By less NPCs they mean the ones in the background who you can't interact with but make the place feel livelier.

For example say in an Inquisition camp, those who play on Xbox One, PS4, or higher end PCs will experience 20 NPCs. Those who play on Xbox 360, PS3, and lower end PCs will experience only 10.

Exactly this, the only NPCs that are leaving are people who have no story or quests or anything.  When I asked if we were losing anything, a dev specifically told me that we would have all the same content as PS4/X1 the cities/camps just wouldn't feel as alive.

They'd be just that - rumours. Anyone can make them.

Did you know that Vivienne is secretly a qunari, and that's why she wears horned hats?

Did you know that DAI will be always online and will ask you to verify your disc code every five hours to prevent piracy

Did you know that if it takes you longer than 30 hours to finish the game, the Big Bad wins because you were too slow in stopping them?

RUMOURS ARE FUN

They have said, officially, TIME and TIME AGAIN, that the only difference is reducing BACKGROUND NPCs (the generics standing around, saying and doing nothing). They will STILL HAVE SOME, only less.

The reason for the new gens isn't to steal your money. It is to provide more power. Previous gen just ISN'T AS POWERFUL. However, rather than removing features and options, Bioware is just making it so the console doesn't have to render as many props. "Cities will be less populous." FFS they're even trying to preserve graphical quality.

IS NOTHING GOOD ENOUGH

This is also true. Hence why i'm hoping last-gen support dies out quickly. So that you have something to cry about. ;)

Yeah, well by then I'll probably have upgraded myself by that point and thus won't need to cry about anything... Mostly. I'll still cry that all the DLC I bought for the PS3 version will probably need re-bought for the PS4 version. So either I need to miss all the DLC until I upgrade or deal with needing to blow a lot of extra money to get the same content twice.

No, they need to make it 10K at 900fps on GameCube!!! Don't they know people still play GC!?!?!

PC does what consoles does way better in every aspect. OP - I reccomend you sell anything you dont need and buy a solid PC for dragon age Inquisition. Do it for yourself. For your wellbeing. Game with pride.

Warning: May cause side-effects like smugness and elitism ;)

For some of us, those are pre-existing conditions.

OP has a gaming PC (or said they did in another one of their troll threads) but refuses to use it for.....reasons? Also, that elitism (while irritating) is well deserved :P look at all the pretty scenery!!

I already expected that the 360 and PS3 versions wouldn't be as high quality as the newer consoles or PC, but I don't mind.

I adore DAO and DA2 despite the shabby graphics, empty locales and repeating dungeons. So long as the story and characters are excellent, I'm happy. Besides, DAI is hardly going to be worse than games I already own for 'last gen' consoles, like Skyrim. So it's all good. The fancy versions can wait until I can afford it.

The Xbox One version at SDCC looked exactly like the PC version.

Don't you mean it the other way around?

Far as I know no one is forcing you to buy new consoles or DAI or play games even.

You decide what version to buy, you decide what console or PC to buy and you decide if you'll buy DAI at all. With your budget you decide what you can afford and when. Games are a luxury and not life necessities. If you don't want to buy new consoles and think DAI on old consoles isn't worth the money, then don't buy it, buy it later when the price drops or wait for a sale. No one is required to adjust their prices to your personal liking.

I would expect PS3/Xbox360 to have:

  • Lesser numbers of background non-plot NPCs
  • Less detailed characters and more static environments
  • Less detailed magic and environmental effects

I would expect identical:

  • Plot
  • Combat mechanics
  • NPC interaction

He also made the claim of playing multiple new games, mainly CRPGs this year. If he has the money for the many games he mentioned I don't see why he doesn't have the money for a new console. It sounds like it is all about priorities. If you prioritize many new games on last gen consoles over buying a new console then you make the choice to get a "lesser" experience.

The last gen consoles have been around for a very long time, an extraordinary long cycle for consoles so gamers who truly can't afford the new consoles should be happy they have been able to get so much out of their (last gen) consoles.

lol at "barren & empty".

