Let me put it this way if you know your Christianity and european history the inquisition was formed by the Church to hunt down and vanquish Heretics and enemies of the Church, but later it was used for one of the biggest genocides in human history, namley the witch hunting during the darkages. The inquisition itself was a way for the Church to demonstrate and spread the fear of its Power. And if the inquisition was involved in any way, innocent or guilty none were safe because the Church was never wrong when they got there extracted confessions.

so what im hoping for here is that bioware really has done its research and not just taken the name inquistion from the history books without knowing the full meaning of what it really was.

So when we rule the inquisition i hope that bioware can with its capabilities show us  a fraction what the inquisition was during that period and why we should be happy for that is gone

I doubt very much Bioware doesn't know what the Inquisition was in our world.  I also doubt very much there will be references to how evil the Inquisition was in our world.  They could, of course, but I would doubt very much that they would.

I guess we'll all know for sure come November, though.

This isn't the real world, this is Thedas. Just because they probably aren't going to reference how bad the real Inquisition was does not mean that they are unaware of that. It wouldn't even make sense for them to do that because the Inquisition is already something that exists in Thedas history and it is not the same thing as the Catholic one was.

At its base this is what Inquisition means:

Full Definition of INQUISITION
1
:  the act of inquiring :  examination

Which is why we are the Inquisition, we are inquiring as to why the breaches have happened and how to stop it.

The name of Dragon Age: Inquisition comes from the word "inquisition," meaning a prolonged or intensive investigation or questioning. It is not meant to draw parallels with the Spanish Inquisition, as the objective of the organization is to find out what's behind the veil tears, not to convert people to Andrastian via the sword. Dragon Age Inquisition sounds much better than Dragon Age: Intensive Investigation.

and if you know your Monty Python then nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition.

Really though I think it's just a name they wanted to use. I imagine some people at BioWare know exactly what the real life Inquisition was but that they aren't going to get into any sort of commentary about it.

And that is always a good enough reason, irrespective of any supposed cultural context.

Ahem, and as a reader of actual history books rather than populist history I'd also like to point out that the Inquisition killed only 3 witches, and it was during the rennaissance era NOT the dark ages.  The Inquisition's ACTUAL job was to 'persuade' jews to convert.  Nab em for the crimes they actually committed, not the ones that were attributed to them by the much more witch-hunting church of england after the English Civil War.

I'm not convinced that that is substantially better.  Religious 'persuasion' has never, and (likely) will never, be gentle and by definition, can never be reasoned or reasonable.

Build a bridge and get over it.

The word inquisition means exactly that, and the use of it by other entities does not change its meaning, even in history.

BioWare , I'm certain, have no interest in causing any moral, ethical, nor religious conflict in the naming of their game. For you to suggest such, implies that you are looking for cannon fodder.

Move on.

Your history is a bit screwy. Most of the stories about the real world Inquisition were created and spread by opponents of the Church, mostly Protestants. Also, all of that happened in the Renaissance, not the Dark Ages. Further, the Spanish Inquisition was created by the Spanish government, not the Church.

I think you should do some research before you accuse Bioware of not having done research of their own.

While we liked the name because it fit and sounded good, I was told we extensively had focus groups and feedback from all over where basically the consensus was, at worst "I thing the title fits, but I could see how someone else could maybe take offense to it."  So we did do research to make sure people would be okay with the term.

As such, I'm also going to close the thread down because it's just going to spawn discussion about the Spanish Inquisition and that's just going to derail things.
