I think 12 is about the max I'd want. ME2 had a great cast, but there weren't enough missions/assignments to let me do every squad combination in a single playthrough, plus they were pretty much silent in most missions.

Should they do another 12 squadmate cast again, I want there to be more dialogue during missions (this mainly goes for assignments) and just more sidequests in general so I can try every possible squadmate combination in a single playthrough

they should have a 4 man squad now and have a large number of possible squadmates and the requirement to select who stays and goes with a 10 man limit

I agree, Mass Effect 2 clearly demonstrated the severe limitations attached to a large cast of squadmembers. Though I would prefer if they'd reworked the squadmate mechanic entirely.

Let's be honest: Companion Cube is all we need.

I think they had a pretty good mix in ME1 and 2.

There can't be too many companions, especially in Bioware games.

Personally I enjoy the larger crews, as it makes you feel like more of an unstoppable force, more content to experience, and more friendships or romances to pursue. The only issue may be with a larger crew is that you will receive less time to properly connect with them, and it'll often be required to replay the game a good two or three times to have them truly grow on you, as was slightly the same for me with a lot of characters from both Mass Effect 2 and 3. One exception may be James Vega, as watching Paragon Lost had him grow on me.

Anyway, to me, I can cope with a few playthroughs to have the characters grow on me, that really doesn't bother me. Larger squads is more variety for the missions and, well, just about everything in general, and Mass Effect 2's squad was my favourite because of it.

Since ME4 is meant to have a lot more developement time, than previous games - I guess they could make a big crew and give depth to every individual.

But it's too early to guess - we don't even know a single character from the new game, let alone the new crew, so we can speculate on personalities of these people.

I hope we multi-race crew.

The more squadmates, the better.

When a developer says they want to make deeper characters so they make fewer of them, is just another way of saying, we're too lazy to actually create a lot of characters. In the end, the few are no more dynamic, personal or deeper than when they make an abundant amount of them.

Thus, throwing the whole "quality over quantity" thing out the window, anyway.

Mass Effect 3 had a much smaller party and BioWare was able to have much more interaction between companions as well as commentary in response to events in the game.

ME2 actually worked really well with its extensive cast but then the vast majority of the plot was actually dedicated to the companions, and without that amount of content I doubt it would have worked. It was a great pity to me that most of the ME2 companions only had minor roles in ME3, in general I think it was the best cast of the series. The depth of characters is more important than the number of them, but at the same time not everyone will like every character so you don't want to go too small or some people might not enjoy the game at all. 6 + potential dlc characters is fine by me.

Honestly, I'm okay with different companions as long as they are distinct, and I can decide if I like them or not. I didn't really have a problem with one character seeming too much like another, or was too faceless (aside from Jacob and Liara)

I wouldn't exactly say it was much more, by any means. If people accept it as such, I guess to each his own.

Are you for real?

In ME3 the crew walks around the Normandy and talks to each other. There's always someone who has something to say about the last mission you did (and not necessarily to you, could also be someone else on the ship), no matter how trivial the mission (exception being the N7 missions, I think, not sure).

Oppose that to ME2 where everybody's in the same place all game long, where nobody reacts to the mission that was just completed, unless it was their own loyalty mission, (with the exception of James and sometimes Miranda, who do debriefing) and the only 'talking' they do to each other is trying to kill each other.

In ME2 they're basically just waiting for you to come by, in ME3 they're 'alive'.

My personal feel about the composition of the new "foreground" team of the new protagonist:

- 4 to 6 humans (2 females)

- 2 to 3 turians (1 female)

- 2 salarians

- 2 asari

- either 1 hanar or 1 volus/elcor

- 1 to 2 members of a new spieces who tag along durning the course of the game.

This is just my feel, but I believe this ammount would allow BioWare to give unique personality and background to every person from the team.

Of course, I'm not counting the secondary and tertiary NPCs who are just there in the background managing the whole ship.

Ok... you got me. Less is more. Lets just have 4 members and enjoy the same drab characters and settle for one playthrough.

If you accept an extra line of dialog to compensate for a smaller crew, then... yes. To each their own. I don't look at that way.

... sorry.

Completely unrelated to what I said. I never spoke about crew size nor replayability.

I was replying to something you said, which was a reply to this:

Read what he\she says.

There is no interaction between squadmates in ME2, aside from Miranda and Jack wanting to kill each other and Legion and Tali wanting to kill each other.
There is no commentary in response to in game events in ME2, unless you happened to just finish up a person's loyalty mission.

But that is exactly the premise of the discussion. I see nothing to support enough reason to accept a small crew selection.

I see no reason to promote a large crew selection.

Unless you want to spend an entire game fixing daddy issues, again.

Less is sometimes more.

I'd rather have eight squadmates with lots of interaction and dialogue with both the protagonist and other squadmates, than twelve who don't have much to say to either the protagonist or other crew members.
