Just a little thing I found weird. In DA, the further south you go the colder it gets. Zevran described Antiva as warm, and the Qunari lands are a hot and humid rain forest, as if both are closer to the equator. Both of these places are north of Fereleden, which is described as cold and harsh. And the area south of the wilds is described like an arctic tundra once you go south enough. Seems to me that Ferelden is quite close to their world's south pole, and more northern nations are closer to the middle of their world. And the Qunari apparently came from somewhere far to the north, likely past the equator.

Anyway, not the most important thread I've made, but it still struck me as interesting enough to post about.

The equator is north in the world of Thedas.

Think of Europe, then flip it upside down.

Right... The equator is north because Thedas is a continent below the equator in the southern hemisphere, that's my point. You don't really think of Thedas as some super southern place in their world, but it actually is.

I Imagine the equator is central. Like in our world. Thedas is simply south of it. I have no trouble thinking of Thedas being the south because it mimics New Zealand. So then the Warden, Hawke and the Inquisitor will all meet up for a New Years Eve barbeque on the beach.

Sunburn for everyone!

Not necessarily.

Since Thedas is in the southern hemisphere, and has no contact with a continent in the northern hemisphere, their calendar would not be in reverse (like it is in our world).

Yeah. Thedas is just a continent, really. They have no idea what the greater world they live on is like. There could be an Asian equivalent in their world and not even know it. Not that I expect to ever see the rest of the world, DA hasn't even had games in a quarter of the countries on this one continent so far. If we ever do see the world outside of Thedas, it will be many DA games from now when they're pretty much out of locations for games on the current continent.

Your snark is uncalled for. In your OP you say "the farther north you go the colder it gets".

On what basis can we call that reverse? All calendars are fundamentally arbitrary.

Thedas is kinda Europe flipped upside down.

If you squint at it and concede that the countries are all over the place.

I always thought that the Equator of the Planet of Thedas is located at the upper Edge of the Map we have, while the polar Circle is at the lower Edge.

Equator?  What is this heretical nonsense?  The world is flat, it is also the center of the universe and the sun moves around the flat world.  My inquisition will execute any heretics that preach this equator, round world nonsense!

The other day I let my dog in the house after a rain shower and told him he smelled like Fereldan, he seemed a tad offended.

I would compare it to south America more closely than Africa, but yes,it spans almost exclusively on the southern Hemisphere.

All this is assuming the world Thedas is set in follows the same geodynamics as our real life Earth does.

I mis-worded my objection to Thedas having summer during new years.

For our calender continents in the northern hemisphere start the year during the winter, while continents in the southern hemisphere have new years during summer.

In Thedas since society (excluding Qunari) developed in the southern hemisphere there is no reason to believe that Theodosians celebrate new years during the summer.

It appears to be farther south than either of those.

Aren't the poles equally as arbitrary?

Flip the globe around and suddenly Europe is in the southern hemisphere.

Maybe, but the maps of Thedas are all presented as stretching from south (Ferelden) to north (Par Vollen).  I can't imagine the game designers and artists would intentionally create upside down maps.  It's probably a reflection of how the planet is actually set up with regards to their sun.

Well, then you have the sun rising in the west.

Though in-universe I might speculate that the maps are orientated this way because they're following Tevinter convention, giving them a nice prominent position towards the top

Thedas could have retrograde rotation. We don't know.
