What is it about the way James dresses that reminds people of Call of Duty? I only briefly played one of them, and it was just guys in combat gear.

That's really it from what I've gathered. That and his bulk+haircut.

I don't recall people in Call of Duty being all that bulky. I guess this is always going to escape me a bit, but I suppose I'd have to subject myself to Call of Duty more to truly understand.

A lot of people see Vega as an attempt to appeal to the 'Frat-boy, bro, unsophisticated, blue-collar guy' who tend to play CoD.

Of course, I personally think that despite Vega's supposed creation, he actually had a lot more depth and character than people really give him. He's a naive kid, but he's willing to learn, and he's not annoying or arrogant or truly idiotic.

On a side-note, I'm really glad CoD seems to be running out of steam. It was inevitable: they seriously over-inundated the market with the same game year after year. MW3 was the last one I bought. The Treyarch games are alright, seeing as they at least attempt to have an enjoyable story, but the craze seems to be dying. Hopefully it stays that way. And in a twist of irony, Battlefield failed as well, what with the horrible, buggy, unfinished train-wreck known as BF4. Which kind of sucks, since BF was a lot more enjoyable than CoD was. But on the bright side, I'm going to break my no-SW rule and get Battlefront, simply because it's a Star Wars Battlefront game by DICE, so I don't have to worry about any more Battlefields, until they finally decide to make Bad Company 3. And of course, Halo is still going, though I think the steam left them when Bungie left the franchise. Halo's holding on for the reason that it has a decent Expanded Universe, and because it's essentially Microsoft Royalty. Everyone's more excited for not-Halo/suspiciously-similar-to-Mass-Effect-FPS Destiny from what I've seen. I personally haven't worked up enthusiasm for many games, and my FPS tastes have virtually disappeared completely: I haven't played an FPS since BF3 got taken off the servers.

I guess I didn't really give much thought to his appearance when I first encountered him in ME3. For the most part, he seemed unoffensive and I was indifferent, but after listening to his convos with Cortez and his more in-depth dialogue, he certainly became one of my favorites of the series.

As for Destiny, I think it's a good game and I preordered after getting addicted to a weekend with the beta, and this is from someone who normally steered clear from FPS games.

I tried it and honestly thought that you could put a Halo sticker on the game and you wouldn't be able to tell the difference.

It's not bad, per se, but I don't think it's particularly creative or original. I mean, if this is what Bungie wanted to do, they should have just stuck with Halo. I can understand why they left Halo to Microsoft and 343, seeing as they wanted independence from the former and the ability to do their own game with external, third-party support/collaboration, but they're essentially ripping off their own franchise. It has a very Bungie feel, which is good, but it also has a very Halo feel, which isn't good.

I'm the opposite: I used to play a fair number of shooters, but I'm moving away from them and more towards action-adventure games, while also focusing more on RPG's. Granted, my gaming has been down a lot in recent months, being preoccupied with other fandoms and interests that aren't in the realm of Video Games: namely, I have a slightly rediscovered passion for some anime Attack on Titan, and I've finally gotten around to watching Evangelion and Gundam series from the 90's; these go hand in hand with my nigh-obsession with Pacific Rim. Plus with several of my fandoms dormant or dead, like Star Wars under Disney, I've needed other things to fall in love with. I re-read ASOIAF over the span of a couple of weeks and caught up with GoT finally, being two seasons behind the curve, and I also re-read the Silmarillion. Doctor Who is finally coming back in two weeks as well, and with Peter Capaldi as the 12th Doctor, so I'm uber-excited. Plus, I'm getting ready for a 3 month road/camping trip out-west with a girl and a few of her friends I met a couple weeks ago. It's going to be tight.

As one who will likely never own a copy of Halo on account of not owning any XBox system, I can't really say whether or not that's good or bad, but I like it so far.

Surprised not to see any love for Mordin Solus as a 'bromance'; I thought his was easily the most interesting friendship throughline in the game, even if Mordin and Shepard did have their occasional misunderstandings with each other. :)

because Mordin just assumes you're into him if you have no LI in ME2.

Arrogant bastard :P

I was in the Army for many years. I suppose that's part of the reason James pissed me off. I was like, "You are at HQ and you are out of uniform, solider!"

But as I said, James grew on me. And he's fun to take along on missions. I usually use him in the beginning and endgame with Kaiden. But James isn't a "bro. He's sort of my Shepard's apprentice.

Why does someone who doesn't do the bro thing have to be a goddamn stick-in-the-mud?

Are people confusing bros with dudebros? Those are two very different things.

