I think I only truly showed signs of sadism was on GTA 4 and 5. Due to the physics engine, simply bumping another player with a car caused them to flop about like a fish before getting back up, only for me to prod them again.

I was laughing like a maniac, gloating and taunting my new ragdolls. I ended up having a clan hunt me down and do it to me.

Which is why I am opposed to prescribing psychiatric medication (definitely not to children) unless it's for something that is purely biochemical (bipolar disorder comes to mind). There are various other reasons why a child may feel anxious/depressed which either revolves around the child's family situation/school situation. Should he have been placed on a tricyclic?

Probably not. Unfortunately, since mental health has such a stigma in Western countries people would rather take a drug (with numerous side effects - not to mention the problems that may arise in children). Which is more of a problem with society itself, a belief that psychiatrists (medical doctors that don't receive ANY psychological training until residency whose main job is to prescribe medication) are the best people to see, and a dependence on (unethical) pharmaceutical companies, but that's a discussion best left for another thread.

Well, it is easier to provide pharmacological therapy when psychiatric conditions have neurobiochemical components to them, and patients do get some form of symptom control. But, in general, psychiatric medications suck. Even among psychiatric conditions that are totally organic, like schizophrenia or various neurocognitive disorders, patients are being treated for poorly understood conditions, hoping that one drug will work and still we don't understand how those drugs work. In the meantime, some schizophrenic patients like those on first generation anti-psychotics have to give them even more drugs just to keep their eyes from rolling into their sockets, literally. I feel bad for people on any psych med, let alone having a psychiatric condition.

Not to mention the new drugs also destroy your kidneys.

A lot of drugs in the market for quite some time can destroy your kidneys. Blood pressure meds and some antibiotics can cause kidney injury. There's a weird association with ringing in your ears and potential kidney disease.

All meds suck.

Some people (like me) see games as a chance to role-play, to be something you could never do in real life. I like to take it seriously as it is far more immersive if you do so. (For instance, I liked to drive safely in a game like LA Noire whereas my brother preferred to run down hundreds of people on the sidewalk.)

A lot of it is down to the fact that when most people play a game, they just want to have fun, they don't want to be patient, they don't have the time. We all know that its not real and that our actions in a game don't hurt anyone, so most people don't care or aren't patient enough to be 'civilised' and normal. Instead its just a chance to mess around and have fun. But like I said, I personally prefer to have a slightly more serious gaming experience. Whereas my brother just wants to mess about, run people over and watch the funny ragdoll physics. But either way is fine, gaming is after all, a personalised entertainment experience, as opposed to a movie or TV show.
