enemy, our established characters already cover the likely/expected threats. If it's an advisor for our military forces if we incorporate mages, our military expert is already trained and knowledgeable about magic in general, with supporting characters plausibly covering gaps without needing another major character.

So, besides 'I want more', what's the need?

That would allude to an open conflict, in which case they wouldn't most likely stand a chance. Subtlety is your friend.

Altering the terms of war and avoiding direct confrontation while engaging in continuous and indecisive 'smale-scale attacks' is vital for a lesser power. The 'contest of killing' turns into a 'contest of endurance'. Both sides face ever rising costs as the war drags on so that ultimately the willingness to sustain them becomes decisive. Severing ties with trade, military and economics in general are vital for a lesser power to achieve victory.

At least that is the general essence of it, to put it simply.

You cannot "attack" the Chantry's holdings without also attacking the nation it is in. You cannot wittle down the Chantry with bugbites and guirella tactics. By attacking the Chantry you are creating more enemies than you are allies, and it will be the end of you.

Now if the Chantry itself is split into factions THEN you can support one of the factions within the Chantry. But that would be for the purpose of gaining the support of the full Chantry anyway.

Bottom line: The Chantry is one of the most important factions the Inquisition can get the support of, and SHOULD get the support of.

As I already alluded to, a direct conflict will never work. Using indirect methods that doesn't link to you are means to get by. Severing ties with the nation in holding, the Templars and the lyrium are means to weaken the Chantries influence. Certain wars can be won with economy alone.

Considering the state the Chantry is and is headed at, the only support from them would be a religious one, since they have lost control of both the Circles, the Templar Order and The Seekers.

That pretty much sums it up.

Wouldn't Morrigan Freewoman be our Mage Advisor in DA:I?

Probably not imo. She will probably be still the arcane advisor to empress Celene and I doubt she will take such a risk with moving to new organization when she has so much better position...at least at the begining. Too much templars:)

Oh and it is possible for us to go toe to toe with the Chantry...at least to a point (the religion still had millenium - or more - to establish it's faith in almost all the populace), not saying full war with it will be very smart mind you. It will indeed be too much enemies for us to battle. We will be the next Loghain:))

Oh forgot to say why it is possible - we might be able to secure the lyrium trade (which will force the chantry to take a step back if nothing else)....tho if we refuse lyrium to all templars I believe it will lead to lots of drama.

Well everyone in the game says the chantry is utterly broken, its not even united anymore. Probably when we say "chantry" now it means the one(s) in orlais and possibly Nevarra.

it sounded like they meant the power of the chantry is no longer united, the 3 factions that made it up are no longer working together, The Seekers no longer answer to the chantry after the chief seeker disbanded the Nevarran accord, the templars have divided into those who follow the chantry, and the Red Templars. Then there is the chantry with it's spiritual leadership over the masses, but that alone isn't enough to fight back it's enemies. Then again i could be completely wrong..

I think it would be nice if Morrigan could become an additional adviser to the Inquisition, especially since not every player has an inclination to side with Celene. She's not Andrastian (so she could prove a unique perspective that isn't available from the majority of Andrastian companions and advisers), she's an intelligent and cunning person, and she may have resources and knowledge that could prove invaluable to the Inquisitor (given how she seemed to be preparing for this years close to a decade before it happened).

I'm fine with the three pillars of the Inquisition that we have already. Although I personally believe that a character such as Aveline would be a better fit than Cullen when it comes to a military advisory role, I'm fine with Military, Diplomacy and Espionage. I don't think we really need a Mage advisor, I'm also pretty sure that Vivienne will speak up when necessary, as will Dorian.
