@LPPrince I used the exploit in DA2 and had 2 lvl 50 characters. It was glorious! I wish they had never patched that one.

(Skyrim also had the XP exploit patched out, while leaving all the other bugs in the game. Fun!)

I think DAI will have some grind parts though. The devs did mention factions could take certain regions over as the game progressed and they made it sound like this feature never ends. If that's true then lower level caps make less sense to me. I will put a frown on my face if I hit the level cap 30% through the game.

There was a lvl cap in either one of the previous games?  I never knew that

Yeah, there were caps in DA games, same as in the Mass Effect games (ME1 was 60, ME2 was 30, ME3 was 60 again). I don't think I ever hit the cap in DAO, can't remember (not sure what it was), but I maxed DA2 through exploit as I mentioned in my previous post. It was awesome having all the powers at my disposal.  I think that sort of thing is fun on the 4th or 5th playthrough.

Origins' level cap is 35. By the time I got to Witch Hunt, the Warden was pretty much a god among rogues.

And clowns as we know them (see the picture provided above) have not.

Bread, as we know it, didn't exist until the 1920s. If I say I plan to eat bread in Thedas, I doubt you'd be confused.

Ahh yes, I took advantage of the level exploit in Skyrim to reach Level 81. Enough people did it that Bethesda added The Ebony Warrior in a DLC so that max-level characters had a boss worthy of them to face.

THAT is what Bioware should do. Leave the exploits in, then give us something to contend with if we get there.

I loved the Ebony Warrior! But why did Beth have to patch out the exploit? I only got 1 character maxed before it was gone. :(

I only ever played my one character with over 450 hours put into him, so I have had a grand success. :)

I'd probably be confused if you said you were planning on making a sandwich with some Wonder Bread.

This is a derail though, so I'll end it here.

I hope the effects on the ecosystem aren't too devastating, because I plan to kill everything that moves.  DA and DA2 were kind of frustrating with limited exp opportunities, so hopefully we'll have enough respawn to reach the level cap if we really want to.  I'm looking forward to this because it should make the exp from locked chests (and maybe even side quests) a lot less important...

But why would they be in Dragon Age?

Strong blood magic done by the Tevinter Imperium. Gotta watch out for clowns, especially those with the beserker specialization.

I can't believe Gollum managed to frame Samwise by blaming him for eating something that doesn't even exist. Smeagol's a clever sombitch.

No developer should leave any exploits in. Get good or put the time in. This works from the other angle too though, developers should make content that's fun and compelling to play fair. Bethesda failed at this with the leveling system in Skyrim... Very unintuitive to max level in that game, especially if you're RP'ing someone who doesn't do melee, magic or stealth, you still need to max those skills to unlock content. (Legendary Skills patch helped a bit)

Of course, there will always be exploits so complaining about them is a lost cause.

Meh, leaving an exploit In isn't that bad. Only the people who want it will use it, and everyone else will just continue on.

I like exploits on subsequent playthroughs (if I hear of any that aren't cheating or annoying to get). I only have 1 exploited Skyrim character. The other is level 78, I think, through nothing but playing and grindy goodness. In DA2 I only used the exploit on my 4th and 5th characters (I have about 10).

If I only ever played 1 character, I would never touch exploits. It's hard for me to imagine only playing a single character through an RPG though, especially if the story and gameplay are halfway decent.

I always found this to be an incredibly flimsy argument trying to justify poor design.

There's two kinds of exploits, intrusive and unobtrusive.

Intrusive exploits are exploits that the player must take an active role in avoiding. For example: The entire Arcane Warrior class in Dragon Age: Origins, or Everything Smithing in Skyrim. These are toxic to the game because in working around the poor design and/or balance, one must forgo natural play taking them out of the experience. Terrain or pathfinding abuse falls into this category as well, and it's not uncommon for First Order Optimal Strategies and Intrusive exploits to be used as interchangeable terms.

Unobtrusive exploits are things like the Alchemy loop in Skyrim, and the Unlimited XP loop in Mass Effect. (Persuade exploit on Noveria) These require the player to take an active role in utilizing them, and can be avoided through normal play.

Now obviously I take much less issue with unobtrusive exploits, but I still don't think the whole "Live and Let Live" approach to exploits is valid. At the end of the day, these are holes and/or bugs in design causing unintentional effects, though I'm mostly concerned with the intrusive exploits.

Why would anyone want that first kind? And also, didn't smithing Only level to 100 regardless before that patch?

Smithing only levels to 100, but with perks you double the effective skill to 200. With (stock) potions you can bump that up to 300, and with gear I think the maximum (stock) effective level is 450~

I had a larger tangent written, but I don't want to derail the thread.

Clowns?

I liked the circus performers in DAO.

Sten and Oghren in clown pants.

Im torn on this personally. Because I usually roleplay powerhungry mages of lawful evil alignment. So staying true to character would mean killing and slaughtering everything to gain as much power as possible before moving on.

However if I were to play on nightmare for the challenge, being overleveled would make the game easier. And that would ruin the whole point of playing nightmare. What would be perfect imo would be if you were at points forced to grind some levels to manage to get through an encounter due to it being inhumanly hard.

Bottomline: I tend to refrain from exp-grinding, because with that mentality you might aswell play normal or even easy and not grind - because the result tend to be the same - grinding reduces difficulty to the point that it counteract one of the core pillars in my gaming philosophy - combat being a challenge.

I think overlevelling would be the only way I could achieve a nightmare playthrough.

I hope the game has a developer console that we're able to enable or is moddable enough so that if I consider that my game would be enhanced by more XP, I can just cheat it to my character, rather than messing around with grinding or exploits.

(The previous DA games benefited from a moderate level bump to start, but they had level scaling so it didn't especially make the game easier, it just meant you had a few more talents to play with.  DA:I may be different)
