Valkyrie Profile is probably still fun to play, but if you play it I would say check out the guide on how to obtain the "real" ending. I guess you could try and figure it all out but I don't know how anyone could have personally.

I don't know if this belongs here (because I don't know all of the titles and some that I do know probably don't qualify as JRPG) but I wanted to share it with you just the same. Humble Bundle's weekly bundle is comprised of games from Japan that include: Unholy Heights, One Way Heroics, Gigantic Army, Astebreed, Ys Origin, Mitsurugi Kamui Hikae, and PixelJunk Shooter. You can get all these titles for $10.

My only problem with JRPGs is I want to write my own story like ME, DA, and Skyrim instead of being stuck in a narrative I can't change.
Ok I have to strongly disagree here. Yes some JPGs like FF, Bravely Default ect have you take on an established character(s) with no real choices but other JRPGs like most of Atlus games(key ones being P3P(Minato is too passive and is too silent hence hwy I used Minako) Persona 4, Devil Survivor 2, Nocturne, SMT IV ect, certain FE(Awakening being the big one with Robin) games ect allow you choices and to build the character you want. Just because you can't choose your gender or change your face really means nothing, nor do you really write your own story in ME and DA, Skyrim yes, because if you don't then you'll have nothing to do since 90% of the writing is bullocks.

Also the mention of Mother 3 reminded me of Yahtzee's lastest review of Earthbound. I wish these games all existed in the West, along with Eternal Punishment and a few other good games that never made it across the sea.
ZP
I love the way he describes the game. Like how it's childish but in a good way that invokes nostalgia.
Sounds like something I would like. I wish they would port SNES games to the 3DS.

I will go into more of an in depth review of Ar Tonelico once I'm done with it(I would like some directions, as I am currently lost in the Prism Garden)
I'm going Aurica's path, and will come back to try Misha and Shuerlia's after I play the other 2.
It's really great so far, and the music, by Gia the music.
This is one of my favorites(i.e. the lyrics are in my sig), but the lyrics are kinda spoilery, so don't read into them too much.

I disagree. I like being able to customize my character making it a big deal for me. I also understand that in the end it doesn't matter story wise, but I still prefer the illusion of choice.

Again, I was able to make Yu and MInak(just two examples) far more interesting then Shepard, Warde, Hawke ect because the freedom that was given to the personality, how you interpreted things ect was far greater then those games.
Then there's Robin in FE:A where you can customize your gender and look.

I would rather have both to customize. /shrug Correct me if I am wrong, but aren't the majority turn based instead of action based? Not unless they have changed over the years.

It would have been nice to make Yu a female if you so choose and they don't make Yu have a canon personality in other medias. It makes your choice meaningless in a way once they give an official interpretation for him. I agree about Robin though, FE awakening allows you to be a character in the game with ability to customize what their looks and ability is, but unfortunately, Robin lost some player's agency with the auto-talk like with Shepard.Again, I was able to make Yu and MInak(just two examples) far more interesting then Shepard, Warde, Hawke ect because the freedom that was given to the personality, how you interpreted things ect was far greater then those games.

I pretty much couldn't bring myself to actually beat the game when I was like 12 or whenever I first played it. <Spoilers> Being stranded in some desolate place in pure robot form, going up against some kind of transforming alien with pulsing ambient industrial weirdness was just too much.
I ended up beating it later though, I just needed to level more really.

I think Robin is one of the worst self-inserts out there.

As far as choices go I pretty much stopped caring at some point. It doesn't really affect me whether there are choices or branching stories or not, I sort of feel annoyed I'm missing content. Skyrim is a fairly interesting world, so is Tales of Destiny, I just experience the content in a different trajectory.
I used to kind of think they were important though. Also some Japanese RPGish games had some of the most interesting choices I've seen, at any rate, such as Tactics Ogre: LUCT.

Quick question. Would .Hack series and Kingdom hearts be in this category? I normally characterize JRPGs from regular RPGs by how they do the story and combat.

You're not meant to self-insert her/him. In fact you should not self-insert at all but that's just my opinion.

Eh alot of problems come with this. Atlus no matter what has to "canonise" a path in the Persona series since the main series has a link. In the first two games this was not a issue since both really only had one ending, then Persona 3 brought in two endings, then it brought Minako after Minato being mentioned already. Then 4 brought in a crap load of endings. Then the fighting game which Atlus had to choose a name, voice and personality. Remember, just because something is "canon" in Atlus games does not mean your pt is invalid as nocturne explains that there are billions of universes/worlds, so what you do happens there, Atlus might just not continue that state but that state does not disappear. "canon" is really only the world state that Atlus uses if it connects to an other game, but in there eyes, all possible outcomes are canon in a way thanks to the Amala network(not the teleport network which shares the same name)
This is why Atlus does not really do gender selections, only few games done this and it caused nothing but issues for Atlus.
