Wow I'm really stunned by this. Even though I disliked what happened with ME3 I'm still thankful for all his work with Bioware, I wish him the best.

He had a funny tweet about this a while back...

Casey Hudson ‏@CaseyDHudson

One day @DoktorZee said "I had a crazy title idea on the weekend: MASS EFFECT". I said "Well, I don't hate it," and we went with it.

Oh.

My bad.

Then that's a big loss.

My feelings exactly. Still not a fan of how ME3 turned out, but if it weren't for Mr. Hudson, we'd never have Mass Effect and KotOR.

I just found out about this and to be honest I'm in shock. I'm having a hard time visualising what the future of the ME series will be now that it's chief architect and spiritual father has now left Bioware

I didn't expect to read this today.

Neither did I.

He is very likely the main reason any Mass Effect games exist at all.

He's the reason you have Mass Effect in the first place. At least, one of the primary reasons.

This.

I wasn't a fan of ME3 but I've never singled out a particular person for ME3's shortcomings, on the other hand I do acknowledge Casey's contribution to ME1,ME2 and ME3, to be blunt I don't think this series would have existed today if it were not for him.

Someone tell me, isn't this the guy that butchered the ME3 ending?

Also one of the guys chiefly responsible for creating the entire trilogy. Which is more important?

My respect to him, even though i hated the way trilogy ended he is one of the reasons why ME universe exists + he was also behind KOTOR, which is still my favourite RPG up to this day.

Stunned. This is pretty big.

I was under the impression that he would be working on the super secret new IP through completion.

Regardless, I wish him the best. Looking forward to hear on his future plans.

Everyone, feel free to practice some empathy. I really do not believe that this is the time or place for some of the posts I'm seeing here.

Future of Bioware: problematic

This logic is so flawed to me. Bioware is a big studio with loads of talented people working together to craft these gaming experiences. Why would you assume there's no continuity from what Casey and the "Old Guard" built to what the studio continues to do today and in the future? I loved Baldur's Gate and Neverwinter Nights as much as anybody and it'd be great if all those people who built the foundation for Dragon Age to act as successor were still around, but does that mean Mike Laidlaw, Mark Darrah and the key DA people who weren't "Old Guard" are incapable of honoring and building off that foundation? Ridiculous. They'll do fine.

I watched a GDC talk by him, I was very impressed by his skill and dedication to Bioware and the games. Shame you have to go but all the best regardless!

Just a quick correction, Mark Darrah has been with BioWare since 1997.

This is sad, he was responsible for the epicness of KOTOR and the ME series, but he was also one of the key components of the ME3 ending too.

Best of luck, you are awesome, and you have my thanks for making the Mass Effect series. :)

Best of luck Casey.

And to others please use some restraint when posting.  If you didn't like something that is fine but that does not give anyone the right to belittle a person or the work, especially when you focus on five minutes of game time (whether or not the person was even involved) and ignore pretty much everything else the person did.

Wish all the best for him and his next adventures.

I hope that his absence doesn't affect the next game(s) but wish that the new person in charge will give the franchise a different direction. A new pair of eyes and all that.

I don't care if it's a big studio. That's arguably part of the problem. Casey created and was at the forefront of many of the projects I fell in love with over the past 15 years. Many of the writers from said projects have moved on from Bioware. First it was Drew. Not to mention several key figures leaving after ME3. Casey being one of the last of those people that were left, is now the most recent to depart. The most successful games they've had were under this man's direction. My logic is sound.

On a personal note, I couldn't care less about DA. It never hooked me.

Stop going on GAF.

Huh? Why's that? (Besides the general reasons)

Anyway, in about a month I'll be doing my media blackout so I won't be going to any gaming sites!

I'm sad to see him go, but I wish him nothing but the best. He was a huge reason my favorite fictional setting was created at all. I've enjoyed countless hours in Mass Effect--with laughter, with wonderment, and with not a few tears shed.  My life has been happier because Mass Effect came to be in it. I know it might sound silly to some to say a video game has enriched my life, but it's true.  Thank you, Casey, for making that possible.

I thank him for creating the Mass effect universe, but i can't forget that the trilogy as a whole is a scattered mess from day one, so I'm not really sad to see him leave Bioware.

Still, I wish him the best in what he intends to do next.