A bro in the general sense is just a really good friend. Who in their right mind wouldn't want to have good friends?

Or they're just tired of the lame frat-boy approach to relationships portrayed in the series and want something more mature and realistic.

I don't think you've been playing the right series, because there is no such thing as a frat-boy approach to the relationships in Mass Effect.

So I just completely imagined the obnoxious drinking and toilet humor of many of the ME3 moments and the Citadel DLC? Joker acts like a frat boy. James acts like a frat boy. Garrus is treated as a frat boy. Tali gets drunk like a frat boy.

What were you lying?

If drinking is what makes someone a frat boy, then most of humanity are frat boys. I don't drink myself, because I find it completely insane to willingly drink poison, but I don't go around and judge and berate people (real or fictional) for it. If I did I would be judging and berating people 24/7, seven days a week, 365 days a year, and I have much better things to do. Like arguing on the internet.

Besides that, I saw nothing to suggest any characters were behaving or being treated in a typical frat boy fashion, and I have friends who do behave in a typical frat boy fashion, so I do know how typical frat boy behaviour expresses itself. I can't recall any toilet humor either. So yeah, I do believe that's your imagination having a field day. Feel free to enlighten me what you consider to be obnoxious frat boy behaviour and toilet humor, though.

Depends, is your lack of good friends because of a conscious choice or because you just haven't met people you can get that close to? It is the aversion to close friendship that is a problem, not its absence.

I think you're intentionally skewing my argument at this point. I'm not arguing against people drinking (or ever indicated as such). I said I wasn't impressed by the moments in the game dependent on alcoholic humor that goes in hand with the frat mentality.

Look at most of the humor that goes on in the Citadel DLC. There's a lot of drunk humor and light-heartedness that gets obnoxious. And an argument to ignorance on your part does not mean that my imagination is 'having a field day'.

Speaking of frat life, I'm sure Allers was a Tri-Delt. And I'm sure TIM spent a few nights passed out on the quad.

My Shepard was an independent. He didn't need to pay people to be his friends.

But you're the one who made Garrus so badass, Sheps influence in ME:1 is what shaped him in a way, conversations on the right way to do things etc. If it wasn't for Shepard Garrus would just be any other C-Sec cop that likes to bend the rules a bit

That is a pretty good point to put into consideration, and when I look at Shepard that way (which I honestly just forget at times, as I continuously consider myself more of an equal than an idle to my squad mates), it kind of makes me feel like a legendary badass. Either way, Garrus becomes more of a badass than he was in Mass Effect 1 (although he was still pretty damn good), whether or not my Shepard had a positive, negative, or no influence on him at all. As far as I'm concerned, it's possible to play through the entirety of Mass Effect 1 without even recruiting Garrus, and still he moves to Omega as an over powered vigilante.

Garrus, the one true god of the Mass Effect universe.  B)

It was an off-color joke in honor of Robin Williams.

Now to the serious answer, yes, I would consider your aversion to befriending fellow human beings a problem. Especially for a pro-human... though the clear sociopathic tendencies serve as an acceptable explanation.

If its a joke, why post that comment??

You really have a problem with a person or persons who don't have any close friends. I mean you refer to them as a stick-in-the-mud without knowing the reason why. So you have to come up with your own assumptions based on nothing.

You walked right into it.

You really have a problem with a person or persons who don't have any close friends.

We're not discussing people who don't have close friends, we're discussing people who choose to not have close friends, who takes offense to the prospect of having "bros". Like you and the Doctor.

In the interest of science, I would like to know why you choose to contain your share of close friendship to family members.

Likewise, if the Doctor is willing to elaborate, I would like to know why he "doesn't do bros".

mean you refer to them as a stick-in-the-mud without knowing the reason why. So you have to come up with your own assumptions based on nothing.

I refer to the Doctor as a stick-in-the-mud because from what I've read, he comes across like a joyless, contrarian, moral edgemaster the likes of which I have grown incredibly tired of seeing parade around the internet. An exceedingly large share of them have been Cerberus supporters, because the racist and moral relativist beliefs of Cerberus in contrast to the cleanlier and friendlier Aliance resonates well with their inner contrarianism and hatred for deeply rooted social norms imposed on our species by evolution over the last 200,000 years. This is exacerbated by the fact that Cerberus isn't well-written enough for anyone with half a mind to take it seriously - yet people do. This indelicately implies a deficiency in sound judgement and logic.

It's Arcian condemning things he doesn't understand again. Because being different is bad!

I don't mind difference. It's contrarianism which grinds my gears. Some motherf***ers always trying to paddle upstreams.
