I find that the engineer's versatility when dealing with enemies defenses effectively means that you can make you're squadmates really specialized so that they only have two active powers plus their passive (except for Miranda and Jacob). I spec my squad so that they max out their first and unique power; the reason I do this is purely because I prefer to role-play this game instead of damage stats and the like. I always thought it weird to have it where your squadmate couldn't use their unique power even though they are built around it like Grunt's fortification or Liara's stasis.

You might think then that this would make some squadmates redundant, but tbh I don't really care because I can quite easily complete insanity by using my favourite class the engineer. Also I generally prefer to max out a few powers instead of spreading points across multiple skills without them reaching their fullest potential. Overload is a great example of this where it's effects can be improved to overheat weapons to multiple foes.

Allow me to make a small suggestion for you:

Mordin;

4 - Incineration Blast

4 - Full Cryo Blast

4 - Salarian Genius/Salarian Savant

0 - Neural Shock

At rank 4, Mordin's Cryo Blast cooldown changes to 4.5 seconds. With the Tech Cooldown upgrade this drops to 3.6 seconds.

Shepard's Overload and Incinerate have a base cooldown of 6 seconds, but with rank 4 in Tech Mastery it drops to 4.8 seconds, then with the Tech Cooldown upgrade it drops further to 3.6 seconds.

This means that you can Overload/Incinerate > Mordin's Cryo Blast, and then you both are off cooldown at about the same time.

Also, Tali is better off with AI Hacking than Energy Drain, as she is not all that useful outside of Synthetic-heavy missions, which is mostly her loyalty mission and Legion's loyalty mission, Overlord if you have not done it yet, plus a few sidequests. Same with Legion, best to ignore or spec out of Geth Shield Boost, as you will not be using him all that often on organic-heavy missions.

Kasumi's Shadow Strike is always better at Rapid Shadow Strike.

Garrus has the best squadmate Overload in the game. You can ignore his AP Ammo.

On my last engineer playthrough, I was pretty much an elemental wizard throwing fire, ice, and electricity at my foes.  I usually used Garrus, Grunt, or Zaeed to be the heavy hitters and soak up damage.  I am not a big fan of concussive shot in Me2 but I use their's quite liberally, they also come with ammo powers so that's a plus.

This is my first time playing as an engineer on ME-2. I am impressed by the combat drone. That thing is really a fourth teammember. But i am a bit disappointed by the the AI hack ability. First you have to take down shields . Then his barrier. And then you can hack the hackible thing. It spoils everything this way, for me anyway. But that is the only complain i have .

The same is true for any crowd-control ability such as Pull, Cryo Blast, Throw, Neural Shock...

But AI Hacking is freaking awesome. And a robot will never have both shields and barrier so I have no idea what you are talking when you say you have to take down his shield then barrier.

. I play on insanity. And the humanoid mechs have barrier and health. The big mechs have shielding and barrier and health. I just did the loyalty mission of Garrus where you encounter two big mechs. They have all that. Or should i have AI hack evolved to rank number 4.? Also my ability to hack is not available when mechs have shielding!

LOKI mechs and Fenris mechs have health and armor.

Geth Troopers, Geth Shock Troopers, Geth Recon Drones (Haestrom only), Geth Hunters, Geth Pyros, and Geth Destroyers have health and shields.

YMIR mechs and Geth Primes are the only robots that have two protection layers, with health, armor, and shields.

The Geth Colossus (Haestrom only) has only armor and shields and cannot be hacked.

Note that Barrier is a human/alien protection layer, found on most Collector units and Asari.

As I wrote previously, most crowd-control abilities work only on health, so AI Hacking only works when the enemy is down to health. This is the same as Pull, Neural Shock, Throw, Cryo Blast, and so on. The only two crowd-control abilities that "work" through protection layers are Flashbang Grenade (stop guns from firing) and Stasis, although Stasis does not really work 'through' protections as it does 'over' protection layers. Inferno Ammo (rank 4 Incendiary Ammo) can cause protected enemies to panic, but only if you set a non-protected enemy on fire within its radius.

Rank 1 AI Hacking is not very good. You need it at least rank 2 to be useful since it gives hacked synthetics shields so they last longer. Rank 3 is better since it lasts longer and has more shields, and rank 4 is freaking awesome; I prefer Improved AI Hacking for the increased duration.

Probably the best thread about AI Hacking is AI Hacking Hilarity by Bozorgmehr.

It is not the biggest problem. I only would have liked AI hacking better if it was possible to hack shielded mechs and geth . It would be awsum to hack shielded reapers like Harbinger.
