I remember a discussion in this forum sometime back about it, and I was wondering if we now have a final word for it?
Spears are such an integral part of almost every pre-modern army that not having it in Dragon Age actually makes the universe less believable. So I was hoping they are there this time around.
Will there be spears in this game?

Not for your companions nor Inquisitor. Other NPCs or mobs, who knows...

Yes there will
Always carried by npcs and enemies, unfornately the science behind wielding spear is far to complicated for the
Inquinsition ![]()

I think this was a question on that huge Raptr list and they said you will not get spears in DAI for Inquisitor or your companions to use. Don't take this as fact because I'm not 100% sure but I believe I did read that in those questions...

Well, while we may not get spears... on the plus side we do get thrown daggers this time around!

That said, we do have an (early) enemy model with what looks like a long spear...

Yep (it's under the Tevinter heading)... and I want to know what that giant bear-dog-thing is!
Here's the original images they came from...

Not unless you count the spear in my Inquisitor's pants. (Though in all honesty, it's really more of a longsword.)
Spear?
Talking about the "Torpedo" are you? ![]()
Well, back to the topic:
I would want spear type weapons (halberds, long axes, throwing spears etc.)...they are something armies of that period used, after all ![]()

I think spears are fairly difficult to do in games like these.
They played a large part in warfare throughout the ages, but mostly in huge armies.
Spears are pretty shitty weapons when you have small skirmishes. The advantage of an spear is it's range, but if you fight 1 on 1 then the enemy usually has an easy side knocking the weapons aside and once he is inside it's range the spear is fairly useless. It got powerfull when you have a whole regiment of soldiers holding the enemy at bay with spears, because these formations are really hard to break from the front and it doesn't require much of a training for soldier to use a spear properly, while a sword for example takes a long time of training to get used properly and takes more metal to create.
Most armies constisted of conscripted farmers with no battle experience and holding a spear in front of them was the only thing they could train them to do quickly enough.
If we were looking at what's realistic than a spear is not a weapon you want to have in small skirmishes, unless you want to throw it. Because it got so many disadvantages against other weapons.
They could implement them like the grey worm fight from game of thrones with lots of twirling and jedi-like perception on grey worms part. But then you can't really make the realism argument for that, because a spear would never get used like that in reality.

This is not true with anything except very long pikes. Most polearms were around 6 feet in length and could easily be pulled closer to the center as the need arose. The only ones which were really that long were cavalry lances and the aforementioned pikes.

Throwing daggers are all but useless. They don't puncture armor, and you have no guarantee that they will hit pointy side first.
You also end up in the awkward position of "Oops, now I don't have a weapon because I decided to throw it". ![]()

This.
Hollywood has convinced the public that the sword was a far more effective/important weapon than it actually was. Hollywood also has people believing that swords were primarily used for cutting instead of stabbing...which a spear also excels at...
