Good news: I could get the whip in game!

901-1-1407674008.jpg

Don't look at the angles, it's just a very quick skinning on the flail skeleton.

The bad news is that at this time, the whip is an override of the flail.  :(

Next steps: make a nicer skinning, and of course have the whip use its own animations (hoping the sling and flail combat stances are not hard-coded.)

How is there even a flail animation? My flails always look like maces in game

Flails look like maces in the toolset, but they should be fully animated in the game.

How did you do it?  I tried to override the flail this way several times and never got it to work.

So much effort for a weapon that does 1d2 base damage... :)

A custom OnHit property that attempts a disarm would seem to be in order, much like a flindbar (which could also do with some animating!)

Whip is kind of ridiculous, period. Its for herding animals or torture (or bachelor parties) and would do 1d0 to anyone wearing even leather armor.

You can say much the same about shuriken (except perhaps for the animal herding bit). Although an enchanted whip that does x amount of elemental damage would still be useful (depending on how high the 'x' is).

I have a long scar along my jawline courtesy of using a whip as a teenager. It certainly wasn't life threatening, but it sure got my attention at the time.

you could fasten a barb at the tip - so as to make it a "6 foot hobbit flail of flesh wounds"

"It's only a flesh wound!"

I recall a friend telling me of a Paladin in his PnP group using an enchanted whip that had glass shards or something imbedded in it. I would think it was a bit more painful than that. ^_^

Yes, when I am covered head to toe in 100lbs of plate armor I'm scared of a little broken glass. That's what keeps medieval warriors up at night.

Actually, the Huns used whips sometimes as light cavalry. Mostly to take people out of their saddle, but sometimes to whack them with the little brass balls (no, I'm not making this up) on the end of the whip.  Having used a whip, I really wouldn't want that slapping MY horse in the head, or me. Results would be... bad.

But this was an enchanted weapon, capable of piercing such armor!

Giving the normal whip a Knockdown ability on a hit would partly simulate an entanglement effect and make it a more effective support weapon. Having that used against the party could make combat more interesting.

But isn't it preposterous that only a whip could knock down.. Any weapon could do that. But they don't get special powers to do so. I think it's just too much of a stretch. Even a naked slave can be whipped for hours and not die. Great ambient item, not useful as a weapon in a life and death battle

The trip attack is one of its special abilities under D&D v3.5. Here's the SRD entry:

A whip deals nonlethal damage. It deals no damage to any creature with an armor bonus of +1 or higher or a natural armor bonus of +3 or higher. The whip is treated as a melee weapon with 15-foot reach, though you don’t threaten the area into which you can make an attack. In addition, unlike most other weapons with reach, you can use it against foes anywhere within your reach (including adjacent foes).

Using a whip provokes an attack of opportunity, just as if you had used a ranged weapon.

You can make trip attacks with a whip. If you are tripped during your own trip attempt, you can drop the whip to avoid being tripped.

When using a whip, you get a +2 bonus on opposed attack rolls made to disarm an opponent (including the roll to keep from being disarmed if the attack fails).

You can use the Weapon Finesse feat to apply your Dexterity modifier instead of your Strength modifier to attack rolls with a whip sized for you, even though it isn’t a light weapon for you.

A Knockdown would be a simplification of that, but I suppose you could make it a triggerable power instead.

Besides.... we know the players.  They want whips that do sonic and lightning and frost damage.

Because that looks awesome.

REAL whips do sonic damage, if you crack them close enough to someone's ear!

I can see whips mostly being used for NPC flavour. Slavemasters could use them to 'encourage' slaves to work harder. The PC might get flogged aboard ship for insubordinance. Mounted animal herders could use them to round up cattle. Leather-clad female antagonists could make using a whip their defining character point (especially worshipers of Loviatar).

I actually have an honours degree in archaeology, and worked as an archaeologist for about ten years. I never once took a whip with me during field work (or a pistol for that matter). :P

There WAS a life-sized cardboard cutout of Indiana Jones in the hallway of the archaeology department where I studied though (as a joke, given how far removed from real-life archaeology Indie's exploits were).
