Oh cool, I've actually been on a bit of a VN binge lately, and just recently finished Muv-Luv Extra, which was kinda crap but I wanted to get to Muv-Luv Unlimited and Muv-Luv Alternate as I've heard those are really good. Am about 4 hours into Unlimited right now and it's way different but quite a bit better.
Before that I read through the entirety of Grisaia no Kajitsu in about 4-5 days, and it's utterly brilliant. If you are the least bit interested in visual novels you owe it to yourselves to check out this VN. It's got a perfect mix of humor and seriousness, as well as some really good personal stories for all the girls IMO.
Other than that, I've tried my hand at reading Fate/Stay Night, but I don't really enjoy the overly verbose writing.
I did read and thoroughly enjoy Katawa Shoujo and Yume Miru Kusuri, though, both are excellent.
As for JRPGs, I'm currently eagerly awaiting Tales of Xillia 2 and Persona 5, even if that is some distance away. I was planning on picking up a 3DS in order to play Bravely Default as well, as I've heard nothing but good things about it.

I still think that Grissia is overrated. I did not 100% it though. When I got to Makina's route something made me drop the VN. Don't even remember what exactly.
My favorite routes were Michuru's and Sachi's. I couldn't really connect with either Amane or Yumiko and thus felt really indifferent . A shame that Kazuki didn't have a route of her own.
Oh and I wanted to say that FSN is at least as good as any of the other VN's you played. While the fate route is not that good the other two routes are a lot better.
And this thread reminds me that I still need to complete Hyperdimension Neptunia Victory.

Eh, I didn't enjoy Makinas route either, but I've got a slight aversion to lolicon characters in general and that might be why. I did enjoy her personal story though. As for the others, I did enjoy each character, and I guess that might be why I enjoyed Grisaia as much as I did. It is rather character heavy after all. Also, Sachi = best girl.
Oh, and apparently the sequels have way more Kazuki than Kajitsu, but neither Grisaia no Mekyuu/Grisaia no Rakuen have been translated yet, much to my utter sadness ![]()
As for FSN, I did really enjoy the anime, which might be the reason I'm having such a hard time getting through the Fate route. It's kinda "been there, done that" for me. I also kinda dislike some of the MCs dialogue. It can come of as rather skeevy IMO. I will power through for Unlimited Blade Works and Heavens Feel though. I just plan to finish Muv-Luv first.

Sachi is a great character but I personally would go with Kazuki
.
It will probably take ages until the sequels will be translated. The guy in charge for the translation for the sequel has (understandebly) dropped the tranlation for a little while because he works one a translation for another VN (don't remember wich one) and he gets payed for that translation from what I understood. But he is planning to pick up translation for the Grissia games after that.
From what I heard the anime made by DEEN is really bad and doesn't make a lot of sense if you read the VN beforehand so that is why I'm never planning to touch it. Can't wait on the Ufotable UBW anime release though. And you know I actually agree with you. I also had a really hard time with Shirou in the fate route although the reason for him acting the way he does gets somewhat explained in another route. He also becomes a lot more likeable in the other two routes.

My JRPG library is full of...
Tales of Symphonia Chronicles
And that's it. Last year I burned through Tales of Graces F, Tales of Xillia 2, Tales of Vesperia PS3, FFXIII-2 and FFXIII again (that game isn't half as bad as it was made out to be to me tbh. To each their own I guess).
Since then I have found myself with little in the way of PS3 JRPGs that have jumped out at me really... Which sucks because I like them. Playing the Tales series makes me kinda picky though since I like my ATB in my games along with LMBS. I'm spoiled, I'll say it outright, but that's the way it is.
If the people who want to play Xillia 2 want more info on it I could say but I don't know how to make the spoiler tag thing so I can't

It seems like there is much greater focus on Visuals Novels these days. When I was gaming earlier on I don't remember their being any VNs, now there is a pretty large number of them.
Or maybe I just never paid much attention to them anyway? I'm curious though, and this is the JRPG and Visual Novel thread so... anyone know if that's true or.. perhaps there was always a thriving VN community I just wasn't aware of them.

Not me, but I imagine at least a few people from the anime/manga thread would be interested on account of the Spice and Wolf guy being attached to it.
Also that trailer music sounds familiar. That group did a couple of anime openings (both harem it looks like, dohoho, including High School of the Dead) and a bunch of touhou remixes.

There is always Fuwanovel. Besides them I don't really know of any other thriving VN community.

What is it? I might look it up.
I haven't "played" it but I did some digging and found out it's something called a 'kinetic' novel. What that means, basically, is that there's little to no interaction from the player. It's like reading a graphic novel on your computer. I'm still tempted though.

Tales of Symphonia is sort of dark and twisted so far, it's pretty interesting. I never had a gamecube so I'm glad I get a chance on PS3. Raine is a fairly funny character also.

The game wastes no time destroying your first impressions, which I like. I find it to be one of the darker Tales games overall because of the second half of the story.

There are a lot of JRPGs I like, but there aren't enough hours to play them all ![]()
My personal favorites are:
Final Fantasy IV (SNES Hard-Type version) - the first JRPG I've played, and my favorite to this very day
Final Fantasy VI - nothing really needs to be said here ![]()
Black Sigil: Blade of the Exiled (NDS) - this one wasn't very liked by critics, but I still consider it a hidden gem; great story and characters