Just because there are newer consoles now it doesn't mean the old ones are toasters or something. What, aren't there good looking games in ps3/360? Last time I checked Skyrim had trees, bushes and background NPC's despite being an open world game with a huge map.

You're absolutely right.   Developers should just stop making games for the old outdated platforms and be done with it.   Think of how much development time has been wasted to try and get games to run on these ancient hardware configurations.

Complaining about new games having to be scaled down to even run on 10 year old systems just boggles my mind honestly.

Yes, but even Skyrim had limits on its animation distances.

Waterfalls were particularly noticeable to be static water at a distance until you got close enough to burst into life.

Oblivion used to have grass that ran up hills as you approached them.

Latest generation kit should be able to banish most of the last of the content pop-in issues.

So PS3/Xbox360 will look similar but it will lack the detail and environmental flourishes.

As an example here are non-HD screenshots of DA2 and DAI (in Kirkwall's Hightown and I assume Halamshiral)

I would expect the PS3/Xbox360 version to look better than DA2 but flatter and less immersive than the DAI PS4/XB1/PC version.

Are we really gonna stoop to a console vs the PC "master race" debate?

Of course  we are.  Mocking the peasants is half the fun of not being one!  :P

I'm a PC gamer, and I dislike this as much as the annoyance console fanboys cause. PC isn't all that great guys, it's value for money, sure, but that's all there is to it. It has it's drawbacks. Get your heads out of the ground.

Personally wish they weren't making it for last gen at all, so we could have a better game.

Complaining though bc you want your old hardware to give you everything the new hardware does is silly. I don't think we will see major differences though in dragon age.

Let's talk money OP. I spent 400 bucks upgrading to a PS4 and then I'm buying the game. Since you are playing on a last gen console all you have to do is spend the money for the game. So I think you should get a lesser product, you spent less money for it.

What is up with this nonsense. PC gamers, I'm your biggest proponent on these and many other forums, but some of you are acting like idiots here.

My plan:

Buy PS3 version.

At some point in the future:

Buy a PS4.

Buy DAI again since it'll be like £6.

That's if it's good, though. And I want to replay it.

Alternatively I could rent a PS4 from the phone store under my flat and get the PS4 version.

They get the shaft AND the short end of the stick? That's too much for the filthy console peasants. They should get one or the other. Or maybe one and they have to buy the second as DLC, or only get it by being an XBox gold member.

I hear the Shaft is a timed XBone exclusive.

Still they could make the effort to make the game the same no matter the age being 10 year old consoles or not. The PS3 still runs well & future PS3 games show the PS3 is not dead.

Being upcoming games from Tales of Xillia 2, Tales of Zesteria or Persona 5 which is a PS3 Exclusive & runs on a brand new Engine.

Look, I'm a huge fan of both the Tales series and the Persona series, but just because games are coming out for the PS3 does not mean that the PS3 is capable of the same things the PS4 is. Both Tales and Persona uses heavily stylized visuals reminescent of anime/manga artwork, meaning that the companies behind them actually don't have to use too much actual processing power. It's the same reason why Wind Waker for GC still looks absolutely gorgeous compared to any GC game with more realistic graphics.

The PS4 is stronger than the PS3. This is fact. As such, you will not have an equal gaming experience on multi-gen games. This is also fact. As for your speculation, of course the actual game content is going to be the same. Any NPCs that are stripped out will be NPCs that you would be unable to interact with anyway, simply window dressing on the more powerful machines in order to create a more living, breathing world. You will also have a downgrade in visual quality, where I'd suspect the most noticable hit will be on spell effects, as those things look like they're full of particle effects similar to the latest InFAMOUS.

Demanding that all consoles be treated equally when some consoles are stronger than others is kind of like demanding that the PC version be neutered just because it will obviously be the best looking one (unless Bioware mess up on optimization badly)
