That's crappy. I've been looking forward for new IP. Sadly that he will be mostly remembered for ME3 endings despite all those awesome games he made before.
No he won't.
Anyone that doesn't have the maturity of a pineapple is able to see that without him you wouldn't have those awesome games in the first place.

If it hadn't been for him then someone else would have done something else.

I remember the tingling feeling of exitement when I first played Mass Effect, the start of a fantastic journey. It was - and is - magical, truly. All three games. A bunch of talkative pixels have given me real-life-caliber feelings.
Thank you, Casey Hudson, for your storytelling and enriching my life.

Sucks, but seems like an amicable departure and I wish him the best. Thanks for the space memories, good sir.
Yay! See ya, wouldn't wanna be ya! Where's the party?
Hopefully, if the new ME is a series, they will actually take in to account your choices etc when you get to the finale, instead of catering to one persons ego.

The major change took place in ME2, with Casey at the helm. If they'd swap out Mac Walters as well, I'd have hope for ME4.
Casey was always in charge of Mass Effect.
He created the series, pitched it to his superiors at Bioware, wrote the draft design document and was Executive Producer for all three games. For lack of a better comparison, he is the series.
He certainly didn't start on ME2.

The endings involved destroying the Reapers and damning the consequences, sacrificing most of humanity to build Reapers and save the other races, or some third option that I was never very clear on. These were more or less the endings in the leak. Afterwards, Mac Walters and Casey Hudson worked on altering the ending due to some reason I can't recall. Maybe it was negative fan feedback? No clue, but this is most of what I remember hearing and reading in the months following the release of Mass Effect 3, and its following controversy regarding the ending. I could most definitely be wrong.
No, the leak is exactly the same as what was in the final game, down to the same dialogue with the Catalyst (called "GUARDIAN" in the leak) and the presentation of the same three choices to Shepard.
There was never any other ending, and they didn't change anything after the leak. I don't know where the rumour started that Casey and Mac rewrote anything - the ending that was in the late 2011 leak was exactly the same as the one in the March 2012 game.

The good thing about the ME3 ending is that it allows for the creation of new games with the current (or future) timeline. The only way they would have been able to do another ME game, if they had done a more traditional ending to ME3, would have been to do a prequel series. Unfortunately, that is usually a bad idea since a prequel game would have to "evolve" the game play they would end up having more advanced technology than what was present in the original trilogy (Star Wars anyone?). The other draw back to a prequel would be that we already know how the story ends which kind of defeats the purpose of whatever story is told in a prequel. With the way ME3 was ended the universe is (potentially) untouched and allows the creation of future games.
I would also propose that the rumor that Hudson/Walters rewrote the entirty of the ME3 ending was an blaming by the parts of the fanbase that were upset with the ending. Conspiracy theories always pop up whenever someone is dissatisfied with something.
Moving back on topic:
It's always sad when a developer decides to retire from the industry, but I imagine being a game developer brings up a lot of stress. He likely ended up suffering some sort of burnout (evidenced by the blog post provided it isn't just PR spiel). Either way, I'm sure he'll be successful with whatever it is he decides to do.
Back to off topic:
How old is Casey Hudson? The man looks like he's still in his mid 20's (which is a good thing for those wondering)...

Wow! To me Casey's departure is like as if James Hetfield would have left Metallica. This guy was one of the most important creative minds there. At least to me he was. Hell he came up with the idea of the whole Mass Effect universe. He is it's father. It was his vision which Bioware brought to life. I'm truly sorry to see this happening, since I loved his work and input and I was inspired by his passion for the things he does. Also both of us are sci-fi fans. So seeing a fellow hard-core sci-fi fan, and creative mastermind at that, leaving behind an important creative workshop for sci-fi is a sad thing in itself.
I wish Casey good health, good luck and a prosperous and joyful life with his family, friends and colleagues. I also wish him to find a way and place where he can gratify all of his creative energies for the delight of us all! I'm looking forward to hearing from his future projects!
Thank you for your work, passion and all the exciting and entertaining moments you gave me and all of us here!
Ps.: To all you guys whose minds - after such a long time - are still so fixed on ME3's ending and still hold such a grudge with any developer of ME including Casey for this: Have some class guys and try to behave like mature and intelligent human beings instead of spitting out malovelent posts about this situation.

I think above all he probably just wants to spend more time with his family and avoid crunch time/"triage" period this time around... this business takes a toll that he may be no longer prepared to pay. Thanks for the fond memories of wonderful experiences that I will never forget, you left a lasting mark on all of us.

At a personal level I wish him all the best for his career and life.
At a gaming level It's too early to see if his departure will affect the next ME game positively or negatively. Guess we have to wait till ME:Next will be out to see this.
Great hope for it.
Who is now leading the ME Project by the way?

... *sighs* Look guys, girls, I know I'm part of the crowd who's still bitter because of the third game ruining our fun and our immersion, but cut the man some slack. He's only one man and yes he made decisions that got us mad, but I think we should at least show some respect for the other games he was responsible for in the BioWare brand. I'm not saying I forgive him but I'm also sad to see him go. Like I said, I wanted him to stay and fix this mess for the fourth game, making a direct sequel, choosing an ending and allowing people to see the aftermaths of the three choices. I wanted to see how the world would expand now that the Reapers' threat has been dealt with and now that the remaining Leviathans are probably out there, preparing for a revenge or a galaxy domination. I know the writers are responsible for those lore elements, but Casey was the glue behind them, making sure everything would go smoothly. I don't agree with all his choices, heck... Yesterday I was pissed off at him and I was bitching because I'm this passionate. But like I said, cut this man some slack. I'm bummed and sad to see him go but at the same time, I'm also curious to see where the franchise is going from now on. I'm not sure I will purchase the new game until I hear more about it though.

Good luck to you Casey. Thank you for the thousands upon thousands of work hours you poured into these games, its very much appreciated.
16 years at a top AAA Developer is an amazing achievement.
But I'm not surprised burnout/ fatigue set in, after that long it must have gotten a bit difficult to get excited about ANOTHER game. Wanting new challenges in life only natural & I wish him the best in what ever he does next.
If he does decide to get back into games down the line, I'm sure he will walk into what ever job he wants with that resume of shipped games to his name.
Good luck & Best wishes man.

I was really sad to hear this. It definitely means the end of an era. I wish all the best to Casey, and I'd like to say a big-big THANK YOU for the Mass Effect series, which is easily one of the best game series I've ever played.

there is too many people out there that blames Casey personnaly. They doing it in a way like he never did any of those games even if they are aware about it. Negative emotions are much more powerful than positive. No he won't.

I have enjoyed the mass effect games and thought they were some of the best sci-fi games ever made even if i was super critical for ME2 but that is only because i liked mass effect so much.
Wish you the best in any new projects and will be keeping an eye out on any new game you will be involved in.
