You're not meant to self-insert her/him. In fact you should not self-insert at all but that's just my opinion.

Eh alot of problems come with this. Atlus no matter what has to "canonise" a path in the Persona series since the main series has a link. In the first two games this was not a issue since both really only had one ending, then Persona 3 brought in two endings, then it brought Minako after Minato being mentioned already. Then 4 brought in a crap load of endings. Then the fighting game which Atlus had to choose a name, voice and personality. Remember, just because something is "canon" in Atlus games does not mean your pt is invalid as nocturne explains that there are billions of universes/worlds, so what you do happens there, Atlus might just not continue that state but that state does not disappear. "canon" is really only the world state that Atlus uses if it connects to an other game, but in there eyes, all possible outcomes are canon in a way thanks to the Amala network(not the teleport network which shares the same name)

This is why Atlus does not really do gender selections, only few games done this and it caused nothing but issues for Atlus.

I can see that. I have only played persona 3 of the series with me not even beating it. I am on the final month with Nix coming.

I always felt that wasn't the case. Robin is supposed to reflect the player's game mentality as revealed through supports (like with Virion and Severa on tactics) and can pretty much date anything of the opposite gender. He can also solo levels if the player oh so wishes despite being a tactician.

I wish they made the Tactician class somewhat weaker and more support-oriented so that wasn't the case. I also wish his personality was more fleshed out than "striving to be the best tactician". Then again, flanderization is a problem with quite a few Fire Emblem characters. Despite all of his flaws, he always comes out on top and turns them into even greater victories.

Sorry. I'm being that guy...

Quick question. Would .Hack series and Kingdom hearts be in this category? I normally characterize JRPGs from regular RPGs by how they do the story and combat.

Yes they do or at least I count them.

If there are different worlds, then there could be a world where Yu is a female. Atlus could have their own canon, but they should still provide agency for the players. I hope I could choose to play as a female in Persona 5 if I so choose. Whenever I play Japanese anime games, I would prefer to be a girl instead of an androgynous guy, although it's hard to tell a difference either way. :P

Any decent sized turn-based JRPGs on the PC that feature a relatively open or at least varied world to explore? Right now, all I can think of on Steam are Agarest and Last Remnant. Had Last Remnant's story/writing not been so banal, it would've been a really good game for me. Still like it though.

How's Trails in the Sky? Anybody here played it?

I would definitely count Kingdom Hearts as JRPG, in fact, I would put a number of Zelda games in there also (pretty hard to put Mario in there though). I would also put many tactical RPG games like Fire Emblem and so on in there also.

Erm, as to the above I'm no help, I didn't even really know open world turned based JRPGs existed until I did a wikipedia on Agarest, unless for some crazy reason you never played FF7 in which case FF7.

Oh apparently Breath of Fire IV is on PC and that's a pretty solid series so, might be worth a shot although BoF is often pretty linear.

I'm currently playing Trails but I've only just started and it's been very slow going. What little I can tell you is that there's lots of text, which is fine by me and really serves to flesh out the characters and locations, combat is turn-based, enemies can do a lot of damage if you're not ready for them (there is some grinding), and it can be a pain to figure out where to go and what to do. The UI is a bit awkward to navigate as well so it's not the greatest of ports.

I haven’t played many JRPG’s lately but i am planning on getting the PS4 to play a few of the new ones. I wish they made them for the PC.

Incidentally, Dom's mention of Ni Nu Kuni reminded me that I still need to get that game too. Another JRPG I want to own along with Xeno and a few others.

The art style and the overall feel of the game are very similar to Eternal Sonata and Tales of Vesperia, so you'll probably be into it. Earthbound did get a Wii U port(though I'm still leery about buying one), and Mother 4 is coming around winter.

I'm drawing a blank, a lot of the better jRPGs that might fit the bill are on consoles only. :|

Atlus uses anime cutscenes in their games, once you fiddle around with gender selection, those scenes are gone for good which means stuff like this? Gone. Atlus also does not have as much money as people think(their net worth is low) so they have to make hard choices, this means their game will most likely have a set gender since it's easier to work with, not to mention MInako is largely ignored by Atlus post P3P which pisses off alot of people. It's simply not worth it. Would it be nice if P5 had a gender selection? Yes but that's highly unlikely.

The PC is really a barren wasteland when it comes to JRPGs, however you can emulate anythiing from the PS2 down.

I heard of a few obscure PC JRPG gems on Steam, not including Final Fantasy.

I don't think anime scenes are that long, and is it really that expensive to provide a small variations in certain scenes. Even if it's that expensive, there are ways around it like the anime happens from the perspective of the protagonist like with Robin. Atlus ignoring Minako is their fault, not the fans. Of course they can choose to canonize a gender, but the fans have the right to complain. It's no different from the complain when they give Yu a canon personality and backstory. This is one of the things I don't like about JRPG. Whenever there are actually gender selection in a game, the male one is automatically the canon one.

I'm waiting for the PS3 version! Square Enix still has it on their Japanese website! It'll be awesome since they took the time to polish it, right, everyone??!! RIGHT??!! It's only been around six years!!

*profound sadness*

Don't mind not having it for a set protagonist, but when they pretend the protagonist represent you and your perspective then at least provide the choice to customize them like gender. Persona protagonist is basically just Link version of Yu. Someone with a set background and everything but act as a silent protagonist to make it seem like he's actually a player's avatar. I'd say that Yu is not a self-insert character as much as people like to think.

But that goes for Minako, Minato and all the other Silent Protagonists too.. Each of them have a few set pre-determined dialogue options represents different moods to flesh out the protagonist's personality, whereas the rest can easily be determined by the player.

Doesn't make any of them any less a Silent Protagonist... well except the blue-haired bloke who spends almost the entire game keeping his trap shut, with barely any inputs in terms of his dialogue. But that's just how his disposition is crafted in comparison to his female counterpart or Narukami.

I'm more allured to the previous posts that stated that Persona series as one of the games that allow freedom customization on the scale of Western games like Skyrim which in fact isn't true. That beg the question, do people consider Dark Souls and Dragon's Dogma to be WRPG or JRPG?

I consider them to be a Jrpg in a very western fantasy style.

Skyrim? There is about as many set dialogue lines for the card-board protagonist in that game as there is for any other Silent Protagonist. I suppose I can agree with the fact that you can't play an elf in Persona. That's certainly a step above the rest, if you can call it that.

Skyrim doesn't have a lot of structure in its narrative, at the expense of the heavy sandboxness, which is why I found it boring very quickly.
