 A quick look back at Hawke's gifts to companions...

 

Hawke: Here, I got you a wooden halla carving, Merrill!

Merrill: Oh, you got that from Master Ilen, didn't you?

Hawke: uhh...

 

Hawke: Isabela! This talisman is Rivaini. Thought you might like it.

Isabela: Right, uh, you didn't notice anything strange in the design?

Hawke: What?

 

Hawke: Here, Fenris. I got you a book.

Fenris: I can't read...

 

Hawke: Hey, Fenris. 'Thought you might like this sword.

Fenris: Ah, yes. That sword is actually a mark of honor among the Tevinter magisters.

 

Hawke: Anders, I have something for you!

Anders: Oh? It's... a sacrilegious amulet! So grevious that I can't wear it in public for fear of execution -- WTF?!

 

Hawke: Look, Aveline. The shield of your namesake. =D

Aveline: Oh, that fictional character I've only expressed disdain for numerous times around you? Thank you. *spitefully throws it down on table*

 

 

So, what, my lovely writers? Is more quest-induced stupidity onto the protagonist on the way, or can not suck this time?

Ha, when you put them all together like that...; it is pretty funny how bad hawke was at gift gving. 

 

When i gave Aveline a shield she told me off for selling her old one...

Yeah, she told me off, too, in one playthrough, but I never sold it off. I kept her shield in storage the whole time.

LOL. I never thought about how much the gifts sucked. D: Especially compared to the Warden who gave everyone gifts that made them gush or almost brought them to tears.

In my first playthrough (when I thought everyone kept their starting weapons like a derp), Aveline says something like "I use Wesley's shield. It has served me well!" I love how varied that conversation is depending on thhe state of the shield.

Poor Hawke. Never realized how bad he had it until reading it all outlined. I do remember giving Fenris the book and having an awkward feeling after he stated he couldn't read. All the moment needed was some crickets chirping in the silence.

I don't remember Aveline ever saying she didn't like Aveline. All I remember with the shield thing was her saying that there's a lot of fake artifacts around, so Hawke probably wasted their money.

 

Though at least Hawke was better at it than the Warden. I'm not really sure Morrigan appreciated those dirty pantaloons I gave her.

You learned more about the person and could turn the situation to your favour. So yes, that was a possible outcome.

And there were many gifts that were unquestionably positive.

Sadly rather than have the companions universally love your gifts without question, Bioware's writers had the nerve to put some diverse and unexpected reactions to certain presents. Those complete hacks.

I hope there will be some gifts, at least. I really like giving them, especially to the companions who would disagree with every little thing I did. I wouldn't mind companion specific gifts, but I liked Origins methods. I know most don't, but meh-- opinions and all.

No, I'm pretty sure I'm thinking of Aveline.

 

Hawke says something like "Hey, Aveline. You're named after Aveline, and this is meant to be her shield. I thought you might like it.", and then Aveline says something along the lines of "Hawke, a lot of people claim to have artifacts that once belonged to Aveline. They're all fake. Thanks for the thought though."

reading hawkes convos with those gifts I remember all that and yes they all had something more to them that just didn't happen and I think that's part of the complaint . here's a gift oh you didn't notice these markings end of conversation . o.0

I gave them back to Mabarian (Dog) last time he brought them to me.  Don't know what he did with them, but I think he liked them.....
