So this is my fourth playthrough of the game. My second time playing a mage but first time as an arcane warrior (the first time I was bloodmage/spirit healer) I'm a little unsure where to put my talent points. Right now I'm level 13, but I haven't leveld up since 10 so I have 4 talent points (including Eamon's reward). I also have a Tome of Arcane Technique and the book from Connors demon.

My current spells are:

Arcane Bolt- Arcane Shield

Combat Magic

All fire spells
Stone Armor
Glyphs of paralysis, warding, and replusion
mind blast, forcefield
disorient, horror, sleep

At level 14 I'm planning to take the first two perks of Bloodmage and improved Combat Magic.
I'm unsure of what other spells to get. I've read that miasma is good but weakness and paralysis seem pretty useless. I had paralysis on Morrigan last playthrough (hard difficulty) and almost everything resisted it. Waking nightmire also wasn't very good. It was useful for stunning enemies and getting crits with my rogue but that's about it. I have Wynne in my party with haste so I'm unsure if I should go that route. I'm considering finishing out the mind blast branch or going for spell might. I also am thinking of the hex branch to get the hex of misdirection.

So far I've put all points into magic except maybe 1 or 2 in willpower. I also found all the essences and font in the fade. Plot wise I've only done the Mages Tower, Redcliffe, and the Urn of Sacred Ashes. I did a few side quests in Denerim too but just to get the Dead Coat of Arms.

The gear is also really confusing for me. Somehow I have a higher defense rating if I wear the senior enchanter robes vs if I wear armor. I'm thinking of wearing the Armor of Diligence but I don't understand how it has worse defense than my robes +higher fatiuge. Does the spellpower boost from the robes really give that much a bonus to my arcane shield? I'm also considering Varathorns armor. I dislike massive amor even though people say cailins set is best.

Right now my gear is:

Staff of Magister Lord/Spellweaver/Dead Coat of Arms (I also have the Veshialle but I gave it to Allister, and the meteor ore)
Senior enchanter robes

Gloves from Ulred (+20% fire damage)
The mage boots with +12 def from Trickster Whim
Apprentice amulet( switching with Lifedrinker when I take bloodmage at level 14, until I get the one from shale's quest)

Magisters belt? (+3 spellpower)
+5% fire damage ring

+10% fire damage ring

My party is Allister (Tank), Wynne (Healer, and buffs, with earth branch maxed), and Leliana as a DPS backstabber. So far the hardest fights for me have been  Beyha Joam, the mimic party in the guantlet, and the assasins from Leliana's quest. Surprisngly I beat Uldred on the first try no problem. Revenants have been tough too, but I haven't had to lower the difficulty yet.

Well this thread is too long now, but thanks for your help. :)

I like mana-clash, it takes care of those pesky enemy mages and abominations. I like Andruil's Blessing belt on my mage characters ~ rings= Lifegiver and "key to the city", plus amulet of the war mage.

I recommend the Character Respec mod, if playing on the PC. This will help in repec of Attributes, spells, talents, and skills; also unlocks Specializations, if desired.

I got shimmering shield yesterday and it's just so overpowered. I was easily able to solo the High Dragon on nightmare. I also did Ruins of Ostagar and Wardens Keep without even needing to heal once. Kind of takes the challenge out of it.

I play on Xbox but I'm not lying. I had well over 100 defense and 75% fire resistance. He would knock me down a lot but barely did any damage. He even did his jaw attack 3 times with little effect. The only spell I used (aside from sustainables) was glyph of warding to boost my def.

My gear was Spellweaver/Dead Coat of Arms, Varathorns Armor, Cindefel Guantlets, Magus Warboots, Lifedrinker, Andruil's Blessing, Key to the City, and Lifegiver

I really think robes are better in Origins, armor better in Awakening. Reason being you can't get armor runes until awakening, and robes do better as far as enchantments.

The Joam fight-just remember to take out the mage early who is at a elevated position.Mana Clash, Arrow of Slaying, or something else. A lot of the time what I do is Flying Swarm to get their health down, then Overwhelm to finish them off.

^^Yes, that mage is a pesky creature^^. I like to wear armor on my AW. There are so many wonderful armors for the PC player... :D

@MikeParty1 I did not think you were lying, I just love to watch those type of videos. :)
