The problem with a small number of companions is that you might not like any of them. You can't expect the game to design them around just who you would like so there needs to be, at the very least, a larger pool, and considering that Jacob seems to be the only one that no-one really cared about I'd say you need about the number ME2 had. But perhaps you don't need to take them all with you.

If you don't like talking to your companions, don't talk to them. Outside of that I have no idea why anyone would play through part 1 or care about part 2 if they didn't like talking to their companions, maybe ditch the need to use an elevator though.

I want diverse character cast, not be filled with white Anglo humans.

This would solve lot's of issues too, by having small but diverse cast with lot's of dialogue and interactions with other characters.

I second the OP. It takes way too much time to go through the dialogs with all of your companions after the missions. ME3 was the worst regarding conversations IMO. Especially if you wanted to romance Miranda without having the Citadel DLC. Despite the fact that they were lovers, the whole thing felt like 2 uninterested strangers having small talk. Anyway, I hope next time BioWare will focus on just a handful of well written characters.

My personal feel about the composition of the new "foreground" team of the new protagonist:

- 4 to 6 humans (2 females)
- 2 to 3 turians (1 female)
- 2 salarians
- 2 asari
- either 1 hanar or 1 volus/elcor
- 1 to 2 members of a new spieces who tag along durning the course of the game.

This is just my feel, but I believe this ammount would allow BioWare to give unique personality and background to every person from the team.

Of course, I'm not counting the secondary and tertiary NPCs who are just there in the background managing the whole ship.

Way too many humans and council species. One member per alien race is by far enough, Hanar, Volus and Elcor would be very difficult as those three are barely anything but joke species implemented for comic relief. Imo the squad should at least have a Quarian, Batarian and Krogan squadmate.

I don't talk to squadmates unless I want to activate their personal quests, so interaction and dialogue isn't a requirement for me. I liked Mass Effect 2's size far more than the others.

The best thing about ME2 was the number of characters, having a larger crew meant you had options. For instance a lot of people liked Miranda even more people liked Tali, I much preferred Jack, others Samara. The same can be said of Garrus, Grunt, Thane and Legion, if ME2 hadn't had jack hadn't had legion hadn't had Grunt, Thane or Samara, could you honestly say it would have been something everyone could enjoy? Or would it have been the same old same two sexy female characters 1 a born rich brat, the other a hard knock geek, a token black character, a spikey haired bro-dude and a funny mad scientist with a weird haircut. Oh and Joker...

But it's true in ME2 they don't talk that much... I wish they had more things to say, after each missions like in ME3.

Sure, but we at least got that improvement in ME3 (and very welcome it was too).

With few companions you'll be stuck with ones you hate

I would like the companions to me more 3d, instead of them just stand in one corner wait for you to talk to them. how about them running off and doing something else, and them getting injured or them running off with the bounty loot and you have to track them down...just anything.

I think the number of companions and size of the ship is a matter of taste, I personally like the more intimate setting smaller group smaller ship like the millenium falcon. some people want 200 companions like star trek. Or we could have a really big ship with a small crew like Ullyses 31.

I think the "Companions going and doing other things" was done reasonably well in ME3. You'd occasionally find squad mates in different areas of the ship (Eg. James and Vega having their "Who is more badass" discussion in the mess hall) or being able to converse with some of your squad mates on the Citadel, eg. Vega while he's playing poker, or EDI and Joker at the nightclub.

I would've loved to have seen the James and Vega discussion about who's more bad ass. Cause James and Vega are the same one :D

Don't want just 4-5 companions, as others have no doubt said this would lack variety to cater to different tastes and leave people facing a roster they dislike. In ME3 the only companions i found tolerable were Javik and Garrus, so i was hardly enamoured of the reduced party. I personally like the route DAI sounds to be going on, no DLC companions but 9 companions.

I think 12 is about the max I'd want. ME2 had a great cast, but there weren't enough missions/assignments to let me do every squad combination in a single playthrough, plus they were pretty much silent in most missions.

Should they do another 12 squadmate cast again, I want there to be more dialogue during missions (this mainly goes for assignments) and just more sidequests in general so I can try every possible squadmate combination in a single playthrough

Its a given with ME3s increased banter between squadmates on and off missions. We should have a smaller cast at first though. 12 should be reserved for when the villain(s) become a galactic threat. When thinking back its how ME3 should be in regards to the other 2.

As far as the lack of time spent with squaddies in ME2, thats more of a problem due to how late many of them are picked up and the small number of plot missions.

ME2 has 12 companions which I felt was too many. If I only need 8 to complete the game with everyone alive, what reason would I need to recruit 12. If there were 12 squadmates on the ship in ME3, it would take more time talking with each one after every mission than doing the mission. That would cause me to skip  the dialogue no matter if I like them or not. I only mention this since ME3 had a lot more dialogue between characters on the ship than in ME2. I would be happy with 8 squadmates for the next game

8 or 9 seems to be about the perfect number. You get enough that there is plenty of variety without so many that they are busy with calibrations after two conversations.

I dont mind 12 so long as its built up to make sense for so many and they are all unique. Though I agree its not needed and 8 or 9 is a oerfect number for maximum. Planetary or system wide threat, six. Galactic threat, all hands on deck.

Some of the complaints here about ME2 are ridiculous.

OP says there are too many squad mates and it was a chore talking to them all. Yet others are complaining that they didn't say/do enough. Lol.

And daddy issues? Maybe you should be looking at ME1 again. Wrex? Daddy issues. Garrus? Daddy issues. Tali? Daddy issues. Liara? Mommy issues. Ash? Granddaddy issues. Literally the only squad mate that doesn't have family issues of some kind is Kaidan. In ME2 there are still daddy/family issues, sure, but at least you have Mordin, Garrus, Legion and Jack who have burdens of another kind (plus DLC characters if you want).

The one that takes the cake tho is 'too many humans'. What?!? There are only 3 human squad mates in the vanilla game and two of them are with you at Cerberus at the start. Then you get a Salarian, a Krogan, a Turian, a Quarian, a Drell, a choice of two Asari and a freakin' Geth platform. Talk about variety.

The only thing I would do is limit the number of squad mates you can have on your ship at any one time to 6-8 - if you want others, you have to boot some. Beyond that the more options, the better. Adds far more replayability.

Too many human LIs. Kaidan, Ashley, Miranda, Jacob, Jack.... And then, add human teammate Kasumi, Zaeed and James. Yes, there's too many

humans.

I'd like a lot of characters squad, but if they can't work them well enough. Give them enough talks and comments, it's useless. Then, finaly I'd prefer quality than quantity.

I disagree with the OP, I play Bioware games for the companions, I want to talk to them and learn more about them. They are fine. This is my opinion.

Companion chat is optional, not forced to talk to anyone. Could play the whole game without talking to them on the ship or camp (DAO) less its part of the Main Plot.

Yeah but in ME1 and 2 ou talked to them 3 times and they're done.... It's pretty sad. The worst was Kaidan/Ashley if you can't romance them in ME1.... x_x

I wish more content, more talk ...

Not in the context of Shepard's situation. Youre a human, in a human military, on a human ship. Of course there will be more humans around you than other species. You could easily run the argument that, in the circumstances, there is a disproportionately large number of alien squad mates through the trilogy (although I'm glad that there is).

As for LIs - same thing. Why wouldn't the LIs be mainly humans? A romantic relationship with an alien should be a rarity because (Asari aside) there is no real likelihood of physical attraction between species. Granted, that's not everything, but it certainly makes human-human relationships far more likely.

One sensible way to have a more even mix of different species is to have multiple playable species, since each species would have to be catered for.
